Early life
Kang Daniel was born Kang Eui-geon on December 10, 1996, in Busan, South Korea, as the only child in his family. He was raised by his single mother after his parents divorced, with his mother working multiple jobs to support the household amid financial difficulties. Growing up in Busan, Daniel developed an early interest in creative pursuits, including a childhood dream of becoming a movie director, which he later reflected on in interviews as influencing his storytelling approach in music.[19][20] During his middle school years, Daniel discovered his passion for dance after joining a b-boying club on a teacher's recommendation, having missed the opportunity to sign up for the reading club. He honed his skills at a local dance academy in Busan and participated in youth competitions, notably winning first place at the Busan City Kids dance event as a teenager. These experiences marked the beginning of his dedication to street dance styles like breaking, which became a cornerstone of his performance abilities.[21][22] Financial constraints posed challenges during his high school period, as the tuition for an arts-focused institution was burdensome for his mother, leading Daniel to briefly quit school to pursue his aspirations full-time. In 2014, he relocated to Seoul to train as an entertainer, marking the transition from his Busan upbringing to the competitive K-pop industry.[23][24]Education and training
Kang Daniel developed an early interest in dance during his middle school years, participating in b-boying activities and competing in local battles, where he achieved first place in a rookie b-boying competition in Busan.[21] To further his passion, he enrolled at Peniel Arts High School in 2012, majoring in modern dance with a secondary focus on ballet.[25] During his time there, he excelled in competitions, earning a gold medal in a high school dance event.[26] Financial difficulties, particularly the high tuition costs, led Daniel to drop out of Peniel Arts High School after one year in 2013.[23] He later obtained his high school equivalency through the General Educational Development (GED) certification exam following his appearance on the survival show Produce 101 Season 2 in 2017.[24] In 2018, Daniel enrolled at Kyung Hee Cyber University, where he pursued a bachelor's degree in the Department of Applied Music, completing it between 2018 and 2021 with strong academic performance, including multiple A+ grades.[27] The university recognized him as an alumnus in its official communications.[27] Prior to his entertainment debut, Daniel relocated to Seoul in 2014 to begin formal idol training, initially joining B2M Entertainment as a trainee.[21] Following the company's acquisition, he transferred to MMO Entertainment, where he continued his preparation for over two years and five months, honing skills in vocals, dance, and performance under rigorous trainee schedules typical of the K-pop industry.[24] This period culminated in his participation in Produce 101 Season 2, marking the transition from trainee to public figure.[24]Career
Pre-debut activities
Kang Daniel developed an early interest in dance during his middle school years in Busan, South Korea. In the eighth grade, a teacher recommended that he join a b-boy club to build confidence, which ignited his passion for both dancing and singing. He quickly progressed by attending the Nataraja Dance Academy in Busan, where he honed his b-boying skills. In 2011, at the age of 15, Kang participated in the youth dance battle competition "Busan City Kids Vol. 2" alongside a b-boy partner, ultimately winning the finals against notable young dancers, including future BTS member Jimin and Wanna One's Park Woojin.[28][21] To further his dance education, Kang enrolled in 2012 at Peniel International High School of the Arts in Busan, majoring in modern dance and ballet. During high school, he competed in the 49th High School Arts Festival, earning a gold medal in the modern dance category. A clip from one of his high school modern dance performances later resurfaced, showcasing his fluid and expressive style, which contrasted with his later high-energy idol choreography. These experiences solidified his ambition to become a performer.[21][29] In 2014, Kang relocated to Seoul to pursue a career as a K-pop idol, beginning his trainee period under B2M Entertainment. Following a management restructuring and acquisition, he transferred to MMO Entertainment, where he trained for approximately two years and one month. His trainee life was challenging, with limited access to proper vocal training and intense focus on dance practice; at one point, he considered fleeing to Canada due to the hardships. Despite these difficulties, Kang persisted, preparing for his breakthrough opportunity.[30][31][32]2017–2018: Produce 101 Season 2 and Wanna One
