Angerme
Angerme (アンジュルム), stylized as ANGERME, is a Japanese idol girl group formed in April 2009 as part of the Hello! Project musical collective, initially under the name S/mileage (スマイレージ).[1] Originally comprising trainees from the Hello! Pro Egg program, the group debuted in May 2010 with the single "Yume Miru 15-sai" (夢見る 15歳) and received the Japan Record Award for Best New Artist that year.[1] The name S/mileage was a portmanteau of "smile" and "age," reflecting a youthful, positive image, but it was changed to Angerme in October 2014 upon the addition of third-generation members, deriving from the French words ange (angel) and larme (tear) to symbolize sharing emotions with kindness.[1] Since its renaming, Angerme has become one of Hello! Project's prominent acts, known for its dynamic performances, catchy J-pop songs, and themes of perseverance and dreams.[1] The group has released over 30 singles and several albums, including full-length releases like Mukaichuu! (2015) and STORY (2017), often charting on the Oricon rankings and performing at major festivals such as ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL and COUNTDOWN JAPAN for multiple years.[2] Notable milestones include the 2014 name change that revitalized the group with new members and concepts, as well as expansions through auditions that have seen generations of idols join and graduate, maintaining a core of nine members as of November 2025.[2] Members engage in diverse activities beyond music, including stage plays, television appearances, modeling, and publishing, with the group's first official book Angerme-muck achieving widespread sell-outs.[1] As of November 2025, Angerme's lineup includes Ise Layla (joined 2018, leader), Hashisako Rin (joined 2019), Kawana Rin (joined 2020), Tamenaga Shion (joined 2020, sub-leader), Matsumoto Wakana (joined 2020), Hirayama Yuki (joined 2021), Shimoitani Yukiho (joined 2023), Goto Hana (joined 2023), and Nagano Momoha (joined 2025), representing various regions across Japan. The group continues to tour actively, with the ongoing "Angerme Live Tour 2025 AutumnHistory
Origins as Smileage (2009–2010)
S/mileage was formed on April 4, 2009, as an indie unit drawn from Hello! Project's trainee program, Hello Pro Egg, when producer Tsunku selected four young members—Ayaka Wada (born 1994), Yuuka Maeda (born 1994), Kanon Fukuda (born 1995), and Saki Ogawa (born 1996)—to create a new group aimed at eventual major-label success.[5] The unit's name, S/mileage (stylized to evoke "smile," "mileage," and "age"), was announced by Tsunku on May 7, 2009, emphasizing themes of accumulating smiles like mileage points while highlighting the members' youthful energy.[6] As part of Hello! Project's broader management under Up-Front Promotion, the group began activities without immediate full-time status, focusing on skill development through trainee performances.[7] The group's indie phase kicked off with their debut single, "aMa no Jaku," released exclusively at the Hello! Pro Egg concert on June 7, 2009, marking their entry into live performances alongside other trainees.[7] Follow-up indie singles, including "Asu wa Date na no ni, Ima Sugu Koe ga Kikitai!" and "Suki-chan," both released on December 2, 2009, were sold at events and helped establish their identity as a vibrant, skirt-shortening idol act within the Hello! Project ecosystem.[8] Early activities centered on small-scale live shows, such as trainee concerts at venues like Nakano Sun Plaza, where the members honed choreography and vocals while engaging fans through direct interactions.[7] On November 23, 2009, during a Hello! Pro Egg concert, Tsunku delivered a video message announcing S/mileage's path to major debut, contingent on completing a promotional challenge: collecting 10,000 photos of smiling fans by March 2010 to symbolize their "smile mileage" concept.[9] The group successfully met the goal, graduating from Hello Pro Egg on March 27, 2010, and officially joining Hello! Project as full members.[9] This paved the way for their major-label signing with Rhythm Zone (an Avex sublabel) and debut single "Yume Miru 15-sai," released on May 26, 2010, which peaked at No. 5 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart and earned them the Best New Artist Award at the 52nd Japan Record Awards later that year.[10] Throughout 2009 and early 2010, S/mileage faced typical rookie hurdles, including limited visibility and reliance on Hello! Project events to build a dedicated fanbase, often performing as openers or in joint trainee showcases that drew modest crowds of a few hundred.[11] These grassroots efforts, combined with media appearances like Oricon interviews highlighting their enthusiasm, laid the foundation for their transition into the J-pop mainstream, despite the pressures of intense training and public expectations under Tsunku's guidance.[7]Growth and challenges as Smileage (2011–2014)
