Formation and early years (2015–2016)
Through Fire was founded in 2015 in Omaha, Nebraska, by guitarist and producer Justin McCain as a rebranding and continuation of his previous project, Emphatic, which had disbanded after a decade.[3][12] The band's initial lineup consisted of McCain on guitar and production, Grant Joshua Kendrick on lead vocals, Patrick Mussack on drums, and Jesse Saint on bass.[13][14] In late 2015, Through Fire signed with Sumerian Records, marking a pivotal step that enabled professional recording and promotion; the deal was publicly announced on January 29, 2016, alongside the debut of their single "Stronger."[15] Early promotional efforts included the release of a music video for "Stronger," which helped build anticipation for their debut album.[16] The band also embarked on their first tour in January and February 2016, supporting Adelitas Way.[17] The debut album, Breathe, was recorded with McCain handling production, guitar, keyboards, and programming, drawing from personal inspirations such as his sister's health struggles for the title track.[14][18] Released on July 1, 2016, via Sumerian Records, the album debuted at #4 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and #7 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart.[17] Key singles from Breathe included "Stronger," which peaked at #29 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and "Breathe," reaching #13 on the same chart.Breakthrough and touring (2017–2019)
In early 2017, Through Fire underwent a significant lineup change when original bassist Jesse Saint and drummer Patrick Mussack departed the group. The band quickly recruited bassist Kyle LeBlanc and drummer Grant Brooks to complete the lineup alongside vocalist Grant Joshua Kendrick and guitarist Justin McCain.[12] Building on the momentum from their debut album Breathe, the band embarked on an extensive touring schedule in 2017 and 2018, including support slots on Fozzy's "Judas Rising Tour" across 25 dates from February to April 2018, as well as appearances at festivals like Razor 94.7 Edgefest in September 2017 alongside Black Stone Cherry and 10 Years.[19][20] They also began headlining their own shows and co-headlining runs, such as the Firestorm Tour with Like A Storm in summer 2019, which showcased their growing stage presence and connection with audiences through high-energy performances blending hard rock riffs and anthemic choruses.[21] Live shows during this era were praised for their intensity, with Kendrick's powerful vocals and the rhythm section's tight groove earning enthusiastic fan responses at venues like the House of Blues in San Diego, where the band delivered aggressive sets that highlighted their evolution.[22] The touring period culminated in the release of their second studio album, All Animal, on July 19, 2019, via Sumerian Records. The album debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and No. 36 on the Independent Albums chart, reflecting the band's rising profile in the hard rock scene.[12] Key tracks included the title single "All Animal," which peaked at No. 26 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, and a cover of Roxette's "Listen to Your Heart," which also charted and received attention for its modern rock reinterpretation.[23] Earlier in the breakthrough phase, the 2017 single "Where You Lie" from the deluxe edition of Breathe reached No. 22 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart and was accompanied by a dark, narrative-driven music video directed by Steven Contreras, further boosting radio play and fan engagement during tours.[24]Lineup changes and final releases (2020–2025)
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Through Fire's activities in 2020, forcing the cancellation of live tours and a pivot to virtual promotions and online engagement to maintain fan connection.[25] Drummer Grant Brooks departed the band at the end of 2021 to join Fozzy as their new drummer.[26][27] In 2022, bassist Kyle LeBlanc briefly exited the band, leading to temporary lineup adjustments including Tyler Halverson filling in on bass; LeBlanc returned in 2023. The band also welcomed brothers Tyler Halverson on bass (later shifting to lead guitar) and Zach Halverson on drums to stabilize the roster.[28][29] Guitarist and founder Justin McCain stepped away from touring in 2023 for personal reasons, with Tyler Halverson taking over lead guitar duties.[30] The band released their final studio album, Devil's Got You Dreamin', on April 21, 2023, via Sumerian Records, featuring singles such as "Karma Kills" that highlighted their evolving hard rock sound.[31][30][32] Through Fire supported Drowning Pool on the Strike a Nerve Tour in 2023, marking one of their last major live outings alongside the Strike a Nerve Tour dates.[33] In March 2025, the band announced an indefinite hiatus to pursue personal projects, culminating in their final performance on May 17, 2025, at The Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha, Nebraska, effectively concluding the group's run.[10][34]Band members
