Choi Byung-chan
Choi Byung-chan (born November 12, 1997) is a South Korean singer and actor, best known as a member of the boy band VICTON.[1][2] Choi debuted as a member of VICTON under Plan A Entertainment (later IST Entertainment) on November 9, 2016, with the group's first mini-album Voice to New World and the lead single "I'm Fine."[2] In 2019, he appeared as a contestant on Mnet's survival show Produce X 101, where he gained significant recognition before voluntarily leaving in the later stages due to health concerns.[3] His participation helped elevate VICTON's visibility, contributing to the group's first music show win in November 2019 with "Nostalgic Night."[4] Transitioning into acting, Choi made his debut in the 2020 JTBC drama Live On, portraying the role of Kim Yoo-shin, a popular high school student and school president.[5] He followed this with supporting roles in The King's Affection (2021) as Kim Ga-on, a royal guard and childhood friend of the leads, and in A Business Proposal (2022) as Shin Ha-min, Shin Ha-ri's younger brother.[6][7] In April 2023, after his contract with IST Entertainment expired, Choi signed an exclusive contract with New Way Company to further develop his career in both music and acting.[5] As of 2025, he continues to focus on acting roles and solo activities, including fanmeetings.[8]Early life
Background and family
Choi Byung-chan was born on November 12, 1997, in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, South Korea.[1] He grew up in a close-knit family as the youngest child, with an older brother born in 1990 and an older sister born in 1992.[9] Little additional public information is available about his parents' professions or family dynamics, respecting the privacy typical for South Korean entertainers. From a young age, Byung-chan shared a particularly strong bond with his mother, often mentioning her support in interviews.[10] He also maintains pets as part of his family life, including two cats named Bree and Mori, whom he frequently features in personal social media updates.[8] Byung-chan's early background reflects a typical upbringing in provincial South Korea, where he developed an initial passion for music and performance, laying the foundation for his later career in entertainment.[9]Education and pre-debut training
He grew up in the area and attended Jeonju Pungnam Middle School, graduating from there before entering high school.[9][11] During his first year of high school, Byung-chan decided to pursue a career in music, leading him to drop out to focus on his training as an idol. He later passed the High School Graduation Qualification Exam (commonly known as the GED in Korea) to obtain his high school diploma equivalency. No further formal higher education is documented in his biography.[12][11] Byung-chan's pre-debut training began after he auditioned for A Cube Entertainment (later rebranded as Plan A Entertainment in 2015) with a performance of FTISLAND's "I Confess." He joined as a trainee around 2013, undergoing rigorous preparation in vocals, dance, and performance skills for approximately three years. As one of the agency's early trainees, he honed his abilities alongside future group members, participating in survival show auditions, where he was eliminated early. His training emphasized building stage presence and versatility, culminating in his debut with the boy group VICTON in November 2016.[11][9]Career
2016–2018: Debut with Victon
Choi Byung-chan made his debut as a vocalist and visual in the South Korean boy group Victon under Plan A Entertainment (later IST Entertainment) on November 9, 2016, with the release of their first mini album Voice to New World and the lead single "I'm Fine," which featured Apink's Son Na-eun in its music video. The group, consisting of seven members, promoted the track through performances on music shows such as Music Bank, marking Byung-chan's entry into the K-pop industry as a key contributor to Victon's vocal harmonies and stage presence.[2][12][13] In 2017, Victon continued their momentum with two additional mini albums, both featuring Byung-chan prominently in vocal parts and choreography. The second mini album Ready was released on March 2, led by the energetic track "Eyez Eyez," which highlighted the group's dynamic performances and Byung-chan's role in delivering the song's catchy hooks. Later that year, on August 23, they returned with Identity and its title track "Unbelievable," a more mature concept that showcased Victon's evolving sound, with Byung-chan participating in promotional showcases and music show stages to build the group's fanbase.[14][15] Byung-chan remained active with Victon into 2018, contributing to their first single album Time of Sorrow, released on May 23 as a poignant ballad that shifted the group's image toward emotional depth. The track's promotions, including performances on shows like Show Champion, emphasized Victon's vocal strengths, where Byung-chan's timbre added to the heartfelt delivery. That September, the group embarked on their first Europe tour, performing in cities like Moscow and London, allowing Byung-chan to connect with international fans through live renditions of their discography.[16][17][18]2019: Produce X 101 participation and withdrawal
In early 2019, Choi Byung-chan, a member of the boy group Victon, took a temporary hiatus alongside fellow member Han Seung-woo to participate in Mnet's survival show Produce X 101 as a trainee under Play M Entertainment (formerly Plan A Entertainment).[3][19] His decision to join the program stemmed from a desire to gain greater recognition after three years of limited success with Victon, aiming to showcase his skills in vocals, dance, and performance.[3] During the competition, Choi demonstrated strong potential, particularly in group performances and individual evaluations. He achieved a peak ranking of No. 14 in episode 6 and was at No. 16 in the episode preceding his exit, positioning him as a viable contender for the top 10 and potential debut in the show's resulting group, X1.[20][3] His participation garnered significant fan support, with one related Naver article receiving over 2,000 likes and 1,000 comments, highlighting his growing popularity among viewers.