Into1
INTO1 was an 11-member multinational boy group comprising performers from China, Japan, Thailand, and the United States, formed through the Tencent Video survival program Produce Camp 2021 (also known as Chuang 2021).[1][2] The group was officially announced during the show's finale on April 24, 2021, and managed by Wajijiwa Entertainment in partnership with Tencent.[2][3] INTO1 debuted with their extended play The Storm Center on July 16, 2021, featuring the lead single "Into the Fire."[4] The survival program itself garnered significant attention, accumulating 4.77 billion views and highlighting the participants' performances in group choreographies and original songs.[1] During their two-year activity period, INTO1 released four albums and pursued a development plan called "Into1's Wonderland," which emphasized music, variety shows, and cultural promotion.[5][6] The group showcased elements of Chinese culture through their work, contributing to the global visibility of C-pop idols amid a challenging entertainment landscape influenced by regulatory changes on youth-oriented programming.[6][1] INTO1 concluded their activities with the farewell album Grown Up in 2023, disbanding on April 24, 2023, upon the expiration of their project contract.[5][1]History
Pre-debut activities
Before the formation of INTO1, the members pursued diverse paths in the entertainment industry, often as trainees, actors, or performers in their home countries or China. The Produce Camp series, produced by Tencent Video, had established itself as a prominent survival show format in Chinese entertainment since 2019, where aspiring idols competed through performances, public voting, and mentorship to debut in temporary groups, building on the success of earlier seasons that launched acts like Rocket Girls 101 and THE9. This format emphasized skill development, international appeal, and fan engagement, setting the stage for Produce Camp 2021's global recruitment drive announced in August 2020 during Tencent Video's annual press conference.[7] Liu Yu, the eventual center of INTO1, had a strong foundation in performing arts, having studied Chinese dance for 16 years before entering the industry. He made his acting debut in August 2020 as Chu Qi Xian, a supporting role in the historical drama Dear Herbal Lord (亲爱的药王大人), aired on iQiyi. Later that year, on November 22, 2019, Liu Yu released his solo single "Docked" (靠岸), marking his music debut with a guofeng-inspired track that showcased his dance and vocal talents.[8]) Zhou Keyu, a Chinese-American trainee, began his career under Jaywalk Studio and debuted as a member of the boy group BEST in December 2019, performing in promotional activities and singles prior to auditioning for Produce Camp 2021. Raised in the United States before relocating to Beijing, he focused on singing and dancing training, with early exposure through group performances that highlighted his charismatic stage presence.[9] International trainee Rikimaru Chikada brought experience from Japan's idol and dance scene, where he trained as a dancer and choreographer starting in his teens, contributing to K-pop choreography for groups like iKON and PARRIS by 2017. Seeking broader opportunities, he moved to China around 2019 to join Cube Tree Entertainment as a trainee, adapting his skills to the C-pop market and auditioning for programs like Produce Camp 2021 to pursue idol activities abroad.[10]Formation through Produce Camp 2021
Produce Camp 2021, also known as Chuang 2021, was a Chinese survival reality television program broadcast on Tencent Video that served as the formation mechanism for the boy group Into1. The show featured 90 male trainees aged 17 to 28 from China, Japan, Thailand, and other countries, who competed through rigorous training, performance challenges, and global public voting to form an 11-member international boy group. Auditions for the program began with global casting calls in August 2020 and concluded in October 2020, with selected trainees entering training camps starting in November 2020. Filming commenced on January 14, 2021, ahead of the premiere.[11] The program aired over 10 episodes from February 17 to April 24, 2021, every Wednesday and Saturday, emphasizing skill development in vocals, dance, and stage presence under the guidance of mentors including Ning Jing, Lisa from Blackpink, and Amber from f(x). Early episodes focused on initial evaluations, where trainees performed solo or group pieces to establish rankings; for instance, episode 1 showcased individual auditions and mentor performances to set the tone for competition. The first major challenge in episodes 3 and 4 involved battle rounds, pitting trainees against each other in duets or groups, with winners advancing based on mentor and trainee votes. This led to the first elimination after episode 2, cutting 35 trainees and leaving 55 to proceed. Subsequent phases included theme song evaluations in episodes 5 and 6, where teams reinterpreted the show's anthem "Break Out," and position-specific assessments in later episodes, resulting in further eliminations that reduced the pool to 30 after episode 5 and 20 after episode 7. Key highlights encompassed innovative team formations, such as the high-voted "LIT" battle team featuring Rikimaru and Liu Yu, and creative performance concepts blending pop, hip-hop, and dance.[12][13][14] The competition intensified in the pre-finale episodes with master performances and survival shows, testing adaptability and teamwork amid ongoing eliminations. Episode 9 featured the third performance round, where remaining trainees competed in genre-themed groups, leading to the final 11 spots being contested through live voting. Standout moments included vocal showcases by trainees like Liu Yu, whose powerful renditions in battle and theme song stages garnered significant mentor praise and fan support, solidifying his frontrunner status. The finale on April 24, 2021, broadcast live, revealed the debut lineup based on cumulative global votes, with the top 11 announced in reverse order: 11th Liu Zhang (Caelan), 10th Zhou Keyu, 9th Patrick, 8th Zhang Jiayuan, 7th Bo Yuan, 6th Lin Mo, 5th Nine, 4th Mika, 3rd Rikimaru, 2nd Santa, and 1st Liu Yu, who earned the center position with 25,959,880 votes. Other notable rankings included Santa in second with strong dance appeal and Rikimaru in third for his all-around charisma.[15][16][14] Following the finale, the group was officially formed as Into1 under Wajijiwa Entertainment, a joint venture involving Tencent. The group was officially formed on April 24, 2021, with their music debut occurring on July 16, 2021. The name "Into1," stylized in all caps and pronounced "Into One," derives from "INT" representing "International" and "Internet" to signify global connectivity and multi-cultural promotion, "O" symbolizing the Earth and harmonious unity among members, and "1" denoting their collective oneness.[17][16]Debut and early career (2021–2022)
