Dreamtale
Dreamtale is a Finnish melodic power metal band formed in Tampere in 1999 by songwriter and guitarist Rami Keränen.[1] The band blends symphonic elements with powerful vocals and intricate guitar work, drawing influences from classic heavy metal and progressive styles.[1] Their debut album, Beyond Reality, was released in 2002 through Spinefarm Records, marking an early breakthrough in the Finnish metal scene.[1] Over the years, Dreamtale has released eight studio albums, including notable works like Phoenix (2008), World Changed Forever (2013), and Everlasting Flame (2022), which peaked at No. 6 on Finland's physical album chart and No. 27 overall.[1] Current lineup features vocalist Nitte Valo alongside Jarno Vitri on vocals, Keränen and Zsolt Szilagyi on guitars, Akseli Kaasalainen on keyboards, Arto Pitkänen on drums, and Mikko Hepo-oja on bass.[1] Dreamtale has toured internationally, performing in countries such as Italy, Russia, and China, and has collaborated with prominent figures in metal, including Marko Hietala, Jarkko Ahola, and Timo Tolkki.[1] As of 2024, the band announced their ninth album for 2025, previewed by the single "Battleheart."[1]History
Formation and early years
Dreamtale was founded in early 1999 by guitarist Rami Keränen in Tampere, Finland, immediately following the dissolution of his previous band, Hardware.[2] Keränen served as the primary songwriter and handled multiple roles, including guitars and vocals, in the project's initial stages.[1] The band's original lineup featured Keränen alongside early recruit Esa Orjatsalo on guitars, with additional support from session musicians to round out the ensemble.[2] This core group focused on developing a symphonic power metal sound, drawing from epic and fantastical themes.[2] In August 1999, Dreamtale self-released their debut demo, Shadow of the Frozen Sun, which was independently produced and distributed on a local scale within Finland's metal community.[3] The following year, in November 2000, they issued a second demo, Refuge from Reality, also self-produced and limited in circulation, further honing their melodic style.[4] These recordings garnered attention in regional circles, leading to early live performances that helped build buzz in Finland's burgeoning metal scene.[2] The demos' reception attracted interest from record labels, culminating in Dreamtale signing a deal with Spinefarm Records in August 2001.[5] This agreement marked the end of their independent phase and paved the way for professional production opportunities.Breakthrough albums and commercial success
Dreamtale's debut album, Beyond Reality, was released on December 2, 2002, by Spinefarm Records, marking the band's entry into the international power metal scene.[6] Featuring lead vocals by Tomi Viiltola, the album showcased the band's melodic style with contributions from guest vocalist Marco Hietala of Nightwish on tracks such as "Heart's Desire" and "Where the Rainbow Ends."[7] An earlier Japanese release in June 2002 helped establish a dedicated following in Asia, contributing to the band's growing recognition beyond Finland.[8] The follow-up album, Ocean's Heart, arrived on September 15, 2003, also through Spinefarm Records, with Viiltola handling vocals on the recording. This release introduced more pronounced symphonic elements, blending orchestral arrangements with the band's signature power metal sound, as heard in tracks like "Angel Eyes" and "Two Hundred Men."[9] Shortly after its launch, the band parted ways with Viiltola due to logistical challenges, bringing in Jarkko Ahola as the new vocalist for live performances and future material.[10] Commercial momentum built through strategic singles, notably the Japanese bonus track "Powerplay" from Ocean's Heart, which peaked at No. 9 on the Finnish singles chart upon its release.[11] Spinefarm's promotion emphasized the band's accessible melodic power metal, supporting European tours and festival appearances that expanded their audience across the continent.[1] By 2005, these efforts had solidified Dreamtale's presence in the metal press and among fans, with coverage highlighting their symphonic flair and live energy.[12]Line-up instability and revival
Following the release of Difference in February 2005, Dreamtale faced significant lineup instability as vocalist Jarkko Ahola departed shortly thereafter to focus on his primary band, Teräsbetoni.[13] Guitarist Esa Orjatsalo had already left the band in 2004 due to waning interest in the project.[14] These changes left founder Rami Keränen, who had previously handled vocals on the band's debut Beyond Reality (2002), to take on additional vocal responsibilities during the transitional period. The Difference album itself was recorded amid these shifts, featuring Ahola on lead vocals and additional guitars alongside Keränen on guitar, Akseli Kaasalainen on keyboards (joining around this time), Pasi Ristolainen on bass, and Petri Ilvespakka on drums.[15] The band entered a period of inactivity from 2006 to 2007, during which efforts to stabilize the lineup continued. Phoenix (2008) marked a revival, introducing a refreshed roster with Erkki Seppänen on lead vocals, Akseli Kaasalainen solidifying his role on keyboards since 2006, Seppo Kolehmainen on guitar, Pasi Ristolainen on bass, Arto Pitkänen on drums, and Keränen contributing guitars and backing vocals.[16] This album, released via Motive Ltd. internationally and Marquee/Avalon in Japan, emphasized Keränen's songwriting to rebuild momentum after the departures.[17] By 2011, Dreamtale shifted to the independent Finnish label The Secret Door for Epsilon, reflecting a move away from major distributor Spinefarm Records.[18] The album featured experimental elements in tracks like "Eyes Are Open," blending symphonic power metal with atmospheric keyboards, but received mixed reviews, particularly critiquing Seppänen's clean yet undistinguished vocals as a departure from prior singers' styles.[19] The lineup remained consistent with Seppänen on vocals, Keränen on guitars and backing vocals, Kolehmainen on guitars, Kaasalainen on keyboards, Petteri Sinkko on bass (replacing Ristolainen), and Pitkänen on drums.[20] The band's resilience culminated in World Changed Forever (2013), where Keränen's songwriting drove the effort despite ongoing flux, maintaining core elements of melodic power metal with contributions from the Epsilon-era lineup including Seppänen, Kaasalainen, and Pitkänen.[21] This release underscored the group's adaptation through Keränen's central role amid the mid-period challenges.[22]Recent releases and activities
