Early life
Gunner Olszewski was born on November 26, 1996, in Alvin, Texas, to parents Eric and Collette Olszewski.[9][10] His father, Eric, had a background in professional baseball as a minor league pitcher in the Atlanta Braves organization.[8] Growing up in a sports-oriented family, Olszewski was influenced by his older brother, EJ, who played quarterback at Alvin High School and later pursued college football, fostering a competitive environment through backyard games that built Gunner's toughness and skills.[11] His younger brother, Bo, also participated in these family drills, further encouraging Olszewski's athletic development.[11] Olszewski attended Alvin High School, where he excelled as a two-sport athlete in football and baseball.[8] In football, he earned two varsity letters and was named to the First-Team All-District twice as a defensive back, including a senior season with 114 tackles that highlighted his defensive prowess.[3][12] He also contributed on offense as a wide receiver during his high school career.[13] In baseball, he secured two varsity letters as a catcher and outfielder.[8] Despite his high school accomplishments, Olszewski received limited recruiting attention, largely due to his 6-foot, 190-pound frame being considered undersized for major programs in talent-rich Texas.[13] This led him to commit to Bemidji State University, a Division II program, where he could continue developing as a defensive back.[14]College career
Olszewski attended Bemidji State University, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II institution and member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), from 2015 to 2018. He began his collegiate football career as a cornerback, starting all 42 games he played in that role and establishing himself as a standout defender with 310 total tackles (183 solo), 13 interceptions, 26 pass breakups, and 1 sack.[8] He continued to contribute on special teams as a return specialist throughout his career, transitioning to wide receiver after the 2018 season to pursue NFL opportunities. During his senior year in 2018, Olszewski recorded 63 tackles (36 solo), three interceptions, and four pass breakups on defense. That season, he also returned 16 punts for 269 yards (16.8 avg.) and three kickoffs for 57 yards, finishing with 424 all-purpose yards. His performance earned him NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, as well as selection to the NSIC North Division All-Conference First Team on both defense and special teams. Over his career, he returned 69 punts for 923 yards (including one touchdown) and 11 kickoffs for 327 yards, and was recognized as a two-time All-NSIC honoree, including Defensive Newcomer of the Year and All-NSIC First Team as a freshman in 2015, along with All-NSIC First Team on defense in 2017. He also earned AFCA Division II All-America First Team honors in 2018 and served as team captain in his final year.[13][8][15][3] In addition to football, Olszewski was a two-way athlete, participating in baseball for Bemidji State from 2015 to 2018 as a catcher, starting 91 games and demonstrating his multi-sport versatility. Following the 2018 season, he went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, underscoring his unconventional journey from Division II competition to generating professional interest through his athletic prowess and work ethic.[8][16]Professional career
New England Patriots
Olszewski signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 23, 2019, following the retirement of offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, which opened a roster spot.[16] A converted cornerback from Division II Bemidji State, he secured a position on the 53-man roster primarily as a punt returner after a strong training camp performance.[17] In his rookie 2019 season, Olszewski appeared in eight games, returning 20 punts for 179 yards at an average of 9.0 yards per return, while also recording two receptions for 34 yards.[1] He showed promise in the return game but committed one fumble and was placed on injured reserve on November 19 due to ankle and hamstring injuries, ending his campaign early.[18] Olszewski's 2020 season marked his breakout as a return specialist, though he missed the first three games after suffering a foot sprain in Week 1. Over 13 games, he returned 20 punts for 346 yards (17.3 average), including a 70-yard touchdown return against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 13 that earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.[1] His elite average led the NFL among qualifiers, securing Associated Press First-Team All-Pro recognition as the top punt returner.[19] Additionally, he contributed offensively with five receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown, plus 18 kick returns for 418 yards.[18] During the 2021 season, Olszewski played all 16 games despite injury setbacks, returning 26 punts for 309 yards (11.9 average) and 18 kickoffs for 416 yards, while adding two receptions for 31 yards.[1] In Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers, he sustained a head injury (concussion) on a kick return, ruling him out for the remainder of that game and causing him to miss the following week's matchup against the Cleveland Browns before returning in Week 11.[20] He also managed an ankle sprain in Week 12 but remained limited in practice and continued playing without missing additional time.[21] On March 16, 2022, the Patriots declined to tender Olszewski as a restricted free agent, effectively releasing him and allowing him to enter unrestricted free agency.[22] Across 37 games with New England from 2019 to 2021, he established himself as a special teams standout, logging 66 punt returns for 834 yards and one touchdown, 36 kick returns for 834 yards, and just nine offensive receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown, reflecting his limited role beyond returns.[1]Pittsburgh Steelers
Olszewski signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 21, 2022, worth $4.2 million, primarily to serve as a return specialist following his All-Pro recognition with the New England Patriots.[23][24] During the 2022 season, he appeared in all 16 games, mainly contributing on special teams with 8 punt returns for 55 yards and 3 kickoff returns for 46 yards, recording no return touchdowns.[1] As a depth wide receiver, Olszewski saw limited offensive action, catching 5 passes for 53 yards across the season.[18] His role remained focused on returns, though he also added 8 rushes for 39 yards in gadget situations.[1] Entering the 2023 offseason under the existing contract, Olszewski played in the first two games, handling 1 punt return for 8 yards and 2 kickoff returns for 24 yards.[1] He recorded 1 reception for 0 yards before the Steelers released him on October 20, 2023, due to performance errors, including fumbles, and roster competition following the return of key players like wide receiver Diontae Johnson.[25][26][27]New York Giants
Olszewski joined the New York Giants in 2023 after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers, signing to their practice squad on October 23 and being promoted to the active roster on November 3.[28][8] He appeared in 10 games that season primarily as a return specialist, handling 23 punt returns for 273 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown return against the Philadelphia Eagles, while recording limited offensive contributions with four receptions for 22 yards. He also returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17.[8][29] During the year, he dealt with a concussion in Week 3 but returned to play without being placed on injured reserve.[30] In 2024, Olszewski re-signed with the Giants on a one-year deal on March 11, positioning him to reprise his role on special teams.[31] However, he suffered a groin injury during pregame warmups before Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings on September 8 and was placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for the entire season with no games played or statistical output.[8][32] Olszewski returned to the Giants in 2025, signing on July 28 before being briefly released and re-added to the 53-man roster on August 29 following training camp.[33][34] Through 11 games as of November 19, 2025, with the team holding a 2-9 record, he has served mainly in return duties with 18 punt returns for 166 yards (9.2 average) but notched his first reception of the season—a 24-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jaxson Dart in Week 9 against the San Francisco 49ers on November 2—along with three kickoff returns for 80 yards in that contest.[35][36][37] Throughout his tenure with the Giants, spanning 21 games from 2023 to 2025, Olszewski has established himself as a versatile special teams asset with sporadic offensive involvement, leveraging his experience as a former All-Pro punt returner to provide depth and explosive potential.[29][2]Career statistics
