Construction and delivery
Ordering and design phase
In December 2007, Carnival Corporation & plc, the parent company of AIDA Cruises, placed an order with Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, for two new cruise ships as part of the ongoing expansion of AIDA's fleet; the second vessel in this order would later be named AIDAmar and delivered in 2012.[6][1] This commissioning followed earlier orders for similar vessels, positioning AIDAmar as the sixth ship in the Sphinx series, succeeding AIDAdiva (2007), AIDAbella (2008), AIDAluna (2009), AIDAblu (2010), and AIDAsol (2011).[1] The design incorporated modifications from its predecessors, classifying it within the Icarus subclass while retaining core Sphinx series elements such as a focus on vibrant, resort-style cruising for a predominantly German-speaking audience.[2]The design phase emphasized environmental considerations and passenger-centric innovations to align with AIDA's evolving brand strategy. Key features included planning for a diesel-electric propulsion system to reduce emissions in operational load ranges, supporting lower environmental impact compared to traditional diesel setups.[1] Passenger-focused layouts highlighted expanded wellness facilities, with a 2,600 m² spa area designed for relaxation using natural materials, and the introduction of an onboard brewery producing AIDA-specific beers to enhance the casual, experiential atmosphere. The estimated construction cost for AIDAmar was approximately USD 420 million, reflecting investments in these sustainable and amenity-driven elements.[3]This order played a pivotal role in AIDA Cruises' fleet strategy, aimed at boosting overall capacity to meet rising demand in Northern European and Mediterranean markets, where the brand sought to capture a larger share of the growing European cruise sector through increased sailings and diversified itineraries.[6] By adding vessels like AIDAmar, AIDA aimed to support seasonal deployments in these regions, enhancing accessibility for short-haul and regional voyages while maintaining a competitive edge in the premium-casual segment.[1]
Building and launch
The keel of AIDAmar was laid on 20 October 2008 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, marking the start of physical construction for the vessel.[7][8]AIDAmar was constructed using modular assembly techniques characteristic of Meyer Werft's shipbuilding process, where large prefabricated sections are built in parallel and integrated into the hullstructure.[9] This approach facilitated the incorporation of the Sphinx-class hull form, adapted from earlier AIDA vessels to enhance stability and efficiency.[2]Meyer Werft, renowned for its expertise in constructing eco-friendly cruise ships, incorporated features such as flow-optimized propellers, low-friction underwater coatings, and systems for reusing waste heat to minimize energy consumption during AIDAmar's build.[2][10]The float-out ceremony occurred on 1 April 2012, when the partially completed ship was moved from the covered construction dock to an outfitting berth for final assembly.[7][11]Construction concluded with sea trials finalized on 3 May 2012, encompassing initial engine tests and performance evaluations in the North Sea.[7] The ship was officially delivered to AIDA Cruises on the same day in Emden, Germany, completing the build process that began following the vessel's order in late 2007.[8][12][13]

Operational history
Maiden voyage and early service
The AIDAmar was christened on 12 May 2012 in Hamburg, Germany, during the 823rd anniversary celebrations of the Port of Hamburg, with Sissi Kuhlmann serving as godmother. The ceremony featured a spectacular light and music show, accompanied by the ship's three sister vessels—AIDAsol, AIDAblu, and AIDAluna—and drew an estimated 1.4 million spectators to the event.[28]The ship's maiden voyage departed from Hamburg in June 2012 on a 14-day itinerary to the Norwegian Fjords.[1]From 2012 to 2014, AIDAmar focused its deployments on Northern European routes, such as the Baltic Sea and Norwegian fjords, as well as the Western Mediterranean, with homeports alternating between Hamburg, Germany, and Palma de Mallorca, Spain.[3] Initial passenger feedback highlighted high satisfaction with innovative onboard facilities, including the ship's brewery, which contributed to strong overall ratings in the debut season.[29] Since delivery, AIDAmar has been operated by AIDA Cruises, a subsidiary of Costa Crociere S.p.A. within the Carnival Corporation & plc group.