Kang Daniel participated in Mnet's survival program Produce 101 Season 2, which aired from April 7 to June 16, 2017, as a trainee from MMO Entertainment.[5] He initially ranked lower but gained significant attention for his dance skills and charismatic performances, rising to second place by the sixth episode.[33] Despite facing minor controversies, including an apology for using social media to influence concept evaluations, his popularity surged, earning him the nickname "Nation's Center" among viewers.[34][35] In the live finale on June 16, 2017, Kang Daniel secured first place with 1,578,837 votes, out of over 10 million total votes cast, becoming the center and leader of the project boy group Wanna One formed by the top 11 contestants.[5] As the group's main dancer, lead rapper, and sub-vocalist, he played a pivotal role in their formation under Swing Entertainment and CJ E&M.[36] Wanna One debuted on August 7, 2017, with the mini-album 1X1=1 (To Be One), featuring the lead single "Energetic," which topped South Korean charts and marked one of the fastest-selling K-pop debuts that year.[37][38] Throughout 2017 and 2018, Wanna One released several successful albums, with Kang Daniel prominently featured in title tracks and choreography. Their second mini-album 0X1=1 (Undeniable) arrived in December 2017, led by "Beautiful," which dominated music programs and contributed to the group's projected earnings exceeding 30 billion won for the year.[39][38] In 2018, follow-up releases included 0+1=1 (I Promise You) in March with "Boomerang," 1÷χ=1 (Undivided) in June featuring "Light," and their first full-length album 1¹¹=1 (Power of Destiny) in November, led by "Spring Breeze," all of which achieved massive commercial success and multiple music show wins.[40][41][42] Kang Daniel's contributions, including his signature dance moves like the "open cat" in "Energetic," helped solidify Wanna One's status as a leading act until their disbandment on December 31, 2018.[37]2019: Solo debut with Color on Me
Following the conclusion of Wanna One's activities in December 2018 and amid legal disputes with his former agency, Kang Daniel established his own independent label, Konnect Entertainment, in June 2019, serving as its CEO.[43] This move paved the way for his solo career, with preparations focusing on an album that emphasized self-expression and personal identity through color-themed motifs.[44] Kang Daniel actively participated in the album's production, including lyric writing and concept development, aiming to showcase his unique artistic "color." On July 25, 2019, Kang Daniel released his debut extended play (EP), Color on Me, distributed by Sony Music Korea.[45] The six-track album blends hip-hop, R&B, and pop elements, with the title track "What Are You Up To" (Korean: 뭐해) serving as its lead single—a vibrant, upbeat song encouraging listeners to embrace their true selves.[46] Other notable tracks include "Color," which inspired the album's theme, and "Horizon," highlighting his songwriting contributions.[44] The EP's packaging featured a photobook, CD, and random photocards, reflecting a colorful, youthful aesthetic aligned with its concept. Promotions began immediately after release, despite initial challenges as an independent artist, including reports of some music programs hesitating to book him due to his lack of major agency backing. Kang Daniel performed "What Are You Up To" on major shows like M Countdown, Music Bank, and Inkigayo, where he executed dynamic choreography emphasizing his dance skills.[45] He also held fan signing events and live sessions, fostering direct engagement with supporters known as Danity. In October 2019, he discussed the album's creation in a Billboard interview, crediting fans for its momentum and expressing excitement about blending genres to reflect his growth.[45] Color on Me received positive reception for its fresh sound and Kang Daniel's versatile vocals, with critics praising its role in marking a confident solo transition post-Wanna One.[46] The music video for "What Are You Up To" amassed over 10 million views within a week, contributing to its cultural buzz.[47] At the 2019 Melon Music Awards, the track won Best Music Video, recognizing its visual storytelling and production quality.[47] Commercially, the EP was a major success, debuting at No. 1 on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart and maintaining the top spot for multiple weeks.[48] It sold over 350,000 copies on its first day according to Hanteo Chart data, setting a record for a solo artist's debut at the time.[49] By the end of 2019, cumulative sales exceeded 500,000 units per Gaon figures, earning a Double Platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) for shipments over 500,000.[50] Among solo artist albums that year, it ranked seventh in total sales, underscoring its impact in the competitive K-pop market.[50] The release also propelled Kang Daniel to No. 12 on the Billboard Social 50 chart in August 2019, marking his solo entry on the ranking.[8]2020–2021: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow albums and hosting roles
