Key techniques in array processing often rely on the narrowband assumption, where the signal bandwidth is small relative to the carrier frequency, allowing phase differences across sensors to approximate time delays for parameter estimation.[1] Beamforming stands out as a core method, where weights are applied to sensor outputs to steer sensitivity toward desired directions or null interference, using approaches like delay-and-sum for conventional processing or adaptive algorithms such as least mean squares (LMS) and recursive least squares (RLS) for optimal performance.[1] Subspace-based methods, including multiple signal classification (MUSIC), further enhance DOA estimation by decomposing the signal covariance matrix into signal and noise subspaces.[2]
Applications of array processing span radar and sonar systems for target detection and tracking, wireless communications for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enhancement, and audio processing for speech enhancement and source localization.[1] In radar, it enables high-resolution imaging and beam steering; in seismology, it aids in event localization; and in biomedical engineering, it supports medical ultrasound imaging.[2] Advances continue to address challenges like wideband signals, coherent sources, and array imperfections through robust adaptive filtering and calibration techniques.[3]

Array processing is a subfield of signal processing that utilizes an array of spatially separated sensors, such as antennas, hydrophones, or microphones, to capture signals propagating as waves in a medium.[2] These sensors enable the estimation of key signal parameters, including direction of arrival (DOA), signal strength, and source location, by exploiting the spatial relationships among the received signals.[1] This approach contrasts with single-sensor processing by incorporating multidimensional data from the array's geometry to achieve enhanced performance in signal analysis and enhancement.[2]
At its core, array processing leverages spatial diversity—the variation in signal reception across sensors due to their positions—to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), resolve multiple simultaneous sources, and suppress interference from unwanted directions.[2] Fundamental assumptions include far-field conditions where sources are distant relative to the array size, narrowband signals whose bandwidth is much smaller than the carrier frequency, and plane wave propagation approximating the wavefronts as flat.[1] These principles allow for techniques like beamforming, where sensor outputs are weighted and combined to steer sensitivity toward desired signals while nulling interferers, thereby providing robustness against environmental noise and multipath effects.[2]
The field originated in the mid-20th century amid advancements in radar and sonar technologies following World War II, when researchers sought to overcome limitations of mechanical scanning in detecting fast-moving targets.[4] Post-war efforts in the 1950s focused on electronic phasing to enable rapid beam steering, with institutions like Lincoln Laboratory initiating systematic studies in 1958.[4] A key milestone came in the 1960s with the introduction of digital beamforming, which used digital signal processing to compute adaptive weights, marking a shift from analog to computationally flexible methods and enabling applications in military surveillance and beyond.[5]
Prerequisites for array processing include understanding wave propagation models, where plane waves model far-field scenarios with parallel wavefronts for simplified analysis, while spherical waves describe near-field effects with curvature from point sources, though the former is typically assumed for initial designs.[1]
General Signal Model
In array signal processing, the standard narrowband model describes the signals received at an array of sensors as a superposition of contributions from multiple sources plus additive noise.[1] For a uniform linear array (ULA) with M sensors, the received signal vector at time t is expressed as

Applications
Traditional Applications
Array processing has been integral to radar systems since the mid-20th century, enabling direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for target localization in both active transmit/receive and passive listening modes. In active radar, phased array antennas use beamforming to direct pulses toward potential targets and receive echoes, while DOA estimation algorithms like the MUSIC method, developed in the late 1970s, resolve multiple targets by analyzing spatial covariance matrices. Interference cancellation is achieved through null steering, where adaptive weights create spatial nulls toward jammers, a technique pioneered in military radars during the 1970s. A seminal example is the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar, first prototyped in 1973 and operationally deployed in 1983 aboard U.S. Navy Aegis cruisers, capable of tracking over 100 air and surface targets simultaneously for air defense.[7][8][9]
In sonar applications, array processing similarly supports underwater target detection and localization, with hydrophone arrays employing DOA estimation in passive modes to triangulate submarine positions via time-difference-of-arrival measurements, and active sonar using beamforming for echo ranging. Early implementations in the 1960s and 1970s, such as those in naval surveillance systems, relied on delay-and-sum beamforming to enhance signal-to-noise ratios against ocean noise and multipath reverberation. Null steering techniques were adapted for sonar to suppress interference from marine mammals or shipping noise, improving detection in cluttered environments. These methods formed the basis of systems like the U.S. Navy's SURTASS towed array, operational in the early 1980s for long-range passive surveillance.[10]
In seismology, seismic arrays have utilized array processing since the 1960s to detect and localize earthquake events and other seismic sources. Techniques such as beamforming and slowness estimation on arrays of seismometers improve signal detection amid noise and enable precise determination of event locations through analysis of wave propagation directions and velocities. Large-aperture arrays like the Large Aperture Seismic Array (LASA), operational from 1963 to 1976, demonstrated these methods for monitoring nuclear tests and natural earthquakes, achieving resolutions for epicenter locations within tens of kilometers.[11]
