Foregone
Foregone is the fourteenth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band In Flames. It was released on 10 February 2023 through Nuclear Blast.[1] The album was produced by In Flames and Chris Broderick at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden, and features 12 tracks blending the band's signature melodic death metal sound with alternative metal and modern production elements. It explores themes of existential decay, rebirth, and human fragility, influenced by the band's evolution since their 1990s origins. Lead single "State of Slow Decay" was released in November 2022, followed by "Meet Your Maker" and "Foregone, Pt. 2".[2][3] Foregone received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its return to heavier riffs and melodies reminiscent of the band's earlier work, while noting some modern pop influences. On Album of the Year, it holds an average score of 78/100 based on 10 critic reviews.[4] On Rate Your Music, it has a 3.1/5 rating from over 1,800 user ratings as of 2024.[5] The album debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, marking In Flames' highest US chart positions.[6]Background and recording
Development
In Flames re-signed with Nuclear Blast Records in June 2022, extending their long-standing partnership on a worldwide basis ahead of the album's production.[7] This deal came shortly after the band began songwriting sessions around Christmas 2021, during a period of travel restrictions easing that allowed initial collaborative work in the United States.[8] The songwriting for Foregone marked a deliberate shift toward heavier, more aggressive melodic death metal elements, aiming to reconnect with the band's earlier intensity following the more alternative-leaning I, the Mask (2019).[9] Guitarist Björn Gelotte and vocalist Anders Fridén drove much of the creative process, emphasizing urgent riffs and dynamic structures to recapture the group's Gothenburg roots while incorporating modern production polish.[10] This evolution was bolstered by lineup adjustments, including the full integration of guitarist Chris Broderick—formerly of Megadeth and Act of Defiance—who joined in 2021 as the lead guitarist after Niclas Engelin stepped back due to ongoing health challenges.[10] Drummer Tanner Wayne, who had been with the band since 2018 following his tenure in groups like Underminded and Scary Kids Scaring Kids, contributed to the album's rhythmic foundation, providing continuity amid the changes. Bassist Bryce Paul, a member since 2017, also participated, though Foregone would prove to be his final recording with the group before his departure in June 2023.[11] The band selected producer Howard Benson for Foregone, continuing a collaboration that began with Battles (2016) and carried through I, the Mask, valued for his ability to balance aggression with accessibility in modern metal.[12] Benson's involvement helped refine the material's raw energy, ensuring the album aligned with In Flames' goal of delivering a potent return to form without fully abandoning their evolved sound.[9]Recording
The primary recording for In Flames' album Foregone took place at West Valley Recording Studios in Woodland Hills, California, spanning from a four-week pre-Christmas session in late 2021 through demos in mid-January 2022 and principal tracking completed over the following 2.5 months, concluding in mid-2022.[10][12] Engineer Mike Plotnikoff handled the sessions at the studio, which is owned by producer Howard Benson.[13] Howard Benson served as the album's producer, focusing on a production approach that integrated modern metal aggression with the band's signature melodic elements, prioritizing punchy guitar tones and dynamic drum integration to evoke a raw, live energy.[14][13] Sessions were structured around 4-6 hour daily blocks, allowing the band to refine arrangements while capturing technical precision in performances.[10] Guitarist Chris Broderick contributed lead solos infused with neo-classical and thrash influences, often using a seven-string guitar tuned to C standard, enhancing the album's intricate riff structures and melodic leads.[10] Drummer Tanner Wayne provided the rhythms, delivering precise and athletic patterns that supported the album's high-energy tempos and breakdowns, marking his only full recording tenure with the band as he departed in May 2025.[10][15] The album was finalized at a total length of 46:46 across 12 tracks, with mixing handled by Joe Rickard at SoundBox Recording and additional input from Roberto Laghi on one track, while mastering was completed by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound as part of Benson's production team.[16][4][17]Music and lyrics
Musical style
Foregone represents a return to In Flames' melodic death metal roots within the broader heavy metal genre, incorporating elements of groove metal and alternative metal while drawing from the Gothenburg scene's signature melodic intensity. The album blends aggressive, riff-driven compositions with melodic hooks, evoking the band's early works but updated with modern production sheen. Reviewers have noted its fusion of classic melodeath aggression and contemporary accessibility, marking a shift away from the more experimental alternative rock leanings of previous releases.[14][18][19] Central to the album's sound are its dynamic instrumentation and vocal contrasts, featuring Anders Fridén's interplay between harsh guttural growls, raspy cleans, and iconic screams that heighten the melodic tension. Guitarists Björn Gelotte and Chris Broderick deliver aggressive, interlocking riffs alongside neoclassical leads, with Broderick's technical flair adding sophisticated shredding and harmonic depth. Drummer Tanner Wayne provides propulsive, dynamic rhythms, including blastbeats and double-kick patterns that underscore the tracks' heaviness. Subtle symphonic undertones and occasional electronic flourishes enhance the atmospheric layers without overpowering the core metal drive.[20][21][14] Compared to the band's Gothenburg origins in albums like Whoracle (1997), Foregone evolves from the experimental phases of later works such as Battles (2016), reclaiming a heavier, more direct melodeath edge while integrating groove-oriented mid-tempos and progressive touches. Tracks like "The Great Deceiver" exemplify this as a mid-tempo crusher with sharp, snaking riffs and harmonic guitar interplay reminiscent of mid-2000s classics. "Foregone, Pt. 2" incorporates moody electronic elements and massive dynamic shifts, blending mid-paced grooves with explosive choruses, while "State of Slow Decay" highlights stompy rhythms and intricate fretwork for anthemic energy. This synthesis positions Foregone as the band's heaviest effort since Clayman (2000), balancing nostalgia with forward momentum.[19][18][20]Themes
