Vivek Goel
Vivek Goel CM OOnt is a Canadian physician, public health researcher, and academic administrator serving as the seventh president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo since November 2021.[1] He holds an MD from McGill University, an MSc in community health from the University of Toronto, an MS in biostatistics from Harvard University School of Public Health, and completed postgraduate training in community medicine at the University of Toronto.[1][2] Goel's career includes senior leadership roles at the University of Toronto, such as vice-president and provost from 2004 to 2008, vice-president of research and innovation from 2015 to 2020, and chair of the Department of Health Administration.[2] He also served as the founding president and CEO of Public Health Ontario from 2008 to 2014, where he advanced evidence-based public health practices.[1] His research contributions center on evaluating medical screening interventions, health status surveillance, decision analysis in public health policy, and consumer decision aids.[2] Among his honors, Goel was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2020 for contributions to health sciences, public health innovation, and higher education, and invested in 2024.[3] He received the Order of Ontario in 2024 and the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025, recognizing his leadership in academia and community health.[1] Goel announced in October 2024 that he will conclude his presidency in 2026 due to family circumstances, after leading initiatives such as the Waterloo at 100 vision and collaborations on Canada's COVID-19 immunity studies.[4][1]
