Sonal Jha
Sonal Jha is an Indian actress and theatre performer born on July 29 in Patna, Bihar, who has appeared in Hindi television serials and films since the mid-2000s.[1] She holds a master's degree in history from the University of Delhi and began her career with the film Return to Rajapur in 2006, later gaining recognition for supporting roles in projects addressing social issues and women's experiences.[2] Notable performances include her portrayal of a mother in the controversial film Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), which depicted female sexual desires and faced initial denial of certification by India's Central Board of Film Certification for its "lady oriented" content, and her role in the biographical drama 12th Fail (2023), based on the true story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma.[3] On television, she featured in long-running shows like Balika Vadhu, where she played a character that shifted from progressive to orthodox traits amid production decisions, prompting her later reflections on creative constraints and regressive content in Indian TV.[4] Jha has also been involved in theatre since childhood and advocates for more nuanced representations of women over 40 in media, highlighting evolving opportunities for mature actresses amid industry shifts away from stereotypical "kitchen politics" narratives.[5]