In 2016, Dreamtale released their seventh studio album, Seventhian... Memories of Time, an independent double-disc effort that marked a return to the band's symphonic power metal roots with intricate keyboard arrangements and melodic orchestration.[23] The album received positive reception from fans, earning an average rating of 89% on metal review sites for its blend of new tracks and re-recorded classics, though its limited promotion as a self-released project constrained wider visibility.[23][24] In August 2019, vocalist Erkki Seppänen and guitarist Seppo Kolehmainen departed the band.[25] The lineup subsequently stabilized with the recruitment of vocalists Nitte Valo and Jarno Vitri, forming the current roster alongside Keränen and others, enabling a dual-vocal dynamic emphasizing both female and male leads in their symphonic style.[2] This configuration contributed to renewed creative output. The band had released the single "Sleeping Beauty" in June 2019, a melodic track featuring Seppänen's vocals over orchestral elements.[26][27] Dreamtale's eighth studio album, Everlasting Flame, arrived in 2022 as an independent release, featuring the stabilized lineup and tracks that highlighted their evolved sound with powerful anthems like "The Glory."[1] The album achieved commercial success, peaking at No. 6 on Finland's physical charts, reflecting strong domestic support for their symphonic metal approach.[1] Following Everlasting Flame, Dreamtale issued the single "Battleheart" in early 2024, a high-energy track hinting at material for their anticipated ninth album, though no full-length release had materialized by late 2025.[1] The band maintained activity through occasional live performances, including a set at the Yantai YOMA Music Festival in China during summer 2025 and a show in Pori, Finland, in August 2024, while Keränen shifted focus toward production duties for the group and external projects.[28][29] This period has seen limited media coverage, indicating a semi-hiatus amid preparations for future recordings.[1]Band members

Musical style and influences
Genre and sound characteristics
Dreamtale's music is classified as melodic power metal, featuring fast tempos, intricate guitar harmonies, and anthemic choruses that emphasize epic and uplifting structures.[2] The band's sound draws heavily from the speed metal traditions of Finnish predecessors, with double-bass drumming and soaring leads driving the energy.[42] A defining symphonic dimension emerges through prominent keyboards and orchestral arrangements, including choirs and string sections, which add atmospheric depth and grandeur. This approach intensified from their 2003 album Ocean's Heart onward, where synthesizers and layered keys create a cinematic backdrop to the metal core.[43][42] Keyboards often lead melodies, occasionally blending with techno or industrial edges in select tracks, evoking a Nightwish-inspired symphonic atmosphere.[42] The band's style has evolved from the raw, straightforward power metal of their early releases, such as Beyond Reality (2002), which prioritized speed and melody without extensive orchestration, to more varied and modern integrations in later works like Everlasting Flame (2022).[44][45] Productions are characteristically clean and polished, often handled at Finnvox Studios, resulting in balanced, anthemic mixes that highlight dynamic shifts.[45] Rami Keränen's guitar work serves as a sonic signature, with bright tones, shredding solos, and trilling riffs that provide melodic flair amid the rhythm section's propulsion.[12][45] Comparisons to Stratovarius are frequent due to the keyboard-driven speed metal foundation, while symphonic touches align with Nightwish; recent albums distinguish Dreamtale further through dual male-female vocals, enhancing harmonic contrasts.[42][1][46]Songwriting approach and lyrical themes
Dreamtale's songwriting is predominantly driven by founder and guitarist Rami Keränen, who has served as the band's primary composer since its inception in 1999. Keränen often crafts the core musical elements during intensive sessions, sometimes generating multiple songs in a short period, such as two tracks during a week-long break from rehearsals. This approach emphasizes melodic hooks and structured compositions suited to the power metal genre. Post-2006, following lineup changes, the process has incorporated more collaborative input on arrangements from other band members and guest artists, allowing for refined dynamics and expanded instrumentation while retaining Keränen's foundational vision.[40][1] The band's songs typically adhere to a verse-chorus structure augmented by epic bridges that build tension and release, creating narrative arcs within tracks. Central to this is the interplay between keyboards and guitars, which drives melodic progression and adds layers of symphonic depth, reflecting the genre's emphasis on harmonious instrumentation. This framework supports the band's dual-guitar and keyboard-heavy sound, enabling seamless transitions between aggressive riffs and soaring solos.