In 2011, S/mileage introduced its second generation of members to bolster the group amid early instability. On August 14, during the Hello! Project 2011 SUMMER concert, five new sub-members were announced: Nakanishi Kana, Takeuchi Akari, Katsuta Rina, Tamura Meimi, and Kosuga Fuyuka. By October 16, Nakanishi, Takeuchi, Katsuta, and Tamura were promoted to full members, while Kosuga remained a sub-member but withdrew shortly after on September 9 due to health issues related to severe anemia. This expansion helped stabilize the lineup temporarily, bringing the group to six full members: Wada Ayaka, Fukuda Kanon, Nakanishi Kana, Takeuchi Akari, Katsuta Rina, and Tamura Meimi.[12][13] The period saw the release of key singles that showcased the group's evolving sound and promotional efforts. "Uchōten Love," released on August 3, 2011, served as the farewell single for graduating first-generation member Ogawa Saki and peaked at No. 5 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, with the group holding live events across Japan to promote it directly to fans. In 2012, "Choto Mate Kudasai!" followed on February 1, reaching No. 6 on the same chart; its release was supported by music video tie-ins and appearances on Hello! Project stages to build visibility. These efforts included intensive fan meet-and-greets and concert performances aimed at capturing a broader audience beyond core idol enthusiasts. S/mileage also actively participated in Hello! Project ensemble concerts, such as the 2011 WINTER and 2012 SPRING tours, where they shared stages with flagship groups like Morning Musume to gain exposure and attempt a mainstream breakthrough through collaborative sets and media tie-ups.[14][15] Despite these initiatives, S/mileage faced significant challenges, including persistently low sales and frequent lineup changes that hindered momentum. Singles like "Uchōten Love" (29,328 copies first week)[16] and "Choto Mate Kudasai!" (19,700 copies first week)[17] achieved moderate chart positions but lagged behind other Hello! Project acts and reflected limited commercial traction. The group encountered a survival crisis following the successive graduations of first-generation members Ogawa Saki on August 27, 2011, and Maeda Yuuka on December 31, 2011, which reduced the core to just two members before the second generation's integration. Kosuga Fuyuka's withdrawal further exacerbated instability, forcing reliance on sub-members and prompting internal adjustments to maintain performances. By 2013–2014, ongoing discussions about the group's direction intensified, with considerations of a hiatus to reassess strategy amid stagnant growth.[13][18] The Smileage era concluded with the double A-side single "Mystery Night! / Eighteen Emotion" on April 30, 2014, which marked their highest chart performance at No. 2 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart and signaled a push toward more mature themes. Promoted through high-energy music videos and a nationwide tour, it represented an attempt to evolve the group's image. However, persistent challenges culminated in internal deliberations on redefining the unit's identity, setting the stage for future transitions without pursuing an outright hiatus.[19]Rebranding to Angerme and initial generations (2015–2016)
In December 2014, during the final performance of S/mileage's fall tour, the group announced its rebranding to Angerme, effective for activities starting in 2015. The new name, proposed by second-generation member Kana Nakanishi, was a coined word derived from the French terms "ange" (meaning angel) and "larme" (meaning tear), symbolizing a gentle heart that sheds various tears together to convey a more mature and resilient image amid the group's prior challenges with visibility and sales. This shift aimed to reinvigorate the unit's concept, moving away from the cute, mileage-themed persona of S/mileage toward a bolder, more dynamic presence that better reflected the evolving lineup and artistic direction.[20][21] Angerme's debut single under the new name, "Taiki Bansei / Otome no Gyakushuu," was released on February 4, 2015, marking a significant turnaround in commercial performance. The track debuted at number one on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, selling 48,578 copies in its first week—a substantial increase from S/mileage's previous singles, which typically charted in the top 10 but with lower sales around 20,000 units. This success, coupled with increased media coverage on platforms like Music Natalie, highlighted the rebranding's positive reception and helped elevate the group's profile within Hello! Project. The single's themes of perseverance and youthful rebellion aligned with the fiercer image, resonating with fans and attracting new attention.