Buddy Valastro
Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro Jr. (born March 3, 1977) is an American baker, entrepreneur, and television personality best known for owning Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey, and starring in the TLC reality series Cake Boss.[1][2]
The fourth-generation Italian-American baker began working at the family business at age 11 alongside his father, Bartolo Valastro Sr., who had purchased the bakery in 1963.[3][4] Following his father's death from lung cancer in 1994, Valastro, then 17, assumed control of Carlo's Bakery, transforming the local institution into a national brand through innovative custom cakes and pastries.[5][6]
Valastro's television career launched with Cake Boss in 2009, which showcased the chaotic yet creative operations of his bakery and propelled him to fame for crafting elaborate, themed cakes that often required engineering precision.[1][7] The series, along with spin-offs like Next Great Baker, highlighted his expertise in specialty baking while expanding his business to multiple locations across the U.S. and internationally.[7][8]
Among his achievements, Valastro has authored New York Times best-selling cookbooks, launched product lines, and received induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2017 for elevating the baking industry and regional cuisine.[9][1] However, his public profile has included controversies, such as a 2014 arrest for driving while intoxicated in New York City and criticism over a 2012 episode of Cake Boss involving a prank perceived as transphobic toward guest Carmen Carrera.[10][11] In 2020, Valastro suffered severe hand injuries from a malfunctioning bowling pinsetter at home, requiring multiple surgeries and raising awareness about industrial accident risks.[12]
