In 2022, he set a franchise record for net punting average (42.8 yards). He has since earned additional Pro Bowl honors.[3][4] As of the 2025 season, over his 14-year NFL career, Anger has recorded 919 punts for 43,156 yards, with a gross average of 47.0 yards per punt—ranking ninth all-time among players with at least 500 punts—and a career-long punt of 83 yards.[4][5][3] At 6 feet 3 inches tall and 202 pounds, he remains an active player known for his consistency and directional punting accuracy.[6]Early life
Childhood and family
Bryan Anger was born on October 6, 1988, in Camarillo, California.[1] He grew up in this suburban community in Ventura County. Anger's family played a significant role in shaping his early interests and values. His parents, Michael Anger Sr. and Jean Anger, encouraged him and his siblings to engage in various sports, including soccer, basketball, and baseball, during his childhood.[7][8] He is the youngest of four siblings, with older brothers Michael Jr. (eight years his senior) and Matthew, as well as a sister, Sara.[8] The family had a strong military tradition, with both grandfathers having served, and brother Michael Jr. later joining the Air Force Reserve after playing college soccer at UC Irvine and football at the University of San Diego.[7] This background instilled a deep respect for service and discipline in Anger from an early age.[7]High school career
Bryan Anger attended Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo, California, where he developed his skills as a punter and wide receiver on the football team.[2] During his senior year, Anger averaged 41.8 yards per punt, including 11 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, while also contributing offensively with 42 receptions for 678 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver.[2] He was recognized for his performance with USA Today and EA Sports first-team All-American honors, as well as selections to the All-Far West team by SuperPrep, the PrepStar All-West Region team, and Cal-Hi Sports first-team All-State.[2] Anger's standout high school play earned him national rankings as a punter prospect, placing him No. 2 by Rivals and No. 5 by Scout, which sparked a recruitment process that resulted in scholarship offers from multiple Division I programs, including the University of California, Berkeley.[2] He was also named his school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, highlighting his dedication both on the field and in academics.[2]College career
University of California, Berkeley
Bryan Anger enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley in 2007, joining the California Golden Bears football team, and redshirted his freshman season before becoming the starting punter from 2008 to 2011.[2] During these four seasons, he established himself as one of the top punters in the Pac-10 Conference, contributing significantly to the Bears' special teams unit with consistent long-distance kicks that often pinned opponents deep in their territory.[9] His reliability as the primary punter allowed Cal to maintain field position advantages in numerous games, reflecting his technical proficiency developed from high school.[10] Anger's collegiate performance was highlighted by a career punting average of 43.5 yards, ranking second all-time at Cal and showcasing his power and accuracy.[9][2] He earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors three consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2011, becoming only the second player in Cal history to achieve this distinction for punters, and also received the College Football Performance Awards Elite Punter Trophy in 2010 and 2011.[10] Additionally, he was named Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week multiple times, including in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and served as a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2008 and 2010.[2] Key highlights included his standout performance against Stanford in 2008, where he set a school single-game record with a 60.2 yards per punt average on four attempts, featuring a career-long 76-yard punt that ranks among the longest in Cal history.[2] In 2010, Anger broke a 23-year-old school record by averaging 45.6 yards per punt for the season, while also booting a 71-yard punt against Stanford.[2] These moments underscored his ability to deliver in high-stakes rivalry games and against strong conference competition. Following his senior year in 2011, Anger declared eligibility for the 2012 NFL Draft, where his consistent excellence positioned him as a top prospect at his position.[9]College statistics

Professional career
Jacksonville Jaguars
Bryan Anger was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round, 70th overall, of the 2012 NFL Draft, marking the highest selection for a punter since 2005.[4] Following his standout college performance at the University of California, Berkeley, where he averaged over 44 yards per punt in his senior year, Anger quickly secured the starting role after the Jaguars released incumbent punters Nick Harris and Spencer Lanning shortly after drafting him.[12] He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $2,877,166, including a $662,500 signing bonus and $662,500 in guarantees, providing financial stability as he entered the league.[13] In his 2012 rookie season, Anger appeared in all 16 games and set an NFL record for single-season punting average among rookies with 47.8 yards per punt on 91 attempts, totaling 4,353 yards, which highlighted his powerful leg and potential as a weapon in the Jaguars' special teams unit.[14] This performance earned him a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team and established him as one of the league's top young punters, though the team struggled overall with a 2-14 record.