Ilir Meta
Ilir Meta (born 24 March 1969) is an Albanian politician who served as the seventh President of the Republic of Albania from 24 July 2017 to 24 July 2022.[1] Born in Skrapar, he graduated in political economy from the University of Tirana in 1992 and entered politics during Albania's post-communist transition, rising through the ranks of the Socialist Party before founding the Socialist Movement for Integration in 2004.[2] His career spans multiple high offices, including Prime Minister from 1999 to 2002, Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2002–2003 and 2009–2010, Deputy Prime Minister, and Speaker of Parliament from 2013 to 2017.[1][3]
Meta's tenure as president emphasized Albania's NATO membership and EU integration aspirations, though it was overshadowed by political tensions, including parliamentary accusations of partisanship during the 2021 elections and failed impeachment attempts.[4] After leaving office, he led the opposition Freedom Party, formed from a split in his prior movement, amid ongoing instability in Albanian politics.[5] In October 2024, Meta was arrested on charges of corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, and concealing assets, reflecting persistent allegations of influence peddling that have trailed his three-decade career despite lacking prior convictions.[6][7] These developments occur against a backdrop of polarized governance in Albania, where opposition figures often face judicial scrutiny potentially influenced by ruling party dynamics.[8]
