Lootere
Lootere is a Hindi-language action crime drama television miniseries created by Hansal Mehta and Shailesh R. Singh, directed by Jai Mehta in his directorial debut, and released on Disney+ Hotstar on March 22, 2024.[1][2] The eight-episode series is inspired by real-life incidents of Somali piracy targeting Indian vessels and centers on the hijacking of a Ukrainian trading ship carrying Indian crew members off the coast of Somalia, where an Indian-origin entrepreneur named Vikrant Gandhi navigates perilous negotiations, internal betrayals, and survival struggles to resolve the crisis.[3][4] The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of tense regional politics in 2010s Somalia, blending high-stakes thriller elements with explorations of greed, loyalty, and moral ambiguity as hostages face life-threatening demands from pirates led by the formidable Barkhad. Key cast members include Vivek Gomber as the complex protagonist Vikrant Gandhi, Amruta Khanvilkar as his wife Avika, Rajat Kapoor as Captain A.K. Singh, Chandan Roy Sanyal in a supporting role, and Martial Batchamen Tchana as the pirate leader Barkhad, with additional performances by Aamir Ali, Abhishekh Khan, and Gitanjali Gill.[5] Produced by Karma Media and Entertainment, the series marks a collaborative family effort, with creator Hansal Mehta overseeing the project that draws from authentic accounts of maritime piracy to deliver a gripping, edge-of-the-seat experience.[6][7] Upon release, Lootere received praise for its taut pacing, authentic depiction of the Somali setting—largely filmed on location—and standout performances, particularly from Gomber and Kapoor, though some critics noted occasional melodramatic flourishes in the interpersonal drama. In 2025, director Jai Mehta won the Best Director (Series, Hindi) award at the Indian Streaming Academy Awards.[8][9][10] It garnered a 7.0 rating on IMDb from over 1,300 user reviews, highlighting its role as one of the few major Indian streaming productions set predominantly in Africa and its timely commentary on global crime and human resilience.[1]Production

Synopsis
Lootere is set in 2010s Somalia and follows Vikrant Gandhi (Vivek Gomber), an Indian-origin entrepreneur serving as the president of Mogadishu's port, whose business empire is crumbling under financial pressures. Desperate to salvage his fortunes, Vikrant arranges for a valuable contraband shipment aboard the Ukrainian cargo ship UK-Kyiv, crewed by Indian sailors and captained by A.K. Singh (Rajat Kapoor), to dock in Somalia.[8] En route off the Somali coast, the vessel is hijacked by a band of ruthless pirates led by the formidable Barkhad (Martial Batchamen Tchana), who take the captain and crew hostage, demanding ransom for their release. Stranded 300 miles from shore in the pirate stronghold of Harardhere, the hostages endure tense standoffs and survival ordeals aboard the ship.[8][14] On land, Vikrant, supported by his wife Avika (Amruta Khanvilkar) and business partner Ajay Kotwal (Chandan Roy Sanyal), engages in high-stakes negotiations with the pirates through intermediaries like the shadowy Umesh Gupta (Chirag Vohra). As regional politics, internal betrayals, and moral dilemmas unfold, Vikrant must confront his own greed and loyalties to orchestrate a resolution amid escalating dangers and betrayals from within his circle. The series explores themes of survival, ambition, and the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator in the lawless waters of the Indian Ocean.[16][17]Cast and characters
