Childhood and family
Calvin Austin III was born on March 24, 1999, in Memphis, Tennessee.[1] He was raised in a sports-obsessed family that emphasized work ethic and grit, with his father, Calvin Austin II—a retired Memphis police officer who served for 25 years—playing a central role in instilling discipline and resilience.[4][5][6] His mother, Mimi Austin, a working mom, provided stability as the family anchor, coordinating with his father to ensure the children avoided daycare while balancing professional demands.[7] Austin grew up alongside four sisters—Cami Bea, Claudia-Ruthie, Naomi Pearl, and Bella Rose—in a household of five children that fostered values of loyalty and family strength.[7] From an early age, he dreamed of playing for the Memphis Tigers, inspired by his father's attendance at the University of Memphis.[8] His childhood involvement in multiple sports, including football, basketball, and track, reflected the family's athletic focus and carried into his high school years.[9]High school career
Calvin Austin III attended Harding Academy, a private Christian school in Memphis, Tennessee, where he emerged as a multi-sport athlete during his high school years from 2014 to 2017.[2] In football, Austin excelled as a wide receiver and return specialist over three varsity seasons, helping the Lions achieve a 22-13 record and advance to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Division II-A playoffs each year, including a semifinal appearance in 2015 and a first-round loss in 2017.[10][11][12] He was recognized as one of the top athletes in the Memphis area, recording notable performances such as a 97-yard punt return touchdown in a 2016 playoff game against Franklin Road Academy.[13] Despite his on-field success, Austin received limited football recruiting attention due to his smaller stature and primary focus on track.[14] Austin's track and field career at Harding was even more dominant, where he won nine TSSAA state championships in sprints and relays from his sophomore through senior years, along with setting multiple school records.[2] As a sophomore in 2015, he placed second in the Division II 200-meter dash at the state meet with a time of 21.91 seconds.[15] In his junior year of 2016, Austin claimed state titles in both the 100-meter dash (10.80 seconds) and 200-meter dash (21.84 seconds), contributing to Harding's team success.[16] During his senior season in 2017, he added another individual championship in the 100-meter dash (10.55 seconds) and participated in winning relay events, rounding out his nine titles overall.[16] His speed earned him seven Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State honors and invitations to national competitions, including the USA Track & Field World Youth Championships.[2][17] Austin's track prowess initially drew college recruiting interest, with the University of Memphis offering him a spot on their track team after his senior-year state win in the 100-meter dash; he committed to run track there before transitioning to football as a preferred walk-on in 2017, as no major football scholarships materialized.[18][19]College career
Memphis Tigers
Austin enrolled at the University of Memphis in 2018 as a preferred walk-on, having focused on track during high school, which honed his exceptional speed that would later define his college playing style.[20][8] Over four seasons from 2018 to 2021, he appeared in 49 games, evolving from a reserve contributor into a dynamic wide receiver renowned for his track-influenced burst and agility, amassing 156 receptions for 2,541 yards and 22 touchdowns while also serving as a punt returner with 29 returns for 323 yards.[2][3][21] His development accelerated in later years, particularly as a return specialist and deep threat, leveraging his speed to stretch defenses and create explosive plays. In 2019 and 2020, Austin earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference (AAC) honors as a receiver, recognizing his growing impact on the Tigers' offense. By his senior year in 2021, he emerged as a standout leader, topping the team in receptions (74) and receiving yards (1,149)—figures that also led the AAC—while scoring eight receiving touchdowns and earning first-team All-AAC accolades for the second straight season, along with first-team honors from Phil Steele and third-team recognition as a returner.[2][22][23] To prepare for the NFL Draft, Austin participated in the 2022 Senior Bowl, where he showcased his elite athleticism by running a 4.32-second 40-yard dash, further highlighting his potential as a speed-based playmaker.[14][24]Receiving Statistics

Professional career
2022 NFL season