[3] However, Choi had been managing a pre-existing chronic Achilles tendonitis, for which he received ongoing treatment while competing.[20] On July 10, 2019, Play M Entertainment announced Choi's withdrawal from Produce X 101 just before the second-to-last episode and a week from the finale, citing the intensification of pain from his Achilles injury over recent months, which also imposed a substantial psychological burden and prevented him from performing at full capacity.[20][19][3] The agency stated that the decision followed thorough discussions with medical professionals and emphasized their commitment to supporting his recovery through rest and treatment, while expressing regret to fans, the production team, fellow trainees, and viewers.[20] As a result, he was unable to participate in the planned Mnet special stage performance of "Move" with the subunit SIXC on July 11.[19] The withdrawal sparked immediate controversy and emotional distress for Choi, who later reflected on feeling as though he had betrayed his supporters and struggled with a sense of emptiness, especially as Han Seung-woo continued to the finale and debuted in X1.[3] Actor Lee Dong-wook, a senior in the industry, provided encouragement during this period, assuring Choi, "Byung Chan, you’re not running away," which helped alleviate his guilt.[3] Following his exit, Choi focused on rehabilitation and rejoined Victon for their comeback promotions with the album Nostalgia later that year.[3]2020–2022: Group return, acting debut, and rising prominence
Following his withdrawal from Produce X 101 in July 2019 due to health concerns, Choi Byung-chan rejoined Victon for group activities later that year, with the agency's announcement in January 2020 confirming leader Han Seung-woo's return and the group's preparation for a full seven-member comeback in March.[21] On March 9, 2020, Victon released their sixth mini album Continuous, featuring the lead single "Howling," marking their first release as a complete lineup since 2018 and showcasing Byung-chan's contributions to vocals and performance.[22] The album highlighted the members' strengthened bond after individual challenges, with Byung-chan noting in interviews the emotional investment in demonstrating their growth.[22] In June 2020, Byung-chan received his first acting offer for the JTBC youth drama Live On, where he portrayed Kim Yoo-shin, the loyal friend of the protagonist with a charming, puppy-like personality.[23] The series premiered on November 4, 2020, marking his official acting debut and earning him recognition for his natural portrayal of a supportive high schooler navigating friendship and subtle romance.[24] Amid Victon's January 11, 2021, release of their debut full-length album Voice: The Future Is Now—including the title track "What I Said," which emphasized themes of determination—Byung-chan balanced promotions with expanding his acting portfolio.[25] He was confirmed for the historical drama The King's Affection in March 2021, playing the scholarly Jung Ji-woon opposite leads Park Eun-bin and Rowoon, a role that further highlighted his versatility in period settings.[6] Byung-chan's rising profile continued into 2022 with additional acting opportunities and Victon's active schedule. In August 2021, he was cast as the reliable colleague Shin Ha-min in the romantic comedy A Business Proposal, which aired on SBS starting February 2022 and became a hit for its lighthearted narrative.[26] Reflecting on the character in April 2022, Byung-chan described Ha-min as a steady supporter whose growth mirrored his own acting journey, crediting influences like senior actors for his preparation.[7] Victon supported his endeavors with comebacks, including the January 18 single album Chronograph—the first in their "Time" trilogy—and the May 31 mini-album Chaos with the track "Stupid O'Clock," where Byung-chan's participation in choreography and vocals contributed to the group's best first-week sales to date, over 93,000 copies.[27][28] These projects solidified his prominence as a multifaceted artist bridging music and drama.2023–present: Agency transition and solo activities
In April 2023, Choi Byung-chan, along with fellow Victon members Do Han-se and Jung Su-bin, chose not to renew their contracts with IST Entertainment upon expiration. On May 15, 2023, he signed an exclusive contract with New Way Company, marking a significant shift in his career management as he transitioned to solo pursuits while maintaining his affiliation with Victon.[5] Following the agency change, Choi focused on building his individual profile through international fan engagements. In May 2023, his new agency announced his first solo fan meeting in Japan, titled "PICNIC - Always with you-," held in July 2023 to connect with overseas supporters.[29] He extended this outreach with a solo fan meeting in Thailand on July 15, 2023, emphasizing personal interaction and performances tailored to regional fans.[30] This momentum continued into 2025 with his fan meeting "STAY," performed on April 12, 2025, at Seongam Art Hall in Seoul, featuring two sessions to accommodate domestic audiences.[31] In November 2025, to mark VICTON's 9th anniversary, the members reunited for a group photo, reaffirming their bond. Choi expanded his acting portfolio with roles in web dramas under his new agency. In 2024, he portrayed Kim Eun-tae, a main character in the three-episode musical web series Unknown, Untitled, Unmastered (also known as UUU), which aired from October 4 to 18 and explored themes of time leaps and school life through ensemble performances.[32] Complementing this, he contributed to the series' soundtrack with the collaborative track "See U There" alongside Kep1er's Choi Yu-jin and ONEUS's Xion, released on October 18, 2024, as part of the UUU original television soundtrack.[33] In 2025, he took on the lead role of Hong Baek-ho in the upcoming romance drama Love Phobia, set to air on U+ Mobile TV, depicting emotional dynamics between a novel writer and a dating app CEO; the eight-episode series highlights his evolving screen presence in ensemble casts including Yeonwoo and Kim Hyun-jin.[34][35]Works