In March 2020, Kang Daniel released his first mini-album Cyan through KONNECT Entertainment, marking the beginning of his "color trilogy" project inspired by the CMYK color model.[51] The EP debuted at number one on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart and achieved 261,000 first-week sales according to Hanteo Chart data, setting a record for the highest first-week sales by a male solo artist in 2020 up to that point.[52][53] The title track, "2U", an upbeat dance-pop song co-written by Kang, promoted themes of self-discovery and was performed on music programs including SBS's Inkigayo.[54] Following a period of promotional activities, Kang released his second mini-album Magenta on August 3, 2020, continuing the color-themed series with a focus on R&B influences and collaborations featuring artists such as Jamie and Simon Dominic.[55] The album topped the Gaon Album Chart upon release and sold over 282,000 copies in its first week per Hanteo Chart, contributing to Kang's growing reputation as a consistent chart-topper in the solo market.[56] The lead single, "Who U Are", an empowering anthem about embracing one's identity, was accompanied by choreography emphasizing fluid movements and was promoted alongside tracks like "Flash" and "Quit".[55] In April 2021, Kang concluded the trilogy with Yellow, his third mini-album, released on April 13 and featuring a mix of genres including hip-hop and electronic elements.[57] It debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart, marking Kang's fourth consecutive chart-topping release, and recorded 316,500 first-week sales on Hanteo Chart, earning a certification for high initial sales among solo artists.[56][58] The title track "Antidote" addressed themes of healing and resilience, with promotional activities highlighting its dynamic stage presence, while pre-release single "Paranoia" built anticipation through its intense production.[57] Parallel to his music releases, Kang expanded into hosting during this period, taking on the role of MC for Mnet's dance survival program Street Woman Fighter, which premiered in August 2021 and featured competing female dance crews.[59] His energetic and multilingual hosting style—incorporating English and Japanese—helped bridge communication between contestants and international viewers, contributing to the show's global popularity.[60] Additionally, in early 2021, he starred as the main host in the web variety series Agent Black Jack K on the UN*VERSE platform, portraying a secret agent in a 10-episode spy-themed adventure that blended comedy and action.[61] These ventures showcased Kang's versatility beyond music, solidifying his presence in entertainment broadcasting.2022–2023: The Story album, acting debut, and first solo tour
In May 2022, Kang Daniel released his first full-length studio album, The Story, marking a significant milestone in his solo career as it compiled tracks reflecting his personal growth and artistic evolution. The album, comprising 10 songs including the lead single "Upside Down," explored themes of self-reflection and resilience through a mix of upbeat pop, R&B, and electronic elements.[62] "Upside Down" debuted at number two on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart, while the album itself achieved strong commercial success, selling over 316,630 physical copies in its first week according to Hanteo Chart data.[63] Critics praised the album's diverse soundscape and cohesive narrative, with TheKMeal highlighting its "insane musical variety" and standout features from collaborators like Dbo on "Loser," though some noted the title track as relatively underwhelming compared to the deeper cuts.[64] Overall reception was positive, earning an 8.7/10 from Kpop Reviewed for its engaging blend of introspection and energy.[65] Later that year, on November 24, Kang Daniel issued a repackaged version titled The Story: Retold, adding four new tracks to expand the original storyline, with "Nirvana" featuring rappers pH-1 and We Dem Boyz serving as the new title track. This release emphasized themes of enlightenment and closure, incorporating hip-hop influences and achieving number-one positions on iTunes charts in 12 countries, including the United States and Japan.[66] The repackage maintained the album's commercial momentum, contributing to The Story's year-end ranking of 97 on the Circle Chart with approximately 149,807 units sold in South Korea.[67] Reviews commended its fresh additions, with Genius describing the project as a "solid and enjoyable listen" that solidified Kang Daniel's maturation as a songwriter and performer.[68] Parallel to his music activities, Kang Daniel made his acting debut in early 2022 with the Disney+ original series Rookie Cops, a coming-of-age romantic drama that premiered on January 26 and ran for 16 episodes until March 16. In the series, he portrayed Wi Seung-hyun, a free-spirited police academy trainee navigating challenges in relationships and career aspirations, opposite Chae Soo-bin as his co-lead.