Itineraries and deployments
In the mid-2010s, AIDAmar expanded its operations to include destinations in the Canary Islands and the Eastern Mediterranean, offering 7- to 14-night cruises primarily departing from Palma de Mallorca in Spain. These voyages typically featured stops at ports such as Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura and Arrecife in Lanzarote for the Canary Islands, alongside Mediterranean routes visiting Barcelona, Valencia, and various Greek and Turkish ports to cater to growing demand for warm-weather escapes from northern European markets.[3][30]From 2018 to 2019, AIDAmar shifted to seasonal deployments, focusing on summer itineraries in the Baltic Sea and Norwegian fjords with 7- to 12-night roundtrips from Warnemünde, Germany, including calls at Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden; and fjord ports like Stavanger and Oslo, Norway. Winter seasons during this period remained centered on the Canary Islands and Western Mediterranean, with rare forays into Caribbean charters for AIDA Cruises, though AIDAmar primarily supported European routes rather than transatlantic operations.[31][30][32]Following the COVID-19 pandemic, AIDAmar restarted operations in July 2021 with strict health protocols, including mandatory vaccinations and testing, commencing 7-night cruises from Hamburg, Germany, to Scandinavian and Baltic destinations. By 2025, the ship's focus has returned to 7- to 28-night voyages in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, such as roundtrips from Hamburg to Norway's fjords and a 43-day Caribbean transatlantic itinerary in November, incorporating ports like Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands en route.[33][3]AIDAmar's primary homeports include Hamburg in Germany and Barcelona in Spain, with occasional departures from Rome's Civitavecchia port for Mediterranean routes. In response to economic pressures, the ship has adapted by emphasizing shorter 3- to 7-night itineraries to attract budget-conscious travelers, while aligning with AIDA Cruises' sustainability initiatives, such as utilizing shore power connections in ports like Hamburg and Palma de Mallorca, which AIDAmar was equipped for as early as 2018.[3][34][35]
Incidents
2020 IT and cyber issues
In December 2020, AIDA Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, experienced a significant ransomware cyber attack that disrupted IT systems across its headquarters in Rostock, Germany, and affected the entire fleet, including the AIDAmar.[36][37] The attack was detected on December 25, 2020, and was attributed to the DoppelPaymer ransomware group, which compromised networks both onshore and onboard, leading to widespread operational restrictions.[36][38] This incident was part of broader cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the cruise industry exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, following a similar attack on Carnival in August 2020.[38]The AIDAmar was directly impacted, with its New Year's Eve cruises canceled as a result of the IT failures, forcing passengers already onboard to continue voyages under manual procedures.[36][38] Onboard systems for booking, boarding passes, purchases, internet access, telephones, and computers were partially offline, requiring crew to use paper-based alternatives for transactions and communication.[36] No disruptions to critical navigation or safety systems were reported, ensuring that vessel operations remained secure despite the challenges.[36] The attack led to fleet-wide cancellations for AIDA voyages through mid-January 2021, with full service resumption delayed until March 2021.[37]AIDA's response included immediate captain announcements to inform passengers of the "massive IT issues" at headquarters, along with the issuance of full refunds and future travel vouchers for affected bookings.[36][38]Carnival engaged a leading cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach, notified law enforcement and regulators, and worked on system restoration, which took several weeks to complete without evidence of data misuse at the time.[37] German authorities, including a public prosecutor's office, launched an investigation into the potential cyber attack.[38]
COVID-19 related events
In early 2020, amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, AIDAmar was laid up in Hamburg starting in March, following the suspension of all AIDA Cruises operations as cruise lines worldwide halted passenger voyages to mitigate virus spread.[39] No active outbreaks were reported onboard prior to the layup.[31]In July 2020, during preparations for potential resumption, 10 crew members scheduled to board AIDAmar in Rostock tested positive for COVID-19 as part of routine occupational health screenings upon arrival from their home countries in Asia.[40] These individuals were immediately isolated in individual cabins onboard, with no impact on passengers since no guest operations were active at the time, and the ship was not placed under quarantine.[41]AIDAmar resumed service on July 31, 2021, embarking on seven-day cruises from Hamburg to Baltic Sea ports, marking one of AIDA's initial post-pandemic itineraries for German passengers.[33] The restart incorporated strict health protocols, including mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for all guests and crew, pre-embarkation testing, and mask requirements in indoor areas to prevent transmission.[42][43]Post-restart, AIDAmar integrated enhanced onboard medical measures, such as upgraded ventilation systems with advanced filters to improve air quality and rapid PCR testing kits for immediate symptom screening, aligning with broader Carnival Corporation initiatives across its fleet.[44]These operations contributed to AIDA Cruises' collection of real-world data on safe cruising protocols, demonstrating low infection rates and supporting industry efforts to validate enhanced hygiene standards for resuming international voyages.[45][46]
