Welshly Arms
Welshly Arms is an American blues rock band formed in 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio.[1] Blending gritty blues-rock with influences from vintage soul, classic rock, R&B, and gospel, the band rose to international prominence with their 2017 single "Legendary", which garnered over 250 million streams and achieved platinum certification in several European countries.[1][2] Their music, characterized by powerful vocals and retro textures, has been featured in film trailers like The Hateful Eight, Netflix series such as Underground, and advertising campaigns for brands including Jeep and ESPN.[1][3] The band's debut studio album, No Place Is Home (2018), amassed over 350 million streams and solidified their sound, evolving from early EPs like Welcome (2013) and Legendary EP (2017) toward a slicker pop-infused rock style in later singles such as "Learn to Let Go" and "Trouble".[1][3] Signed to Polydor Records in 2017, Welshly Arms transitioned rapidly from local club performances to headlining major festivals including Lollapalooza and Rock am Ring.[3][1] Currently comprising Sam Getz on lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy Weaver on bass and vocals, and vocalists Bri Bryant and Jon Bryant, the band self-produces much of their work in Cleveland.[1] Their second studio album, Wasted Words & Bad Decisions, was recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown and released in subsequent years, followed by 2025 singles "Glorious" and "Shelter", continuing their trajectory of genre-blending rock anthems.[1][4]History
Formation and early releases (2013–2015)
Welshly Arms formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2013, emerging from informal Sunday afternoon jam sessions that began at a backyard cookout hosted by guitarist and vocalist Sam Getz in nearby Avon.[5] These gatherings, involving Getz, bassist Jimmy Weaver, and drummer Mikey Gould, evolved into regular basement sessions blending soul, blues, rock, and gospel elements, drawing inspiration from local acts like The Black Keys as well as broader influences such as Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding to shape their raw, energetic sound.[6][7] Keyboardist and vocalist Brett Lindemann soon joined the lineup, solidifying the initial four-piece configuration. The band's name originated from a fictional hotel featured in a recurring Will Ferrell sketch on Saturday Night Live, adding a humorous nod to their Cleveland roots.[8] The group quickly transitioned to recording, releasing their debut EP Welcome on March 26, 2013, independently through Bandcamp.[9] Produced with a gritty, unpolished edge reflective of their jam session origins, the five-track EP featured the lead single "Two Seconds Too Late," alongside "The Touch," "Your Picture," "That Voodoo," and "Run Right Out Of Here," showcasing soaring vocals and blues-infused riffs that captured their soulful rock foundation. Their first live performance followed in January 2013 at Beachland Tavern, selling out and generating early local interest through online buzz.[10][7] Building on this momentum, Welshly Arms issued their follow-up Covers EP on February 25, 2014, also self-released via Bandcamp, which reinterpreted classic tracks to highlight their interpretive style and pay homage to influences like Otis Redding.[11] The six-song collection included covers of "Hold On I'm Coming" (Sam & Dave), "Time Has Come Today" (The Chambers Brothers), "You Got It" (Roy Orbison), "Radar Love" (Golden Earring), "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" (Bobby Bland), and "Revolution" (The Beatles), blending faithful renditions with their distinctive blues-rock flair. This release amplified their presence in the Cleveland scene, fostering a dedicated local following through club performances and word-of-mouth promotion.[12] In 2015, the band expanded to a six-piece by incorporating vocalists Bri Bryant and Jon Bryant, who contributed to their self-titled debut full-length album, a 10-track effort recorded independently in Cleveland. Released on May 5, 2015, the album refined their sound with tracks like "Dirty Work" and "Leave It Alone," emphasizing powerful harmonies and guitar-driven energy rooted in their early influences. It received positive initial reception within the Cleveland music community for its authentic blues-rock vibe and gritty production, solidifying their status as a rising local act. These foundational releases paved the way for broader media placements that drew national attention.[10][13][14]Breakthrough and major releases (2016–2020)
In 2016, Welshly Arms achieved their first significant commercial breakthrough with the release of the single "Legendary" on July 11, which gradually climbed various U.S. charts, peaking at number 17 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, number 28 on Adult Top 40, number 22 on Rock Airplay, and number 39 on the Hot Rock Songs chart.[15][16][17] The track's anthemic blues-rock style, blending soulful vocals with driving guitar riffs, resonated widely and marked the band's transition from local Cleveland acts to national recognition in the alternative rock scene. This momentum led to the release of the Legendary EP on August 25, 2017, featuring the title track alongside "Who We Are," "The Only," and "Never Be The Same," which further solidified their growing profile through streaming platforms and radio play.[18] Building on this success, Welshly Arms released their second studio album, No Place Is Home, on May 25, 2018, via Position Music. Recorded in a home studio in Cleveland, Ohio, the 13-track album explores themes of displacement, identity, and the elusive concept of home, reflecting the band's experiences as touring musicians who view home as a mentality rather than a fixed location.