The album Foregone explores central themes of existential decay, personal redemption, and societal critique, often framed through the lens of post-pandemic introspection. These motifs emerge from the band's reflections on a world marked by stagnation and impending collapse, influenced by global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts. Vocalist Anders Fridén has described the writing process as born out of frustration during the pandemic era, which amplified observations of societal disconnection and personal inertia.[22][23] Guitarist Björn Gelotte emphasized a continuous thread of "impending global doom," drawing from climate deterioration and the Ukraine war as catalysts for lyrics addressing humanity's failure to learn from crises.[24] Specific songs illustrate these themes with vivid examples. In "State of Slow Decay," Fridén confronts mental stagnation and the weight of inner burdens, portraying a world "falling apart" amid personal and collective despair, which he linked to the post-pandemic fallout's impact on global outlook.[23][25] Similarly, "Meet Your Maker" delves into mortality and the search for meaning, urging listeners to "say something that makes sense" in the face of existential finality, reflecting desperation in a chaotic, post-pandemic dystopia.[26][27] Fridén's vocal delivery reinforces this thematic duality, alternating aggressive growls for confrontation with melodic cleans for vulnerability, mirroring the tension between decay and redemption.[28] The album draws on In Flames' historical influences, incorporating environmental motifs of a dying "Mother Earth" and anti-war sentiments echoing earlier works, while critiquing societal inaction in tracks like "Foregone Pt. 2," where the world "corrodes" unchecked.[28][24] This creates an overall narrative arc of a "foregone" conclusion to personal and collective struggles—an odyssey from frustration to resigned introspection, cohesive from the instrumental opener to the title track's resolution.[24][29]Release and promotion
Singles
The lead single from Foregone, "State of Slow Decay", was released on June 13, 2022, accompanied by a music video directed by Patric Ullaeus.[30] The track explores themes of personal transformation and decay, with lyrics depicting a distorted self-reflection and an inevitable shift into something unfamiliar. As the first preview of the album, it marked In Flames' re-signing with Nuclear Blast Records and generated early buzz through its aggressive melodic death metal riffs and live performances on the band's 2022 North American tour.[7] The second single, "The Great Deceiver", followed on August 1, 2022, featuring an official lyric video.[31] The song addresses themes of deception and frustration, originally inspired by reactions to false flags but evolving to encompass broader societal and personal betrayals.[32] It built on the momentum of the lead single with its heavy, riff-driven structure, coinciding with the announcement of In Flames' fall 2022 European tour alongside At The Gates.[33] "Foregone, Pt. 1" arrived as the third single on September 15, 2022, paired with a lyrics video that also served as the album's title reveal.[34] This track sets a brooding, atmospheric tone reflective of the album's overarching motifs of loss and finality, providing fans with an early glimpse into the record's cinematic scope ahead of pre-orders.[35] The fourth single, "Foregone, Pt. 2", was issued on November 7, 2022, completing the two-part suite with a full music video directed by Vicente Cordero.[36] Expanding on its predecessor, the song intensifies the themes of existential closure through dynamic shifts from melody to aggression, further heightening anticipation for the album's February 2023 launch.[37] "Meet Your Maker" served as the fifth and final pre-album single, released on January 16, 2023, just weeks before Foregone's street date to amplify hype.[38] The track delivers a pulsating, high-energy assault with confrontational lyrics urging reckoning, positioning it as a climactic teaser that underscored the album's return to the band's melodic death metal roots. In February 2024, a digital bonus edition of Foregone was released, adding the previously unreleased track "Become One" as a bonus.[39] This new song blends the album's thematic elements of unity and dissolution with soaring choruses and intricate guitar work, offering fans an extended listen one year after the original release.[40]Marketing