[69] The role required intensive preparation, including police training, and was well-received for showcasing his natural charisma and emotional depth, as noted in interviews where he discussed the project's focus on youth and passion.[70] Rookie Cops marked Disney+'s first Korean original drama, blending lighthearted romance with realistic depictions of law enforcement training, and garnered positive feedback for its fresh take on the genre.[71] To promote his evolving artistry, Kang Daniel embarked on his first solo concert tour, First Parade, which began with shows in Seoul on August 13 and 14, 2022, at Jangchung Arena and expanded into an international world tour across Asia, Europe, and North America. The tour featured performances of hits from The Story alongside earlier singles, emphasizing high-energy choreography and fan interactions in intimate venues. Asian legs included stops in Bangkok (November 19–20, 2022), Kuala Lumpur (January 14, 2023), and Singapore (January 21, 2023), while the European portion ran from January 26 to February 4, 2023, covering cities like Manchester, London, and Paris. The North American segment followed from March 2 to 18, 2023, with concerts in Atlanta, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, and Los Angeles, drawing enthusiastic crowds and highlighting his global appeal.[72][73] The tour concluded successfully, with reviews praising its vibrant production and Kang Daniel's stage presence as a pivotal step in establishing his solo concert legacy.[74]2024–2025: Agency dispute, Act album, world tour, and military enlistment
In early 2024, Kang Daniel became embroiled in a legal dispute with KONNECT Entertainment, the agency he founded in 2019. On May 20, 2024, he filed a criminal complaint against the company's major shareholder, identified as "A," accusing them of embezzlement and breach of trust related to a contract involving an advance payment exceeding 10 billion KRW.[75] The conflict led to the dismissal or resignation of all employees and the departure of artists under the label, culminating in the agency's closure announcement on June 10, 2024.[75] The dispute extended into a defamation lawsuit against YouTuber "A" (also known as Sojang), with the Seoul Central District Court ruling in November 2024 that the defendant must pay Kang Daniel 30 million KRW in damages plus interest. The appellate court upheld the ruling in 2025, but Sojang appealed to the Supreme Court in November 2025, with the case ongoing as of November 2025.[76] Following the agency's shutdown, Kang Daniel transitioned to his new agency ARA (Artistic Round Alliance) in July 2024. He made his musical comeback on September 23, 2024, with his fifth mini album Act, featuring five tracks led by the single "Electric Shock," a high-energy dance-pop song co-written by Kang himself.[77] The EP debuted at number eight on South Korea's Circle Album Chart and sold over 72,000 copies on its first day according to Hanteo Chart data, marking his return after a year-long hiatus amid the agency turmoil.[78] Act explored themes of self-reinvention and intensity, with production contributions from collaborators like ChaMane and Purple Wise, receiving praise for its dynamic choreography and vocal delivery.[79] To promote Act, Kang Daniel launched his second solo concert tour, titled 2024 Kang Daniel Concert 'Act', beginning with two sold-out shows at Seoul's Jangchung Arena on October 12 and 13, 2024.[80] The tour expanded internationally in 2025 as Act: New Episode, with European stops in May—including London on May 7 at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire and Paris on May 9—followed by a 12-city U.S. leg in September, starting in Charlotte on September 3.[80][81] The performances highlighted tracks from Act alongside hits from his discography, emphasizing high-production staging and fan interactions. On June 16, 2025, Kang released his sixth mini-album Glow to Haze under ARA, featuring five tracks with the title track "Episode." The EP debuted on the Circle Album Chart and continued his streak of successful releases.[82] In June 2025, Kang confirmed his mandatory military enlistment for the second half of 2025. As of November 2025, he scheduled a fan concert in December 2025 as his final event before enlisting, with no exact date announced.[18][83] In interviews, he reflected on the agency dispute's emotional toll, noting it confined him indoors for three months, but expressed determination to deliver his best work before enlisting.[84]Artistry and public image
Musical style and influences