[47][48] Lyrically, Dreamtale's early works center on fantasy and escapism, drawing listeners into realms of dreams, mythical quests, and oceanic symbolism as a metaphor for vast, untamed emotions and refuge from reality. For instance, albums like Beyond Reality (2002) explore dreamlands and fallen stars as escapes from worldly strife, while Ocean's Heart (2003) evokes eternal gardens, awakening beasts, and returns to the sea as purifying forces. Later material shifts toward themes of personal resilience and the passage of time, as evident in the 2016 album Seventhian... Memories of Time, where lyrics address nostalgia, life's fleeting moments, and inner strength amid adversity, including subtle critiques of societal issues like terrorism.[49][50][24] These themes are influenced by bands such as Helloween, which shaped the melodic and riff-driven songwriting. Keränen's compositional style also subtly incorporates technical edges from his production experience, enhancing the polished, layered sound. Guest collaborations have further enriched the process; notably, Marko Hietala of Nightwish provided vocals on the 2002 track "Where The Rainbow Ends" and contributed to early demos, influencing the band's vocal delivery with his powerful, emotive range during a formative period when Keränen handled lead vocals.[1][40][48]Discography
Studio albums
Dreamtale has released eight studio albums since their debut in 2002, primarily within the power metal genre, with evolving production through various labels before transitioning to independent releases. Early albums were issued by Spinefarm Records, marking the band's initial commercial push in Finland.[51] Later works reflect lineup changes and a shift toward self-production, often incorporating symphonic and progressive elements.[2] The debut album, Beyond Reality (2002, Spinefarm Records), features 10 tracks and introduced the band's melodic power metal style with guest vocals from Marco Hietala on select songs.[52] It did not chart prominently but established their sound. Ocean's Heart (2003, Spinefarm Records), with 11 tracks, marked the band's symphonic debut through orchestral arrangements and narrative elements, including a storyteller intro.[53][9] Difference (2005, Spinefarm Records) contains 10 tracks and represents a transitional phase with more introspective themes and varied song structures.[54] It did not achieve notable chart success. Following a period of inactivity, Phoenix (2008, King Foo Entertainment) arrived as a revival effort with 11 tracks, emphasizing renewed energy in the band's composition.[16] No major chart positions were recorded. Epsilon (2011, self-released via The Secret Door), featuring 9 tracks, leaned into experimental arrangements with progressive influences.[55] It reached No. 39 on the Finnish album charts.[56] World Changed Forever (2013, self-released via The Secret Door) includes 10 tracks and explores epic, thematic storytelling.[57] The album peaked at No. 41 in Finland.[58] Seventhian... Memories of Time (2016, self-released), a double-disc set with 11 core tracks plus bonuses, incorporates concept album elements across its narrative arcs.[23] It did not chart. The most recent, Everlasting Flame (2022, independent via Dreamtale Production/Supersounds), comprises 10 tracks and returned to charting at No. 27 on the Finnish album charts (No. 6 on physical).[59][58][1]| Album Title | Year | Label | Finnish Chart Peak |

Singles and EPs
Dreamtale has released several standalone singles and one EP throughout their career, primarily as promotional tools for upcoming albums or digital-only distributions in later years. These releases often featured the band's signature power metal sound with melodic hooks and symphonic elements, serving to build anticipation for full-length records. Early efforts were physical formats on labels like Spinefarm Records, while post-2010 releases shifted to digital platforms.[51] The band's debut EP, Wellon, marked their first commercial single release in 2005 under Spinefarm Records. Issued as a CD EP, it included the title track alongside additional songs and achieved moderate success, peaking at No. 9 on the Finnish singles chart (3 weeks) in 2005, largely driven by radio airplay.[60] In the mid-2000s, Dreamtale issued promo singles tied to their album Phoenix. "Payback" was released as a promotional CDr single in 2008 by Motley, featuring the title track as a lead single to preview the album's energetic style. Later that year, "Take What the Heavens Create" followed as another CDr promo single on the same label, emphasizing the band's thematic focus on triumph and resilience.[61][62][63] The 2009 single "Angel of Light," also on Motley, was Dreamtale's first digital-focused release, available as a download with B-sides "Reasons Revealed" and "Strangers' Ode." It highlighted vocalist Tommy Karevik's era and served as a bridge to their 2011 album Epsilon.[64][65] Post-2011, Dreamtale embraced fully digital singles, aligning with independent distribution. In 2013, "Join the Rain" was released digitally via Secret Door as a standalone single promoting World Changed Forever, followed by "Tides of War" later that year, both capturing the band's evolving symphonic influences.[66] The 2019 single "Sleeping Beauty," an independent digital release, returned to fairy-tale-inspired themes and featured updated lineup contributions. More recent digital singles include "The Glory" and a re-recorded "Wellon" in 2022, alongside "Battleheart" in 2024, previewing their ninth studio album. These later releases underscore the band's continued activity without a dedicated label.[67][68][1]| Title | Year | Format | Label | B-sides/Notes |
