Early life
Alan Trejo was born on May 30, 1996, in Los Angeles, California.[1] He grew up in nearby Downey, California, in a family with strong Mexican-American heritage; his parents' roots trace back to Morelos, Zacatecas, Mexico, where traditions such as daily Mexican cuisine were maintained in the household, later influencing his participation in international baseball representing Mexico.[9][10] Trejo is the son of Ray and Elsa Trejo, both educators in the Los Angeles area.[1] His father, Ray, coached varsity basketball at Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles for 13 years, instilling a competitive athletic spirit in the family from a young age.[1] Originally a basketball-oriented household, the Trejos shifted focus when Alan expressed his passion for baseball around age 11, with his father stepping down from coaching to guide him in youth baseball programs.[11] Trejo's early exposure to baseball came through local youth leagues in the Los Angeles area, where he developed his skills under his father's coaching, honing his abilities as an infielder before transitioning to organized high school athletics.[11]High school career
Alan Trejo attended Cathedral High School in Los Angeles for his first two years before transferring to Warren High School in Downey, California, for his junior and senior years, graduating in 2014. He played varsity baseball at both schools from 2011 to 2014.[9][12][13] Primarily a shortstop who also pitched, Trejo earned three-time All-CIF Division 3 first-team honors during his high school career.[1][9] He posted a career pitching record of 28-1 over high school, including 6-0 as a junior and 11-0 with a 0.89 ERA as a senior, while in his senior season he hit .453 at the plate.[4][5] He also received 2014 Perfect Game Honorable Mention Preseason All-American recognition and was named a California Region High School Honorable Mention All-America honoree that year.[4] To enhance his profile as a prospect, Trejo participated in summer baseball with the So Cal Bombers Black travel team from 2012 to 2014, competing in showcases organized by groups like Perfect Game and Baseball Factory.[4][14][15] Opting for collegiate development over immediate professional pursuits, Trejo committed to San Diego State University, where he continued his baseball career.[14][4]College career
Trejo enrolled at San Diego State University in 2014, where he played college baseball for the San Diego State Aztecs as an infielder, primarily at second base and shortstop, from 2015 to 2017. He redshirted the 2014 season.[16][4] As a freshman in 2015, Trejo appeared in 56 games, batting .266 with one home run and 20 RBIs.[16] In his sophomore season of 2016, he improved to a .302 batting average over 58 games, recording two home runs and 35 RBIs, while earning Mountain West Player of the Week honors in March after a strong weekend series.[16][17] Trejo's junior year in 2017 marked his breakout campaign, as he batted .332 with four home runs and 36 RBIs in 62 games, hitting .348 in conference play.[16][18] He earned second-team All-Mountain West Conference honors for his performance.[18] Trejo contributed significantly to the Aztecs' success, helping the team win the Mountain West Conference tournament championship with a 5-3 victory over Fresno State in the final.[19] Following his junior season, Trejo decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2017 MLB Draft, where he was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 16th round (476th overall).[1]| Year | Team | G | BA | HR | RBI |
