Random Acts of Flyness
Random Acts of Flyness is an American late-night television series created, written, directed, and produced by Terence Nance that premiered on HBO on August 3, 2018.[1][2] The program consists of two seasons, with the first featuring six episodes in 2018 and the second, subtitled The Parable of the Pirate and the King, airing in December 2022.[3][4] The series employs a non-linear, stream-of-consciousness structure blending sketch comedy, vérité-style documentary segments, musical performances, surreal melodrama, and animated sequences to examine facets of contemporary American society.[5][2] It addresses themes including racial dynamics, police interactions, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships within Black communities, often through provocative and experimental vignettes that challenge conventional narrative forms.[6][7] Random Acts of Flyness garnered critical praise for its innovative format and bold content, earning a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season based on 25 reviews.[8] The show received a Peabody Award in 2018 for elevating standards in content creation through its variety-show approach reflecting fragmented modern experiences.[9] Nominations included Black Reel Awards for categories such as outstanding editing and cinematography.[10] While some sketches sparked discussion—such as those satirizing reparations technology or gender expectations among Black men—no widespread controversies emerged, aligning with its intent to provoke thought on social issues without adhering to mainstream comedic tropes.[11][12]
