Smart Omega Esports, also known as Omega Esports, is a Philippines-based professional esports organization focused on Mobile Legends: Bang Bang competitions, operating as the official team of telecommunications provider Smart Communications.[1] The team competes in the franchise league Mobile Legends Professional League Philippines (MPL PH), with a history of international representation including qualification for the 2020 Mobile Legends World Championships on behalf of the Philippines.[2] Notable achievements include the women's squad, Smart Omega Empress, securing the MLBB Women's Invitational title in 2024 by defeating Team Vitality 3-0 in the finals, earning USD 180,000 and advancing their standing in global club rankings.[3][4] In August 2025, Smart Omega rejoined MPL PH Season 16 with a revamped roster, emphasizing sustained growth in the Philippine esports ecosystem under Smart's sponsorship.[5]History
Founding and Initial Launch (2019)
Smart Omega was founded in February 2019 as a professional esports organization through a partnership between PLDT Inc., Smart Communications, and the esports management firm Sterling Global Dragons.[6][7] The team, branded as PLDT-Smart Omega, was established to represent the telecommunications companies in competitive gaming and to contribute to the professionalization of esports in the Philippines.[6] The launch coincided with preparations for The Nationals, the Philippines' first franchise-based esports league, which began on March 17, 2019, and was sanctioned by the eSports National Association of the Philippines.[6] This league featured structured competitions across multiple titles, marking a shift toward formalized professional play in the local scene. Expansion into Multiple Esports Titles (2020–2021)
In late 2020, Smart Omega expanded beyond its core Mobile Legends: Bang Bang division by entering the Dota 2 competitive scene, with the team debuting in regional matches in September. This move positioned the organization to compete in Southeast Asian tournaments, leveraging Smart Communications' support for infrastructure and visibility. The Dota 2 roster participated in events like the PNXBET Invitationals, achieving notable results before facing challenges later in the year.[8][9] Early 2021 saw further diversification into mobile MOBAs with the formation of a League of Legends: Wild Rift team. On January 9, 2021, Smart Omega announced its roster, comprising experienced players such as JLC (Baron), Impressive (Jungler), Arise (Mid), Taymlaps (Dragon Lane), and Stronger (Support), many of whom had backgrounds in the Philippine PC League of Legends ecosystem. This entry targeted the Southeast Asia Icon Series and other regional qualifiers, reflecting the organization's strategy to adapt to Riot Games' mobile adaptation amid rising esports viewership in the format.[10][11] Concurrently, Smart Omega established a presence in fighting games by competing in Tekken 7 through The Nationals league. The division launched its season in April 2021, introducing a draft series format to foster competitive depth and player development in the Philippine fighting game community. This expansion complemented the organization's multi-title approach, drawing on Tekken's established local player base.[12] The period's expansions peaked in August 2021 with Smart Omega's entry into Call of Duty: Mobile via the acquisition of the roster from NRX Jeremiah 29:11 on August 3. This acquisition, which included key players from the acquired team, made Smart Omega the first Mobile Legends Professional League franchise to compete in the first-person shooter title, bringing its total divisions to five across MOBAs, strategy games, and shooters. In 2024, Smart Omega competed in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang's MPL Philippines Season 13, finishing 7th overall after the regular season on May 5 and failing to advance to playoffs.[17] The team showed early struggles, remaining winless through initial weeks before securing limited victories, but ultimately placed below playoff qualifiers like AP Bren and ONIC Philippines.[20] Later that year, in Season 14 concluding October 16, they achieved a 5th-6th placement, earning $11,060 in prize money amid a competitive field led by Aurora Gaming.[17] Additionally, Smart Omega reached the quarterfinals of the Snapdragon Pro Series Season 5 APAC Challenge on June 21, securing 1st-4th position and $1,000.[17] The 2025 season brought continued mid-tier results for the team in MPL Philippines. In Season 15, ending May 4, Smart Omega placed 8th, with $4,060 in prizes, reflecting ongoing challenges in securing top-half finishes.[17] They also competed in the SIBOL 2025 National Team Selection on April 22, finishing 7th-8th.[17] Season 16 saw a 7th-place finish on October 12, accompanied by $6,160 in earnings, though the team snapped a skid with wins like a 2-1 victory over TNC Pro Team in September.[17][21] In Call of Duty: Mobile, Smart Omega placed 7th-8th at the 2024 World Championship on August 10, marking a decline from prior international showings.[22] Roster adjustments intensified ahead of 2025, signaling a rebuild. This setup includes housing for athletes, high-end gaming stations, conference rooms for team meetings, and other amenities designed to facilitate round-the-clock preparation for tournaments.