Announcement
Armin van Buuren announced his fifth studio album, Intense, on February 28, 2013, through his official website and social media platforms, marking the public reveal of the project during an episode of his radio show A State of Trance.[4][5] In his statement, van Buuren described Intense as a genre-bending collection that captured the "intense ride" of his life over the previous two years, encompassing extensive global touring, personal milestones, and creative experimentation with diverse sounds and instruments.[6][5] He emphasized his perfectionist approach, noting that some tracks required months of refinement to blend trance with elements of house, electro, and rock.[5] Serving as the follow-up to his 2010 album Mirage, Intense arrived nearly three years later amid van Buuren's packed schedule as a leading DJ and the host of the weekly A State of Trance broadcast, which had grown into one of the most popular electronic music radio programs worldwide.[7][4] At the time, van Buuren was at a career peak, having claimed the top spot in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll for 2012.[8] To generate anticipation ahead of its May 3 release on Armada Music, van Buuren and the label shared initial track previews in early 2013, including a teaser for the lead single "This Is What It Feels Like" featuring Trevor Guthrie in March, which highlighted the album's vocal-driven and crossover appeal.[9][10] The album's cover artwork was unveiled on March 7 during another A State of Trance episode, further fueling excitement among fans.[4]Inspirations
The creation of Intense was driven by Armin van Buuren's desire to encapsulate the "intensity" of his personal and professional life, including the demands of global tours, the joys and challenges of fatherhood, and the emotional highs and lows that accompanied them.[11][12] In interviews around the album's release, van Buuren described it as a musical reflection of this "intense ride," capturing the emotional roller-coaster of his experiences, such as becoming a father to his daughter Fenna in 2011, which influenced his increased studio productivity despite fewer DJ gigs.[6][11] Van Buuren sought to evolve beyond the more unified trance sound of his previous album Mirage (2010), experimenting with a broader palette to reflect his evolving artistic vision.[11] This included blending traditional trance with emerging genres like house and dubstep, as he noted in a 2013 interview with Pete Tong, describing the album as featuring "more house-y electro stuff and of course trance, some rock influence, even a little bit of dubstep."[13] Adding emotional depth, van Buuren incorporated classical elements, inspired by composers like Bach and Beethoven, whose works he listened to for their profound impact.[14] This manifested in collaborations with violinists, such as Israeli-American artist Miri Ben-Ari on the title track, to infuse orchestral textures and heighten the album's expressive range.[6] The project spanned a three-year development period from 2010 to 2013, allowing van Buuren ample time for experimentation in the studio.[11]Recording and production
Studio work
The production of Armin van Buuren's album Intense included sessions conducted in van Buuren's personal home studio in Leiden.[15] Van Buuren adopted a hands-on approach throughout, personally producing every track while experimenting in a relaxed environment, often recording at home with the garden doors open and sipping tea to foster creativity.[16][14] Van Buuren utilized digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live and Logic Pro, along with a Universal Audio (UAD) interface, to layer electronic elements like synths and beats over organic sounds including guitars, violins, and vocals.[14] The process was iterative, with initial demos developed from ideas sparked during his 2012 tours and refined through testing in live sets across 2012 and early 2013 performances.[16] Core recording work wrapped up in late 2012, followed by final mixing in early 2013, resulting in a standard edition comprising 15 tracks.[5] Van Buuren occasionally collaborated with co-producers like Benno de Goeij on select tracks to enhance specific elements.[15]Collaborations
The album Intense features a range of collaborations with vocalists, instrumentalists, and songwriters that contribute distinct elements to individual tracks. Israeli-American violinist Miri Ben-Ari provides violin and production on the title track "Intense," introducing classical strings to the electronic framework.[15][17] American singer Trevor Guthrie delivers lead vocals on "This Is What It Feels Like," adding an anthemic pop dimension.[15] Dutch vocalist Cindy Alma contributes vocals to "Beautiful Life," infusing a soulful R&B influence.[15] Singer Laura Jansen performs vocals on "Sound of the Drums," bringing a melodic, introspective layer.[15] Australian artist Fiora (credited as Fiora Cutler) supplies vocals on "Waiting for the Night," enhancing emotional depth through her versatile delivery.[15] Co-production and songwriting efforts further shaped the album's sound. Dutch producer Benno de Goeij co-produced the title track "Intense" alongside Armin van Buuren and Miri Ben-Ari, contributing to its orchestral build-up.[17] Composer John Ewbank provided songwriting for "Sound of the Drums" and co-wrote "This Is What It Feels Like," incorporating narrative-driven structures.[15] Lyricist Paul Barry penned lyrics for vocal tracks including "Beautiful Life," emphasizing themes of aspiration and connection.[15] Van Buuren selected collaborators based on personal instinct and their potential to create organic fusions in the studio, such as Ben-Ari's classical crossover expertise to blend violin with trance elements.[7] These partnerships added instrumental and vocal layers, expanding the album from core EDM roots into pop-trance hybrids and musical fusions across its 15 tracks.[7]Musical content
Genres and style
Intense is primarily rooted in trance music, blending its euphoric core with elements of progressive house, electro house, and dubstep drops, while incorporating classical violin interludes for emotional depth.[15][18][19] The album features orchestral samples and sweeping strings that heighten dramatic peaks, drawing from broader EDM trends of 2013 such as genre fusions for festival appeal.[18][20] Stylistically, Intense marks an evolution from the more melodic trance of Armin van Buuren's previous album Mirage (2010), shifting toward aggressive, festival-ready builds with dynamic drops and breakdowns to suit larger crowds.[19] Tracks average around 5:15 in length, allowing space for extended euphoric builds via heavy synthesizer layers and vocal chops that create infectious hooks.[18][20] The album's arc begins with high-intensity openings in the title track, progresses to anthemic highs exemplified by soaring choruses and massive drops, and concludes on a more reflective note, balancing high-energy anthems with introspective moments.[18][20] This structure emphasizes van Buuren's perfectionist approach, embracing diverse genres from progressive trance to classical influences.[6]Track listing
The standard edition of Intense features 15 tracks with a total running time of 79:11.[15]
The extended edition, titled The More Intense Edition, was released on November 15, 2013, and includes the standard tracks plus additional bonus tracks and remixes, extending the total duration to approximately 165 minutes across four discs in some formats.[21]
