Family and childhood
Moonbin was born on January 26, 1998, in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea.[7] He grew up in a family that included his parents and a younger sister, Moon Sua, who later debuted as a member of the South Korean girl group Billlie in 2021.[8] Under the influence of his mother, Moonbin entered the entertainment world early, debuting as a child model and ulzzang—a term for an internet-famous individual known for their attractive appearance—in 2004.[9][10] During his childhood, Moonbin showed an early affinity for performing arts through these modeling opportunities, which exposed him to the industry before he could fully recall the experiences. This initial involvement highlighted his natural charisma and laid the groundwork for his later pursuits, though his family maintained a relatively private profile outside of these connections.Education and pre-debut training
Moonbin attended Hanlim Multi Art School in Seoul, where he focused on the Practical Music department, and graduated in February 2016 alongside fellow ASTRO members Cha Eun-woo and Rocky.[11][12] He joined Fantagio's trainee program during his fifth grade year, around 2008, and underwent intensive training in dance and vocals for approximately seven years leading up to his debut.[13][14] This rigorous regimen prepared him for his role as a main dancer and lead vocalist in ASTRO, emphasizing technical proficiency in performance arts. During his pre-debut training, Moonbin participated in Fantagio's iTeen project, a talent development initiative for young trainees that included photo test cuts and showcase performances to highlight emerging artists.[15] These early experiences allowed him to gain stage exposure through trainee evaluations and group demonstrations, honing his skills in a competitive environment.Career
Pre-debut activities (2006–2015)
Moonbin entered the entertainment industry at a young age, debuting as a child model and ulzzang in 2004 under the influence of his mother.[9] He gained early visibility through modeling gigs, including a commercial for Samsung during his childhood years.[16] As an ulzzang, known for his striking visuals, he built a following on early internet platforms, showcasing his photogenic appeal in various photoshoots. His first major public appearance came in 2006 at age eight, when he portrayed the "balloon boy" or mini U-Know Yunho in TVXQ's music video for "Balloons," a remake from their album "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap..[17] This role highlighted his expressive performance skills and contributed to his recognition as a promising child talent. In 2009, Moonbin made his acting debut in the popular K-drama Boys Over Flowers, playing the young version of So Yi-jung (portrayed by Kim Bum as an adult) in episodes 1 through 3.[18][19] The series, a high-rated adaptation of the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango, allowed him to demonstrate his acting range in flashback scenes depicting the character's childhood. During his trainee years at Fantagio starting around 2008, Moonbin continued with additional modeling for the agency's iTeen project in 2012 and made minor TV appearances, such as impersonating mini U-Know Yunho on SBS's Star King in 2007.[20] These activities, alongside his training, honed his performance abilities while keeping him active in the industry without a full debut.[21]Astro debut and group activities (2016–2022)

This release highlighted Moonbin's vocal range in the R&B-tinged tracks, further solidifying the duo's chemistry and allowing Moonbin to explore more intimate performance styles outside group dynamics. Their third mini-album Incense, released on January 4, 2023, included the sensual lead single "Madness" and featured Moonbin's solo track "Desire," a sultry R&B piece that captured his emotive delivery and became one of his final musical contributions before his passing.[30][31][32] Moonbin ventured into solo music with the digital single "Let's Go Ride," released on May 16, 2022, as part of ASTRO's full-group album Drive to the Starry Road under the broader E-Sensual project framework, blending pop-R&B elements with minimalistic guitar intros to accentuate his smooth vocals.
