History

Founding and early development

Solaris Bus & Coach originated in January 1996 when it was established as Neoplan Polska by Solange Olszewska and Krzysztof Olszewski in the small town of Bolechowo near , . The company was initially set up to produce buses under license from the German manufacturer , focusing on low-floor city buses to meet growing demand in the Polish market. On March 22, 1996, the first low-floor city bus rolled off the assembly line in Bolechowo, marking the debut of 's initial domestic production of such vehicles. In 1999, Polska introduced the , its first 12-meter low-floor city bus model, which was developed in collaboration with but began to establish the company's own design identity. This model was initially produced and sold under the Polska brand, with early deliveries going to Polish operators like those in . The Urbino 12 represented a significant step toward in , emphasizing accessibility and efficiency. By 2000, the company achieved its first export successes, delivering Urbino buses to Western European markets, including in and in the , which became Solaris's inaugural export destination. The early saw rapid growth for the company, including production expansions to handle increasing orders. In 2001, Polska transitioned to full independence from its German licensor, rebranding on to Solaris Bus & Coach Sp. z o.o. to reflect its autonomous operations and focus on proprietary designs. As part of this expansion, in 1998 the company established a facility in Środa Wielkopolska for bus body production, enhancing its capacity for bus body production and supporting the scaling of output during this formative period.

Acquisition by CAF

In July 2018, (CAF), a manufacturer, announced an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Solaris Bus & Coach S.A. from its founders, and Olszewski, for a consideration of approximately €198 million. The transaction, valued by media estimates at around €300 million based on Solaris's market position and revenues of €444 million in 2017, was driven by the founders' desire to secure the company's long-term growth after over two decades of independent operation, amid challenges in scaling production and accessing new markets without additional capital. For , the acquisition marked its strategic entry into bus manufacturing, complementing its expertise to build a comprehensive urban mobility portfolio focused on solutions. The deal was completed on September 4, 2018, with fully integrated into the Group and consolidated in its from that date, resulting in of €92 million attributed to synergies in and expansion. Although an initial allowed the Polish state investment fund Polski Fundusz Rozwoju (PFR) to acquire a 35% minority stake, this was cancelled in 2019, leaving with full 100% ownership. Following the acquisition, Solaris underwent operational restructuring within the CAF Group, retaining its Polish brand identity and management continuity while aligning with group-wide processes for , , and , including under :2018 for occupational health and safety in 2022. Initial synergies emerged in combined rail-bus production capabilities, enabling integrated transport offerings, and were supported by increased group R&D expenditure of €36.5 million in 2019 (of which €20.2 million was capitalized), with Solaris contributing to 192 projects focused on advanced driver assistance systems and energy-efficient components. Early impacts included a surge in Solaris's performance, with vehicle sales reaching a record 1,487 units in 2019 (up from 1,397 in 2017), 40% of which were alternative-propulsion models—rising from 29% in —driven by joint developments in and hydrogen technologies, such as the Urbino 12 hydrogen bus prototype tested in Bolzano, Italy. These efforts boosted bus segment revenues to €650 million in 2019 and positioned the combined entity to capture growing demand for e-mobility, with deliveries increasing 51% year-over-year to 162 units.

Global expansions and electrification shift

Following its acquisition by in 2018, Solaris Bus & Coach leveraged the group's resources to pursue broader international growth, entering new markets and intensifying its focus on sustainable . This period marked a strategic pivot toward zero-emission technologies, building on the company's earlier introduction of the full-electric bus in 2011, with accelerated development and after 2020 as global demand for low-emission surged. By 2024, 92% of Solaris's order book—comprising 1,609 vehicles valued at over €1.4 billion—consisted of low- or zero-emission models, reflecting the company's dominant position in Europe's e-bus sector. A key milestone in global expansion came in December 2024, when Solaris secured its first North American contract with King County Metro, the primary transit operator serving Seattle and surrounding areas in Washington state. Signed on December 23, 2024, the deal covers four zero-emission electric buses—two 40-foot and two 60-foot models—with an option for up to 12 more, slated for delivery in the second half of 2026. These vehicles utilize an electric-native platform tailored for the U.S. market, incorporating compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility features, advanced battery systems, and connectivity adaptations to support local infrastructure and operations; production will involve modifications for North American assembly standards to facilitate scalability. This entry aligns with Solaris's 2026 Strategic Plan, announced in mid-2023, which prioritizes zero-emission offerings for the region. In November 2025, Solaris secured additional US contracts, including six more electric buses for King County Metro via exercised options and three 40-foot and three 60-foot models for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), further advancing its North American presence. The company also strengthened its footprint in and the during this timeframe, alongside continued European diversification. Notable examples include a 2021 contract for 161 Urbino 12 buses to the Wallonia Transport Operator (OTW) in , valued at over €76 million, which expanded low-emission services in cities like , , and starting in 2022. In the , Solaris maintained and grew its presence through longstanding partnerships, such as with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), building on earlier deliveries to support regional urban transit needs. These efforts contributed to overall sales growth, with Solaris delivering a record 1,525 vehicles in 2024—a 4.7% increase from 2023—generating €927 million in revenue, up 13%. Momentum carried into 2025, with a 20% revenue rise in the first half, and at Busworld 2025 in October, the company showcased detailed North American expansion strategies, including further ZEB adaptations and market entry timelines.
