Prisma Health
Prisma Health is a not-for-profit healthcare organization headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina, formed in 2017 through the merger of the Greenville Health System and Palmetto Health.[1][2] As South Carolina's largest private nonprofit health system, it operates 19 acute-care and specialty hospitals with 3,131 licensed beds, over 320 practice sites, and employs more than 32,000 team members, including 2,200 physicians.[1][3] The organization serves over 1.6 million patients annually across a 21-county region in South Carolina and parts of Tennessee, providing services in primary care, cancer treatment, heart care, orthopedics, neuroscience, and pediatrics.[1][4] Prisma Health has pursued initiatives to transform healthcare delivery, including efforts to improve population health, prevent disease, expand access to services, and reduce costs through alternative payment models.[5] It maintains academic affiliations, such as with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, supporting medical education, research with over 2,800 patients in clinical studies, and innovation recognized by Fortune's 2025 list of America's Most Innovative Companies.[6][7] However, the system has faced legal challenges, including a 2022 settlement of $1 million with the U.S. Department of Justice for alleged violations of the Controlled Substances Act related to improper prescription filling, and ongoing disputes with insurers like UnitedHealthcare over contract terms and reimbursement rates that disrupted patient access in 2023-2024.[8][9][10] A 2024 lawsuit alleges systemic overbilling of Medicaid patients, highlighting tensions in billing practices.[11]