Calvin Austin III was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round (138th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. His draft stock was bolstered by his exceptional speed, highlighted by a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, which generated excitement for his potential as a dynamic wide receiver and return specialist.[27][28][29] On June 6, 2022, Austin signed his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth $4,164,340 that included a $504,340 signing bonus. However, his season was derailed early when he suffered a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot during training camp, just before the first preseason game. The injury occurred on August 12, 2022, and he was placed on injured reserve on September 1, 2022, causing him to miss all 17 regular-season games.[30][31][32] With no on-field statistics for the year, Austin focused on rehabilitation following surgery to repair the Lisfranc injury. He continued his recovery at the Steelers' facility and remained engaged with the team by attending meetings and practices, allowing him to study the playbook and integrate mentally despite the physical setback.[27][33]2023 NFL season
Austin returned from a season-ending foot injury that caused him to miss his entire 2022 rookie campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, making his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2023 season against the San Francisco 49ers.[2] He appeared in all 17 games that year, starting once in Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, while primarily serving as a depth wide receiver and special teams contributor on punt returns.[34] In his receiving role, Austin hauled in 17 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown, with his lone score coming on a 72-yard reception from quarterback Kenny Pickett in Week 3 at Las Vegas, a play that highlighted his elite speed developed during his college tenure at Memphis.[34][35] He also added versatility to the offense with 11 rushing attempts for 57 yards and one touchdown, scoring on a 7-yard scamper in Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals during a 34–11 victory.[34] On special teams, Austin handled punt return duties, fielding 29 punts for 249 yards with an average of 8.6 yards per return and a long of 34 yards, though he did not score on returns that season.[34]2024 NFL season
In the 2024 NFL season, Calvin Austin III established himself as a reliable wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, appearing in all 17 games and earning 8 starts as the team's WR3 behind George Pickens and Diontae Johnson.[1] This expanded role provided him with significantly more opportunities compared to prior years, including 58 total targets and participation in approximately 53% of the team's offensive snaps.[1] Building on his recovery from the 2022 ankle injury that limited his rookie year, Austin delivered consistent production throughout the season. Austin recorded 36 receptions for 548 receiving yards, averaging 15.2 yards per catch, and achieved a career-high 4 receiving touchdowns, with his longest reception covering 55 yards.[36] His efficiency stood out at 9.45 yards per target, ranking among the league's better marks for wide receivers with at least 50 targets.[37] Rushing contributions were minimal, with 1 carry for 1 yard, while return duties remained minimal on offense-focused weeks, though he did log 28 punt returns for 289 yards overall.[1] Key highlights included multiple multi-reception performances, such as a career-best 5 catches for 65 yards in Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles and 4 receptions for 95 yards with a touchdown in Week 3 versus the [Los Angeles Chargers](/page/Los Angeles_Chargers).[38] In Week 8 against the New York Giants, he hauled in 3 catches for 54 yards and a score, adding a 73-yard punt return touchdown for a multi-phase impact.[39] Despite his 5-foot-9 stature, Austin showed growth in contested situations, notably with a 21-yard grab in Week 1 where he elevated over Jets cornerback Brandon Stephens for a contested completion.[40]2025 NFL season
In his fourth season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Calvin Austin continued to develop as a dynamic wide receiver during the ongoing 2025 NFL regular season. As of November 15, 2025, following Week 10, he has appeared in seven games, primarily serving in a rotational role while contributing on special teams as a punt returner.[41][2] Austin's receiving production through those appearances included 21 receptions for 237 yards, averaging 11.3 yards per catch, and two touchdowns.[42][36] His role emphasized his speed on intermediate routes, where he accounted for approximately 23.5% of the team's total air yards, highlighting his growing involvement in the passing attack.[43] No major injuries have been reported for Austin in 2025, allowing him to maintain consistent availability.[1] Notable performances included a season-highlight outing in Week 9, where he caught five passes for 56 yards during the Steelers' 27-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.[42] In Week 8, Austin recorded four receptions for 28 yards in a 35-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers. In Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers, he recorded 2 receptions for 14 yards in a 10–25 loss. On special teams, he has returned 2 punts for 9 yards. These efforts built on the foundation of his career-high 2024 season, where he emerged as a key depth option.[44]Career statistics
