Made in California
''Made in California'' (1962–2012) is a compilation box set by the American rock band the Beach Boys, released on August 27, 2013, by Capitol Records. It compiles 129 tracks recorded from 1962 to 2012, including more than 60 previously unreleased recordings, spanning the band's entire career. The set was curated by audio engineers Mark Linett and Alan Boyd, with a 142-page booklet featuring essays, photos, and liner notes by David Leaf.[1] The collection is structured across six thematic discs, tracing the band's evolution from their early surf rock hits through experimental periods, 1970s revival, and later works, including live recordings and rarities. Disc 1 covers the early surf era (1962–1966), Disc 2 the ''Pet Sounds'' and ''Smile'' era (1966–1967), Disc 3 late 1960s experimentation (1967–1973), Disc 4 the 1970s revival (1973–1979), Disc 5 1980s–1990s live and later studio tracks, and Disc 6 unreleased and alternate versions. Released to coincide with the band's 50th anniversary and the release of the ''50th Anniversary: The Complete Hits'' compilation, ''Made in California'' received positive critical reception for its comprehensive scope and archival value, though some noted overlaps with prior releases like ''The Pet Sounds Sessions''. It peaked at number 78 on the Billboard 200 and has been praised as the definitive Beach Boys anthology.[2]Background and Development
Conception
The Made in California box set was initially announced in 2012 as a centerpiece of the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary celebrations, intended for an early-year release to commemorate the band's formation in 1962, but delays due to various production issues postponed its launch until 2013.[3] The project aimed to provide a comprehensive retrospective of the group's fifty-year career, capturing their evolution from harmonious surf-rock origins to sophisticated studio experimentation and beyond.[4] Designed by Mark London, the set adopts the aesthetic of a high school yearbook, complete with a hardbound format, personal photos, memorabilia, and handwritten notes from the band members, evoking the youthful California culture that defined their early sound and image.[5] This visual concept ties into the band's roots in suburban Southern California, emphasizing themes of adolescence, friendship, and West Coast optimism central to their music.[4] The compilation sought to extend and update the 1993 box set Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys, incorporating material from the intervening two decades up to 2012, including tracks from the band's 50th anniversary reunion album That's Why God Made the Radio.[3] A key motivation came from the surviving core members—Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks—who advocated for the inclusion of over 60 previously unreleased recordings, particularly those featuring the late Wilson brothers Dennis and Carl, to honor their contributions and provide fresh insights into the group's lesser-known eras.[6]Compilation Process
The compilation of Made in California was led by producers Alan Boyd, Dennis Wolfe, and engineer Mark Linett, who conducted extensive archival research in Capitol Records' vaults to curate a comprehensive overview of the Beach Boys' career. This team, previously recognized with a Grammy for their work on The SMiLE Sessions, sifted through decades of recordings to select hits, rarities, outtakes, and previously unreleased material, ensuring a balanced representation of the band's output. Their efforts resulted in over 60 new tracks being unearthed, including demos, alternate mixes, and live performances, drawn from sessions spanning more than 50 years.[7][5] Tracks on discs 1 through 5 were arranged chronologically, tracing the band's evolution from their early surf rock roots in 1962—exemplified by energetic instrumentals and vocal harmonies—to more experimental phases in the late 1960s and beyond, such as the psychedelic innovations of Pet Sounds and SMiLE-era sessions, and into their mature, introspective work through the 1970s and 1980s. In contrast, disc 6 adopted a thematic approach, compiling unreleased live recordings, a cappella renditions, home demos, and other vault oddities from 1962 to 2012, providing a non-linear showcase of the group's vocal prowess and creative process across eras. This structure highlighted the Beach Boys' progression from beach-themed anthems to sophisticated studio experimentation and personal reflections.[5] The final set comprises 174 tracks across six discs, with a total runtime of 473:04 minutes, encapsulating the band's stylistic journey while prioritizing high-quality, official sources over unofficial circulating material.[5][8]Release and Promotion
Release Details
Made in California was released on August 27, 2013, through Capitol Records/UMe, marking the Beach Boys' first major archival box set in 20 years following the 1993 Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys.[9] Originally announced in 2012 for a late-year release, the project faced delays that pushed its rollout into the following year.[10] The physical edition consists of a limited 6-CD box set housed in a stylized yearbook-style packaging, accompanied by a hardcover book featuring rare photos, extensive liner notes authored by David Leaf, and additional essays providing historical context.[11][12] The set was also offered in digital formats for streaming and download, broadening accessibility beyond the physical collectible.[8] Initial retail pricing for the box set stood at approximately $119.98, reflecting its premium archival value.[13] Encompassing over 60 previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1960 and 2012, the collection serves as a definitive career-spanning anthology, blending hits, rarities, demos, and live recordings to chronicle the band's evolution.[14]Promotional Contest
To promote the Made in California box set, Capitol Records partnered with the crowdsourcing platform Tongal to launch two fan-engagement contests in summer 2013, encouraging creative contributions tied to unreleased tracks.[15] The first contest solicited submissions for a music video accompanying the unreleased song "California Feelin'". Participants competed in three phases—idea, pitch, and video production—from July 29 to September 27, 2013, with entries judged by representatives from Capitol Records and The Beach Boys based on creativity, alignment with project goals, and prior work quality. The total prize pool reached $10,500, including $250 for top ideas, $2,500 for the winning pitch, and up to $5,000 for the best final video, plus residuals. Winning videos were designated for sharing on the band's Facebook page and other online platforms to build anticipation for the album.[16] A separate contest, co-sponsored by Fender Guitars, invited fans to record and submit guitar solos for the track "Goin' to the Beach", an unreleased recording from 1979 featuring a basic guitar track. Entrants uploaded performance videos in HD format, focusing on an 8-bar solo section, with submissions judged by The Beach Boys and Capitol on musicianship, emotional depth, and production value; winners provided multi-track audio files for integration. The grand prize consisted of a custom "Made in California" Fender Stratocaster guitar valued at $2,875, the box set itself, and a VIP Fender factory tour package, while runners-up received Stratocaster guitars and additional merchandise. The winning solo, performed by Wolfgang Bruno Bruedlinger, was mixed into an alternate version of the song by Grammy-winning engineer Mark Linett and co-producer Alan Boyd, and incorporated into an alternate digital version of the song released as a bonus track.[17][18] These initiatives extended the album's interactive marketing by directly involving fans in its creative output, fostering community buzz ahead of the August 27 release.[15]Content
