Hellaro
Hellaro (transl. The Outburst) is a 2019 Indian Gujarati-language period drama film co-written and directed by Abhishek Shah and produced by Ashish Patel, Nirav Patel, and Aayush Patel.[1] Set in the arid Rann of Kutch region during the 1970s, the film depicts the constrained lives of women within a rigid patriarchal tribal community, where they perform grueling labor while facing severe restrictions on autonomy and expression.[2] The narrative centers on a young bride's desperate escape from domestic abuse, leading to an encounter with a group of women who embody defiance against entrenched customs.[3] Hellaro garnered critical acclaim for its evocative portrayal of gender dynamics, environmental hardships, and cultural folklore, bolstered by strong performances, particularly from debutante Shraddha Dangar, and a haunting folk soundtrack featuring songs like "Vaagyo Re Dhol."[2] It achieved commercial success in Gujarat and received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Gujarati, along with a Special Jury Award, at the 66th National Film Awards, marking a milestone for regional cinema.[4] The film's themes of female agency and rebellion against oppression resonated widely, leading to a Hindi dubbed release in 2025 to broader audiences.[5]