[22] The rebranding coincided with the integration of new members, beginning with the third generation announced in October 2014 and officially joining in December: Mizuki Murota, Maho Aikawa, and Rikako Sasaki, all from Hello! Pro Kenshuusei. These additions debuted fully in 2015, infusing fresh energy into performances and contributing to the group's expanded nine-member lineup. Later that year, on November 11, 2015, during a release event for the twentieth single "Desugita Kui wa Utarenai / Dondengaeshi / Watashi," Moe Kamikokuryo was revealed as the sole fourth-generation member following the 2015 Angerme New Member Audition, further diversifying the group's dynamics with her addition as a high school student from Kumamoto. In 2016, Momona Kasahara joined as the fifth-generation member on July 16 during the Hello! Project 2016 SUMMER concert, a surprise promotion from the trainee program that emphasized continuity and growth. These generational shifts strengthened group cohesion, with newer members adopting leadership roles in dance and vocals alongside veterans, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that enhanced live tours like the Starting Live Tour 2015 Spring.[23][24] Key milestones in 2015 included the release of Angerme's first studio album, RinnetenshouExpansion with new generations (2017–2019)
In 2017, Angerme expanded its lineup with the addition of its sixth generation members, Kawamura Ayano and Funaki Musubu, who were announced on June 26 through a special episode of Hello! Project Station and began activities during the Hello! Project 2017 SUMMER concert tour on July 15.[9] This addition brought fresh energy to the group, coinciding with the release of their 18th single "Manner Mode / Kisokutadashiku Utsukushiku / Kimi Dake ja nai sa...friends" on June 28, which marked the debut single for the new members and peaked at #4 on the Oricon weekly singles chart. Later that year, the group's 20th single "54! / Biru no 1-goukan / Majisuka Gakuen 4 Gakuen Daisakusen," released on October 25, achieved a #5 ranking on the Oricon weekly chart, demonstrating growing commercial success.[26] The year 2018 saw further growth with the debut of the seventh generation, including Ise Layla, who joined alongside Oota Haruka on November 23 during the ANGERME Live Tour 2018 Aki "Denkousekka" at Pacifico Yokohama. This expansion helped stabilize the group amid challenges, including the graduation of third-generation member Aikawa Maho on April 15, following her hiatus due to panic disorder announced in January 2017. Angerme's 22nd single "Omoitattara Kichi da yo! / Maji Suika / Oh My Wish!," released on August 29, reached #6 on the Oricon weekly chart, reflecting improved chart performance and fan support. The group also participated prominently in Hello! Project's 20th anniversary celebrations, including the Hello! Project 2018 SUMMER and WINTER concert tours, as well as the Hello! Project Hallo! Fes 2018 in October, which highlighted their role within the collective.[27] As the period progressed into 2019, leadership transitions underscored internal development, with second-generation member Takeuchi Akari promoted to leader on June 19, with sub-leaders Nakanishi Kana and Kawamura Ayano, following Wada Ayaka's graduation. Wada, the group's original leader since 2009, graduated on June 18 at the conclusion of the ANGERME Concert Tour 2019 HaruRecent developments and transitions (2020–2025)
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted Angerme's activities in 2020, leading to the postponement or cancellation of numerous concerts and events across Hello! Project groups, including 27 tour performances and 25 live house shows scheduled through May. To mitigate the impact, the group shifted to no-audience formats for key events, such as the March 22 graduation concert of member Murota Mizuki at the Hello! Project Hinamatsuri Festival, which was streamed live despite the restrictions. Releases were also delayed, with graduations like that of Funaki Musubu postponed from June due to venue closures and health guidelines, forcing adaptations like online announcements for new members.[29][30][31] Building resilience amid these challenges, Angerme welcomed its ninth generation members—Kawana Rin, Matsumoto Wakana, and Tamenaga Shion—on November 2, 2020, announced via the group's YouTube channel; they debuted at the December 9 Funaki Musubu graduation concert at Nippon Budokan. The eighth generation member Hashisako Rin, who joined in July 2019, continued contributing actively through the early 2020s, participating in limited live streams and the group's pivot to digital engagement. Subsequent additions included the tenth generation's sole member, Hirayama Yuki, promoted from Hello Pro Kenshuusei on December 30, 2021, during the Hello! Project Year-End Party. The eleventh generation arrived in May 2023 with Shimoitani Yukiho and Goto Hana, unveiled at the Hello! Project Spring Public Ability Assessment Test and debuting at the Sayonara Nakano Sun Plaza Music Festival on June 11. Most recently, the twelfth generation's Nagano Momoha joined on August 16, 2025, announced at the Hello! Con 2025 opening concert in LaLa Arena TOKYO-BAY.[32][33][34] Parallel to these joins, several key graduations marked transitions, reflecting members' personal growth and the group's evolution. Kasahara Momona departed on November 15, 2021, at the Tokyo Dome City Hall concert "TougenkyouMembers