[5] Anger's performance in subsequent seasons showed consistency but also faced challenges, including adapting to varying field conditions and occasional blocked punts. In 2013, he averaged 45.7 yards per punt across 95 attempts, a slight dip attributed to increased inside-20 placements (31 punts), emphasizing directional punting over raw distance.[15] He rebounded in 2014 with a 47.5-yard average on 94 punts, ranking among the league leaders in gross punting, though two blocked punts underscored ongoing refinement in protection schemes.[16] The 2015 season saw a 46.3-yard average on 80 punts, impacted by injuries to key return specialists that altered field position dynamics, but he maintained solid inside-20 efficiency with 26 such punts.[17] After completing his rookie contract, the Jaguars allowed Anger to become an unrestricted free agent in March 2016 without extending a tender or negotiating a new deal, effectively parting ways with the third-round pick amid roster rebuild efforts.[18]Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars following the 2015 season, Bryan Anger signed a one-year contract worth $1.75 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March 2016 to serve as their primary punter.[19] His strong performance that year led to a five-year, $17 million contract extension on December 31, 2016, securing his position through the 2021 season and making him one of the league's highest-paid punters at an average of $3.4 million annually.[20] During his tenure with the Buccaneers from 2016 to 2018, Anger provided consistent punting as a cornerstone of the team's special teams unit under coordinator Nate Kaczor. In 2016, he recorded a gross punting average of 45.9 yards on 70 punts, with 37 landing inside the opponents' 20-yard line (52.9%), contributing to improved field position for the defense.[21] His 2017 season saw a slight dip to a 44.0-yard average on 65 punts, including 24 inside the 20 (36.9%), amid a team transition but still maintaining reliability in directional kicking.[21] Anger rebounded in 2018 with a 45.0-yard average on 57 punts, though his inside-20 rate fell to 26.3% (15 punts), reflecting adjustments in special teams strategy without major coaching disruptions during Kaczor's stable oversight.[21] These efforts helped the Buccaneers rank competitively in net punting, emphasizing Anger's role in pinning opponents deep. The Buccaneers released Anger on March 13, 2019, freeing up approximately $3 million in cap space as they opted for a younger punter in free agent Bradley Pinion.[22]Houston Texans
Following his release by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March 2019, Bryan Anger signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans on September 17, 2019, after the team released punter Trevor Daniel.[23] In his first season with Houston, Anger appeared in 14 games, punting 45 times for 2,094 yards with a gross average of 46.5 yards per punt and placing 24 punts inside the 20-yard line, leading the NFL with a 53.3% inside-20 percentage.[4] His strong performance earned him a three-year contract extension worth $7.5 million on December 28, 2019.[24] In 2020, Anger remained the Texans' primary punter, appearing in all 16 games and recording 54 punts for 2,505 yards at a 46.4-yard average, with 19 inside the 20-yard line.[4] However, he dealt with a right quadriceps injury in November that limited his practice time and left him questionable for Weeks 11 and 12.[25] The Texans released Anger on March 18, 2021, as part of salary cap adjustments, saving $2.5 million.[26]Dallas Cowboys
Bryan Anger signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys on April 7, 2021, providing competition at the punter position after Chris Jones was released.[27][28] The deal marked his return to a starting role following limited play with the Houston Texans. In March 2022, he agreed to a three-year extension worth $9 million, securing his position through the 2024 season.[29] On March 11, 2025, Anger signed a two-year extension valued at $6.4 million, including $3.3 million in guarantees, keeping him with the Cowboys through 2026.[30][19][31] In his debut season of 2021, Anger emerged as a key special teams asset, punting 65 times for 3,143 yards with a gross average of 48.4 yards, the highest of his career at that point.[4] His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection, the first for a Cowboys punter since Mat McBriar in 2010, and he led the NFL with a 43.9-yard net punting average while placing 24 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.[32][33][34] Anger's consistency continued into subsequent seasons, culminating in second-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press and a Pro Bowl selection in 2023 for his league-leading net punting average and 17 punts inside the 20.[35][36][37] From 2021 to 2025, he maintained gross punting averages above 47 yards each year, ranking among the NFL's top performers in net average and inside-20 placements, which helped the Cowboys rank highly in special teams efficiency.[38][39] Through Week 9 of the 2025 season, Anger had recorded 29 punts for 1,362 yards, averaging 47.0 yards gross and 41.3 yards net, with 11 inside the 20-yard line.[40][21] Anger's booming kicks have been integral to the Cowboys' field-position strategy during multiple playoff appearances, including their 12-5 records in 2021 and 2022, where his ability to flip the field and limit return yards supported aggressive defensive stands.[33] Under special teams coordinator John Fassel, Anger has contributed to a unit emphasizing directional punting and coverage, reducing opponent starting field position by an average of 5-7 yards per punt compared to league norms.[41][42]NFL career statistics