[19][20] The tracklist includes standout songs like "All the Way Up," "Indestructible," "Sanctuary," "How High," "All For Us," "Down to the River," "Locked," "Hammer," and a re-recorded "Legendary," with the album receiving positive critical reception for its genre-blending fusion of indie rock, blues, pop, and gospel elements, earning a 4-out-of-5 rating from Louder magazine for its radio-friendly yet innovative sound.[21][22] The band's visibility expanded through strategic media placements during this period. "Legendary" served as the official theme song for WWE's 2017 TLC (Tables, Ladders & Chairs) pay-per-view event, boosting its exposure on national TV and radio campaigns.[23] The track also appeared in the 2018 film Den of Thieves as an end-credits song and was featured on the soundtrack for the mobile racing game Asphalt 9: Legends, reaching wider audiences via film and gaming platforms.[24][25] Additionally, songs from No Place Is Home gained traction in television, with "Sanctuary" used in episodes of Lucifer (season 3, episode 25) and 9-1-1 (seasons 2 and 3), enhancing their sync licensing success in sync-heavy shows. Touring intensified from 2018 onward, marking Welshly Arms' shift to international stages. They performed at major U.S. festivals like Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati and supported acts on nationwide runs, while headlining European tours that included sold-out shows in cities like London and Berlin, alongside festival appearances across the continent.[26][27][28] This period of extensive live performances, including global festival circuits, cemented their reputation in the alternative rock community beyond their Midwestern roots.[5]Recent years (2021–present)
In 2022, Welshly Arms released their Dangerous EP through Position Music, featuring five tracks including the title song "Dangerous," "Are You Lonely?," "I Will Overcome," "save me from the monster in my head," and "Stand."[29] The EP's lead single "Dangerous," accompanied by an official lyric video, explores themes of risk and emotional vulnerability through lyrics like "Feelin' dangerous... We ride or we die," reflecting a bold, introspective edge in the band's blues-rock sound.[30][31] Building on this momentum, the band issued their third studio album, Wasted Words & Bad Decisions, on April 7, 2023, via Snakefarm Records and Position Music, comprising 14 tracks clocking in at 46 minutes.[32] Recorded in an old farmhouse on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, during the lingering effects of the COVID-19 lockdown, the album was produced with a focus on raw, eclectic influences blending jazz, soul, gospel, blues, and alternative rock, resulting in smooth melodies and uplifting choruses.[1] Standout songs include the opener "World Is Watching," the emotionally charged "Are You Lonely?," and "Burn Me Alive," which highlight groovy basslines and choral vocals.[33] Critics praised its catchy, radio-friendly appeal, with Louder awarding it 3.5 out of 5 stars for tracks where guitars shine through, such as "Have It All" and the restrained closer "One More Hallelujah," while Distorted Sound noted its 13 single-ready numbers aimed at broad accessibility.[34][35] In 2025, Welshly Arms released the single "Shelter" on June 5 via Position Music, a soulful rock track offering themes of refuge and resilience that continued their anthemic style.[36] On October 24, 2025, they dropped the single "Glorious" via Position Music, marking a high-energy return with its anthemic build and soulful delivery.[37] The release was promoted through an official audio video and live performance clips, including an acoustic rendition shared shortly after, which showcased the song's versatility in stripped-down formats.[38] Initial reception highlighted fan enthusiasm on streaming platforms, with early streams emphasizing its empowering vibe as a fresh addition to the band's catalog.[1] Touring remained a cornerstone of the band's activities, with a 2024 European run including a spring headline tour across Germany—featuring stops in Wolfsburg, Brunswick, and Munich—culminating in high-profile sets at the UEFA Euro 2024 Fan Festival in Frankfurt and Munich, where they performed fan favorites like "Legendary" and "The Only."[39][40] In 2025, they embarked on a Midwest tour with dates in Chicago at Beat Kitchen on November 13, Indianapolis at HI-FI on November 14, and Covington, Kentucky, at Madison Live! on November 15, followed by a summer return to Germany.[41] The year is scheduled to close with their annual Thanksgiving concert at House of Blues Cleveland on November 28, supporting act The Vindys, solidifying their hometown roots.[42] Earlier in October 2025, the band headlined the Rock Solid Gala on October 18 at Treelawn Music Hall in Cleveland, a benefit event alongside Navasha Daya and Kid Tigrrr to support independent music venues through raffles, auctions, and live performances.[43] Amid these efforts, Welshly Arms sustained fan engagement through social media teasers, acapella snippets, and acoustic sessions, while securing media syncs such as the track "Dreamers" in Netflix's medical drama series Pulse, which premiered in April 2025 and drew listeners via its soundtrack placement.[44] These initiatives, combined with over 350 million global streams from recent releases, underscored the band's ongoing resonance with audiences.[1] Welshly Arms' music is characterized by a gritty blues-rock sound infused with elements of vintage soul, classic rock, R&B, and gospel, often featuring powerful vocals, bold guitar riffs, smooth melodies, and anthemic choruses.[2] Their style draws from the classic Cleveland rock scene, incorporating jazz, blues, and alternative rock influences to create rousing, high-energy tracks with slick production.[1] The band's influences include blues and soul legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Temptations, and Howlin' Wolf, as well as local Cleveland musicians. Additional inspirations range from punk to the British Invasion-inspired blues revival, contributing to their eclectic and genre-blending approach.[45][46]Band members
