Founding and early development
LIM College was founded in 1939 by Maxwell F. Marcuse, a retail expert and educator, as the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) in New York City.[2] Marcuse, who had previously worked in export management, advertising for major retailers like R.H. Macy & Company, and as a member of the New York Board of Higher Education, established the institution at the request of leading department store executives seeking to address a shortage of trained professionals in the retail sector.[6][7] The school's initial mission centered on providing practical, hands-on education in merchandising and fashion business, blending classroom instruction with real-world experience to prepare students—primarily young women—for careers in the garment and retail industries.[6] The inaugural dedication ceremony took place on December 5, 1939, at the institution's first location on a single floor at 45 West 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan, where space was divided into simulated department store sections using actual merchandise for training in areas such as selling, advertising, buying, and fashion merchandising.[7] Classes began in early 1940 under Marcuse's direction, with faculty drawn from local retail executives, emphasizing clinical, practical skills amid the economic recovery following the Great Depression.[7] The program started as a one-year certificate course exclusively for women, reflecting the era's gender norms in retail roles, and graduated its first class of 79 students in 1941 after expanding to a two-year format.[8] In the post-World War II period, LIM experienced steady growth aligned with the retail industry's expansion, as consumer demand surged and the fashion sector in New York City flourished. The institution relocated to 677 Fifth Avenue in 1959 and purchased its iconic Townhouse building at 12 East 53rd Street in 1964, moving there the following year to accommodate increasing enrollment and facilities needs.[8][6] By the late 1960s, under the leadership of Marcuse's son Adrian G. Marcuse, who joined in 1962, LIM began evolving toward broader accreditation and degree offerings. A key milestone came in 1971, when the school transitioned to a co-educational institution, opening enrollment to men and expanding access to its specialized programs.[8][6]Expansion, rebranding, and recent leadership
During the presidency of Adrian G. Marcuse, who led the institution from 1972 to 2002, the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising underwent substantial expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, building on its earlier accreditation and coeducational transition. The college introduced bachelor's degree programs in fashion merchandising and related management fields, broadening its curriculum beyond associate degrees and certificate programs to meet evolving industry needs in the fashion business sector.[9] This period also saw enhancements to campus facilities, including upgrades to the historic townhouse at 12 East 53rd Street, to accommodate increasing student numbers and support hands-on learning in fashion management.[6] In 2009, the institution rebranded as LIM College to better encompass its expanded scope beyond traditional merchandising, emphasizing education in the broader fashion business and lifestyle industries. This change, initiated under the leadership of Elizabeth S. Marcuse who became president in 2002, marked a strategic evolution that aligned the college's identity with its growing academic offerings and industry partnerships.[10] Leadership transitioned again in late 2023 when Elizabeth S. Marcuse stepped down after over two decades, during which she oversaw the addition of master's programs and further institutional growth. Ron Marshall, a seasoned retail executive with prior experience as CEO of companies like Claire’s Stores and Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, assumed the presidency in January 2024. Marshall has prioritized innovation in experiential learning, leveraging his board advisory role since 2019 to advance strategic initiatives in fashion and lifestyle education.[11][12] In 2025, LIM College announced plans to become part of the Japan Educational Foundation (JEF), pending regulatory approvals, which will add it to JEF's international portfolio while allowing LIM to operate independently under Marshall's continued presidency, enhancing global opportunities for students.[13] As part of its modernization efforts under new leadership, LIM College sold its original 12 East 53rd Street building in August 2024 for $11 million to obstetrician Dimitry Goncharov, who plans to convert it for medical use. The landmarked six-story townhouse, acquired in 1964, had served as the primary campus hub but was deemed surplus amid shifts to contemporary facilities at 216 East 45th Street and 545 Fifth Avenue.[14]Academics