Former members
Angerme has experienced numerous member changes since its formation as S/mileage in 2009, with a total of 26 members across 12 generations as of November 2025, including 15 graduations and 2 resignations.[45] The group's high turnover has been attributed to the typical idol industry practice of "graduation" to allow for new talent and personal development, often citing academic pursuits, health issues, or career transitions. Former members have left lasting impacts through their contributions to the group's music, leadership roles, and public personas, with many pursuing acting, modeling, or solo endeavors post-departure. Key former members include the original S/mileage lineup, who laid the foundation for the group's energetic style. Yuuka Maeda, a first-generation member, joined in 2009 and graduated on December 31, 2011, at a fan club event, citing a desire to focus on schoolwork; she later pursued voice acting and music production.[50] Kanon Fukuda, also from the first generation, joined in 2009 and graduated on November 29, 2015, following the ANGERME First Concert Tour at Nippon Budokan, known for her charismatic performances and sub-leader role; after leaving, she transitioned to acting in dramas and stage plays.[51] Ayaka Wada, the last original member and longtime leader, joined in 2009 and graduated on June 18, 2019, during the Hello Pro Premium concert tour, having been instrumental in the rebranding to Angerme; post-graduation, she focused on solo music releases and media appearances.[52] In the Angerme era, several long-term members departed amid the group's expansion. Akari Takeuchi, who joined as a second-generation member in 2011 and served as the group's center and leader from June 19, 2019, graduated on June 21, 2023, at Yokohama Arena, noted for her dance skills and visual appeal; she has since explored calligraphy and potential acting roles.[53][47] Moe Kamikokuryo, a fifth-generation member who joined in 2015 and became leader in 2023, graduated on June 18, 2025, at the end of the 10th anniversary spring tour at Yokohama Arena, having guided the group through transitions; her farewell emphasized personal growth, with plans for solo activities undisclosed at the time.[39] Rikako Sasaki, a third-generation member from 2016, graduated on June 19, 2024, following the spring tour, recognized for her vocal strength and as a key performer in singles; she expressed interest in broader entertainment pursuits post-departure.[54] Other notable departures include Rina Katsuta (joined 2011, graduated September 25, 2019, for academic reasons, later modeling)[55] and Momona Kasahara (joined 2016, graduated November 15, 2021, at Nippon Budokan, pursuing studies). Resignations were rarer, with two cases in the early years: Fuyuka Kosuga, a sub-member, resigned in September 2011 due to health concerns shortly after joining, and another early trainee like Rika Yamagishi left in 2011 without a formal graduation for personal reasons. These exits highlight the challenges of the trainee system, contrasting with the ceremonial graduations that became standard. Post-graduation, many former members remain connected to Hello! Project through events or collaborations, contributing to the group's legacy of renewal.Membership timeline
Angerme's membership has undergone numerous changes since its inception as Smileage on April 4, 2009, with four initial members selected from Hello! Pro Egg trainees.[56] The group expanded through 12 generations, with key milestones including the rebranding to Angerme on December 17, 2014, alongside the integration of its 3rd generation, which helped stabilize the lineup at 9 members during a period of growth.[57][58] The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to postponed graduations, such as that of Funaki Musubu, contributing to temporary lineup stability amid external challenges. Overall, membership grew from 4 originals to a peak of 11 in late 2020 after the 9th generation joined, before graduations reduced it to 9 active members by November 2025. Coupling tracks across eras, such as those in 2019's 11-member formations, frequently featured experimental arrangements or member-specific solos, enhancing fan engagement.
