Following the CTS, the sender transmits the data frame after another SIFS, and the receiver responds with an ACK if the data is successfully received, completing the four-way exchange. Although primarily for hidden nodes, in scenarios involving the exposed node problem, the RTS/CTS protocol does not facilitate spatial reuse and can exacerbate the issue. Nodes that overhear the RTS set their NAV based on its duration field, deferring transmission for the entire exchange even if outside the CTS range, leading to unnecessary blocking. This extended deferral reduces concurrent transmissions in dense networks.