INTO1 was formed on April 24, 2021, comprising the top 11 trainees selected through global voting on the survival show Produce Camp 2021 under Wajijiwa Entertainment.[18] The formation performance featured the original song "Into1," marking their entry into the C-pop scene as a multinational ensemble with members from China, Japan, and Thailand. Their music debut occurred on July 16, 2021, with the release of their debut extended play, The Storm Center (风暴眼), which included the lead single "Into The Fire" and showcased their blend of pop, hip-hop, and electronic elements.[14][4] The EP's promotion included their first standalone concert, "Ready! INTO1 Ocean," held on October 16, 2021, in Shanghai, where they performed tracks from the album to an enthusiastic audience. Early chart success came with songs from the EP climbing domestic platforms, contributing to their initial visibility in the competitive Chinese music market.[19] INTO1's early career saw rapid fanbase expansion, with the official fandom name "INsider" announced on May 25, 2021, symbolizing fans as constant companions to the group.[20] As China's first multinational boy group, they garnered international attention for promoting cultural diversity in C-pop, appearing on major variety programs like Happy Camp in June 2021 to perform and engage with hosts and viewers.[14] This exposure helped solidify their rising popularity, with social media engagement surging and establishing them as a fresh force in the industry during 2021–2022.[5]Mid-career developments and challenges (2022–2023)
In 2022, INTO1 marked their first anniversary as a group with continued promotions under Tencent's Wonderland variety series, which highlighted their collaborative dynamics and behind-the-scenes activities. The group released their second EP, Into The Clouds (also known as Chong Tian Zhi), on July 12, featuring the lead single "Born To Fly" (Tian Sheng Jiu Yao Fei), which emphasized themes of ambition and breakthrough. This release built on their early successes by incorporating more mature production elements and international influences, peaking at number 18 on the Billboard China Hot Songs chart. Additionally, INTO1 contributed to the official theme song "Fighting Together" for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, promoting unity and resilience on a global stage.[6][19] The group expanded their international presence through targeted promotions, including social media campaigns and media appearances that showcased Chinese cultural elements like the Sanxingdui Ruins, gaining coverage in outlets across Thailand, Vietnam, the United States, and Japan. These efforts underscored INTO1's role in bridging C-pop with global audiences, leveraging their multinational lineup to foster cultural exchange. However, mid-career challenges emerged from the group's diverse composition, with half the members hailing from international backgrounds and lacking prior collective experience, leading to hurdles in cultural integration and communication during rehearsals and content creation.[6] In 2023, INTO1 released their third and final EP, Grown Up (Jiu Zhe Yang Zhang Da), on March 2, which explored themes of personal growth, reflection, and impending transitions through tracks like the title song "Grown Up" and "I Hate Goodbyes." The EP served as a capstone to their career, with lyrics and visuals symbolizing maturity and farewell, peaking at number 84 on the Billboard China Hot Songs chart. Accompanying promotions included their farewell concert tour, INTO1 2023 "Grown Up" Concert, held in Bangkok (April 1–2), Tokyo (April 7), and Shanghai (April 21–22), where they performed a mix of hits and new material to appreciative international crowds. These activities represented the culmination of group efforts amid the inherent limitations of project-based survival groups in the C-pop industry, where fixed two-year contracts often constrain sustained operations.[5][21]Disbandment
On April 24, 2023, INTO1 announced their official disbandment via Weibo, attributing the decision to the expiration of the group's two-year project contracts established following their formation on Produce Camp 2021.[1] The management company, Wajijiwa Entertainment, confirmed that the contracts would not be renewed, marking the end of the multinational boy band's promotional period under the survival show's framework.[19] As part of their final activities, INTO1 conducted a series of "Grown Up" concerts across Asia, with the culminating "graduation" performances held at Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena on April 21 and 22, 2023, drawing thousands of attendees and featuring performances that integrated elements of Chinese culture.[19] A farewell livestream followed on April 25, during which the members shared a collective message emphasizing personal growth and portraying the disbandment as a "new beginning" for their individual careers.[1] In the immediate aftermath, fans expressed widespread sadness on platforms like Weibo, trending topics such as "INTO1无效解散" to voice disappointment over the abrupt end, while also showing optimism and support for the members' future solo endeavors.[1] Media coverage highlighted the disbandment as emblematic of the short lifespans typical of survival show-formed groups in China, often limited to two years amid regulatory restrictions on such programs since 2021.[1]Members