[27][28][29] New roster members are integrated directly into this environment upon signing, enabling immediate immersion in professional routines.[27] Complementing the bootcamp, Smart Omega operates the Omega Academy, a developmental program focused on scouting and nurturing rookie talent, particularly in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Smart Omega's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang division primarily competes in the Mobile Legends Professional League Philippines (MPL PH), the premier professional league for the game in the country. The team first gained significant attention with a runner-up finish in MPL PH Season 6 on October 25, 2020, securing qualification to represent the Philippines internationally.[17] [2] This performance marked an early highlight, challenging dominant teams like Bren Esports during the regular season.[19] In preparation for MPL PH Season 8 in July 2021, Smart Omega acquired the entire Execration roster to bolster their lineup, aiming to build on prior success.[34] However, following the season, the organization released the roster on July 19, 2021, effectively dissolving the team ahead of subsequent competitions.[35] [36] The division experienced a hiatus before returning for MPL PH Season 16 in August 2025, where they secured their first win early in the regular season but ultimately finished 7th, missing playoff contention on October 10, 2025. [37] Parallel to the main roster, Smart Omega maintains a women's division under the banner of Smart Omega Empress, which has achieved notable success in dedicated female competitions. Smart Omega entered the Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) competitive scene in September 2021 through the acquisition of the roster from NRX Jeremiah 29:11, marking the first expansion of a Mobile Legends: Bang Bang franchise into CODM.[40] The team, based in the Philippines, quickly established itself in regional qualifiers, though it faced an early setback by losing the CODM Champs Philippines title to Ultimate E-Pro Gaming with a 3-1 score in September 2021.[41] The division achieved breakthrough success in 2022, topping their group in the Garena CODM Masters with a 16-2 record and securing qualification for the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship.[42] At the World Championship in Raleigh, North Carolina, from December 15-18, 2022, Smart Omega advanced to the playoffs, defeating SKADE 3-1 in the upper bracket before consecutive 3-0 losses to Inco Stalwart and Tribe Gaming, finishing 5th-6th overall and earning $80,000 in prize money.[43] [44] This performance positioned them as the top Southeast Asian team that year, earning recognition as SPIN.ph's Breakthrough Team of the Year.[45] Entering 2023 as back-to-back Garena CODM Masters champions under captain Jerrold "Woopiiee" Regay, the team refreshed its lineup and qualified for the CODM Fall Invitational in Beijing, China, leading group stages with a 4-1 record.[46] [47] By 2024, Smart Omega competed in the CODM World Championship from August 10-18, placing 7th-8th after advancing from groups but falling in the playoffs.[48] The division continues to focus on Southeast Asian dominance, leveraging PLDT-Smart backing for training and regional events, though it has not yet secured a global title amid competition from North American and European squads.[47]Other Titles (Tekken 7 and Former Divisions)
Smart Omega fielded a Tekken 7 division beginning in 2019, with players including Juliano "Jules" Lozano and Gio representing the team at events such as ESGS 2019.[49] Jules, competing under the Smart Omega banner, secured second place in the Top Clans 2020 SEA Invitational on October 20, 2020, and second place in EVO 2021 - Tekken 7 Asia South.[50][51] The division also included Dannel "Pica" Lozano, who participated in The Nationals Season Two Tekken 7 tournament in 2020.[52] As of August 2021, Tekken 7 remained among the organization's active competitive titles alongside Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Dota 2, and Wild Rift.[13] No competitive activity has been reported since 2021, indicating the division's effective dissolution. The organization previously operated divisions in Dota 2 and League of Legends: Wild Rift, both launched around 2019–2021 as part of its expansion into multiple titles. In Dota 2, Smart Omega entered the scene in 2019 with an initial roster featuring players like Teehee, Shanks, Benhur, Skadi, and SGOD, competing primarily in Southeast Asian qualifiers.[8] The team was disqualified from the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) SEA Division I in November 2021 due to involvement in match-fixing, resulting in a ban from Valve-sponsored events and subsequent disbandment later that year, despite a partial lift of the ban in December 2021.[53][54] For Wild Rift, Smart Omega announced its roster on January 8, 2021, comprising baron laner JLC (Jaiby Paglingayen), jungler Impressive, mid laner Arise (Maynard), dragon laner Taymlaps, and support Stronger (Ronel Tan), later adding players like Glaceox.[55] The team posted strong early results, including 2-0 victories over Liyab Esports and Execration, plus a 2-1 win against Sunsparks in the Wild Rift Icon Series South Luzon group stage on April 27, 2021.[56] The division concluded operations in October 2021, with the organization issuing a public thank-you to the squad for their representation.Rosters