Kang Daniel's musical style is characterized by a versatile blend of genres, primarily rooted in hip-hop and electronic dance music (EDM), with incorporations of synth-pop, R&B, and Latin elements across his discography. He has expressed a personal affinity for hip-hop, stating that it suits him best and that songs with intense concepts align well with his artistic persona. His releases often feature energetic, dance-oriented tracks that showcase his background as a skilled dancer, blending rhythmic rap verses with melodic hooks to create anthemic, performance-driven songs. For instance, his solo debut album Color on Me (2019) emphasized bright, upbeat pop with EDM influences, setting a foundation for his color-themed series that explores emotional spectrums through sound.[85][86][87] In subsequent works, Daniel has expanded his sonic palette to include more experimental and genre-fusing approaches. The EP Cyan (2020) leaned into cool-toned, introspective vibes with synth-heavy production, while Magenta (2020) introduced passionate, mid-tempo tracks blending pop and R&B. His 2022 album The Story marked a narrative-driven evolution, incorporating storytelling elements with diverse instrumentation to reflect personal growth. More recently, the title track "Episode" from Glow to Haze (2025) highlights vibrant Latin rhythms and R&B grooves, demonstrating his willingness to integrate global influences for a fresh, dynamic sound. Daniel has described his approach as open-minded, allowing him to experiment without rigid boundaries, which has enabled a progression from high-energy idol pop to more mature, self-produced compositions.[11][88][89] Daniel's influences draw from both K-pop contemporaries and international artists, particularly those pushing genre boundaries. He has cited the Italian rock band Måneskin as a significant inspiration, praising their groundbreaking style and how it has impacted his appreciation for band music and live performances. In interviews, he has also mentioned drawing motivation from rock acts like Linkin Park for their emotional intensity, though his own work remains firmly in the pop and electronic realms. Additionally, his creative process is influenced by personal experiences and visual storytelling, often tying music to thematic concepts like colors to evoke specific moods and narratives. This eclectic mix allows Daniel to craft music that resonates universally while maintaining a signature charismatic energy.[90]Impact and legacy
Kang Daniel's emergence as the "Nation's Center" during Mnet's Produce 101 Season 2 in 2017 marked a pivotal moment in K-pop, amplifying the cultural phenomenon of survival audition programs and their role in launching boy groups. His top ranking and central position in Wanna One propelled the group to unprecedented success, with their debut EP achieving first-week sales of over 411,000 copies, setting records for rookie sales, and total sales exceeding 900,000 copies, thereby influencing the industry's emphasis on fan-voted idols and temporary project groups.[91] This visibility earned him widespread recognition in South Korea, where his charisma and dance skills positioned him as a benchmark for idol versatility. Transitioning to a solo career in 2019, Kang Daniel shattered records for male solo artists, with his debut EP Color on Me achieving 466,701 copies sold in its first week—the highest first-week sales for a K-pop solo debut at the time—and surpassing 500,000 total units shortly after release. By 2020, his cumulative solo album sales exceeded 1 million copies, solidifying his status as a commercial powerhouse and demonstrating the viability of independent solo trajectories post-group disbandment. He also debuted on Billboard's Social 50 chart at No. 29, reflecting his global online buzz, and later charted on the World Digital Song Sales with tracks peaking at No. 5. These milestones, coupled with four Seoul Music Awards and a Melon Music Award, underscore his artistic consistency and market dominance.[92][93][8] Kang Daniel's legacy extends beyond music through his entrepreneurial ventures and social contributions, including founding Konnect Entertainment in 2019 to manage his career and other artists, which highlighted the growing trend of idols seeking creative autonomy amid industry disputes. His global expansion via the 2024–2025 ACT world tour, spanning Asia, Europe, and the U.S. with stops in 12 American cities, expanded K-pop's international footprint and showcased his evolution as a performer. Philanthropically, he has donated significantly to disaster relief, including ₩30 million ($26,000) to Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association for 2019 wildfire victims and ₩50 million ($41,000) in 2020 for COVID-19 aid to procure masks and sanitizers, earning praise for his commitment to public welfare. As he prepares for mandatory military enlistment in late 2025, Kang Daniel remains a symbol of resilience and multifaceted influence in K-pop. In November 2025, he announced a pre-enlistment fan concert, '2025 KANGDANIEL FAN CONCERT [RUNWAY: WALK TO DANIEL],' scheduled for December 13–14 at KBS Arena in Seoul, which sold out immediately, marking his final public appearance before enlistment.[80][94][95][84][96]Other ventures