The album Foregone was released on February 10, 2023, through Nuclear Blast Records, marking In Flames' fourteenth studio album and their continued partnership with the label following a re-signing announced in June 2022.[7][41] The rollout began in June 2022 with the release of the lead single "State of Slow Decay," followed by additional singles such as "The Great Deceiver" in August and the title track "Foregone Pt. 1" alongside the full album announcement on September 15, 2022, building anticipation through a phased pre-release strategy that included pre-order availability across multiple platforms.[7][41][34] The cover artwork, designed by longtime collaborator Blake Armstrong, depicts the band's Jesterhead mascot in a menacing, faceless form overlooking figures marching toward oppression, incorporating metallic textures, cogs, and timepieces like stopwatches and hourglasses to evoke themes of inevitability and the passage of time amid darker tones reflective of the album's creation during the pandemic.[42][41] Foregone was made available in various physical and digital formats, including standard CD digipak, multiple vinyl variants such as limited-edition red, transparent blue, glow-in-the-dark, and silver marbled double LPs, as well as cassette editions and standard digital downloads; a digital bonus edition followed on February 9, 2024, adding the new track "Become One."[43][44][39] The album won the Swedish Grammis for Best Hard Rock/Metal in 2024.[45] Pre-release promotion emphasized the album as a "return to form" for the band, with vocalist Anders Fridén highlighting in interviews its aggressive, riff-driven sound drawing from In Flames' melodic death metal roots, while social media teasers from the band's official channels and Nuclear Blast featured snippet previews, visualizers, and behind-the-scenes content to generate fan engagement leading up to launch.[46][47][41] In October 2025, the band announced a live album, Breathing Fire - In Flames Live 2024, recorded during their 2024 tour supporting Foregone, set for release on November 28, 2025, as a limited-edition picture disc for Record Store Day Black Friday.[48]Touring
Initial performances
The single "State of Slow Decay" from the upcoming album Foregone made its live debut at the Sweden Rock Festival on June 10, 2022, in Sölvesborg, Sweden, where In Flames performed it as a brand-new track during their set.[49] The band followed this with another performance of the song at the Nova Rock Festival on June 12, 2022, in Nickelsdorf, Austria, integrating it into their setlist alongside classics like "Cloud Connected" and "Graveland".[50] During the fall 2022 tour, which supported the band's prior album I, the Mask, tracks from Foregone were incorporated into setlists across North American dates, including "State of Slow Decay" and, following its September 2022 single release, "Foregone Pt. 1".[51] For instance, at the Aftershock Festival on October 7, 2022, in Sacramento, California, the band played "State of Slow Decay" amid a mix of older material, marking an early testing of the new songs in larger festival environments before the album's full release.[52] In smaller venues during this tour, such as The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland, on September 10, 2022, fans responded enthusiastically to the new material, with reports noting strong crowd energy during performances of "State of Slow Decay" and the emerging setlist staples that showcased the band's evolving sound. This period highlighted the live chemistry between guitarist Chris Broderick, who joined in 2019 as a touring member and became permanent in 2022, and drummer Tanner Wayne, with reviewers praising their seamless interplay in solos and rhythms that added precision and dynamism to the previews of Foregone tracks.[53] Pre-album release promotion included pro-shot streams of festival sets featuring the debuts, such as the full Nova Rock 2022 performance uploaded in mid-June 2022, allowing global fans to experience the new material shortly after its onstage premiere.[50]Foregone Tour
The Foregone Tour began with a European leg in 2023, consisting of festival appearances and club shows in the wake of the album's February release. Key performances included a headline slot at Bloodstock Open Air in Catton Park, Derbyshire, UK, from August 10 to 13, and a club show at Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 21, 2023. These outings allowed the band to showcase material from Foregone alongside classics, building momentum for subsequent international dates.[54][55] In 2024, In Flames launched the dedicated U.S. leg of the Foregone Tour, running from May 1 to 26 and supported by Gatecreeper and Creeping Death. The 18-date run started at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine, and concluded at the South Side Music Hall in Dallas, Texas, drawing crowds to venues across the East Coast, Midwest, and South. Setlists typically featured 5 to 7 tracks from Foregone, including staples like "Deliver Us," "In the Dark," and "State of Slow Decay," balanced with fan favorites such as "Cloud Connected" and "Only for the Weak."[56][57] The tour extended into 2025 with a co-headlining North American outing alongside Machine Head from April 5 to May 10, supported by Lacuna Coil and Unearth. The trek, consisting of over 25 dates, kicked off at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California, and wrapped up in Kelowna, British Columbia. Following Tanner Wayne's departure on May 27, 2025, drummer Jon Rice joined for subsequent European dates. In Flames then embarked on a separate European headline tour starting June 2 in Tallinn, Estonia, featuring festival appearances at events like Rock am Ring and Mystic Festival. Summer commitments included additional festival slots.[58][59][60][61] Several shows across the tour legs sold out in advance, including the October 4, 2024, date at the Academy in Manchester, UK, during a co-headline run with Arch Enemy. Setlists evolved over time, incorporating the Japan-exclusive bonus track "Become One" after its wider digital release on February 9, 2024, often slotted mid-set to highlight the album's heavier edges. These adjustments reflected the band's responsiveness to audience energy and the tour's emphasis on blending new material with their catalog.[62][63] Overall, the Foregone Tour marked a pivotal resurgence for In Flames' live presence, reaffirming their status as melodic death metal pioneers through high-energy performances that critics and fans hailed as a "return to form," recapturing the intensity of their early Gothenburg sound while showcasing the album's thematic depth in a live context.[64]Reception