Traditional wireless communications in the 1990s utilized array processing for beamforming to mitigate multipath fading in cellular systems, particularly in second-generation (2G) networks like GSM. Smart antenna prototypes, deployed in base stations around 1995, employed switched beamforming or adaptive arrays to direct signals toward users, increasing capacity by sectoring coverage and reducing interference. For instance, digital beamforming experiments in the PCS band (1850–1990 MHz) demonstrated up to 3–4 times capacity gains in urban environments by nulling co-channel interferers. These early systems laid groundwork for spatial multiplexing, though limited by analog hardware constraints.[12][13]
In medical imaging, ultrasound arrays have employed beamforming since the 1970s for echocardiography, where linear or phased arrays of 32–128 elements focus transmit and receive beams to image cardiac structures in real-time. Delay-and-sum processing aligns echoes from tissue layers, enabling B-mode imaging with resolutions down to 0.5 mm at depths of 10–15 cm. Phased array transducers, introduced in the 1980s for sector scanning, improved visualization of heart valves and chambers by electronically steering beams without mechanical movement, reducing artifacts in transthoracic views. Similar principles extended to photoacoustic tomography by the 1990s, using arrays to reconstruct vascular images from laser-induced acoustic waves.[14][15]
Microphone arrays in hearing aids, developed in the 1980s and refined through the 1990s, apply delay-and-sum processing for speech enhancement in noisy environments. Dual-microphone configurations, spaced 5–10 cm apart, delay signals to align direct speech paths while attenuating diffuse noise, improving signal-to-noise ratios by 5–10 dB in reverberant settings like restaurants. Clinical studies from the mid-1990s showed these arrays enhanced speech intelligibility for hearing-impaired users by 20–30% in competing noise scenarios compared to single-microphone aids. Superdirective variants, though sensitive to microphone mismatches, were explored for compact behind-the-ear devices.[16][17][18]
In astronomy, early correlation arrays for radio interferometry, operational since the 1960s, used array processing to synthesize high-resolution images of celestial sources. The Very Large Array (VLA), completed in 1980, consists of 27 dish antennas whose signals are cross-correlated to measure visibilities, enabling angular resolutions of arcseconds via aperture synthesis. Delay compensation and fringe tracking in the correlator align phases for sources across the sky, suppressing atmospheric and instrumental noise. These techniques, rooted in foundational work by Martin Ryle in the 1950s, improved resolution by factors of 100–1000 over single dishes for mapping radio galaxies and pulsars.[19][20]
Modern Applications
In fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond, array processing plays a pivotal role through massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which employ hundreds of antennas to enable spatial multiplexing and precise beam tracking for enhanced capacity and coverage.[21] These techniques allow simultaneous transmission to multiple users by exploiting spatial degrees of freedom, while beam tracking dynamically adjusts beams to follow user movement in high-mobility scenarios. To manage the hardware complexity of fully digital architectures with such large arrays, hybrid analog-digital beamforming has emerged as a standard approach, combining analog phase shifters for coarse beam steering with digital processing for fine-grained multiplexing, thereby reducing the number of required radio-frequency chains.[22] The 5G New Radio (NR) standard, as defined in 3GPP Release 15 from 2018 onward, mandates array processing techniques like beam management for millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands to overcome severe path loss and enable gigabit-per-second data rates.[23]
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has further advanced array processing by enabling robust direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in challenging conditions. Deep learning models, such as neural networks trained on raw array sensor data, outperform traditional methods in handling non-stationary noise and multipath interference by learning complex spatial patterns directly from data.[24] For instance, attention-based deep networks can focus on relevant signal components amid varying noise profiles, improving estimation accuracy in dynamic environments.[25] Additionally, reinforcement learning has been incorporated for adaptive array configurations, where agents optimize beamforming parameters in real-time to maximize signal-to-interference ratios under uncertainty, such as in terahertz communications.[26] Recent studies from 2023 demonstrate that AI-enhanced DOA methods can boost resolution and reliability in cluttered settings, with performance gains of up to 25% in mean angular error compared to conventional subspace techniques.[27]
Array processing finds innovative applications in emerging domains, particularly autonomous vehicles, where radar and LiDAR arrays facilitate high-resolution obstacle detection and environmental mapping. In these systems, phased-array radars use beamforming to scan surroundings for velocity and range estimation, enabling safe navigation in urban clutter, while LiDAR arrays generate point clouds for 3D perception with sub-centimeter accuracy.[28] In biomedical contexts, electroencephalogram (EEG) arrays integrated with ML algorithms power brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) by processing multi-channel signals to decode neural intents for applications like prosthetic control. These setups leverage convolutional neural networks to classify brain activity patterns, achieving real-time responsiveness with minimal latency.[29]
Despite these advances, modern array processing faces significant computational demands due to high-dimensional data from large-scale antennas and real-time requirements. Edge AI processing mitigates this by deploying lightweight models directly on devices, such as base stations or sensors, to perform inference locally and reduce latency, thereby supporting scalable deployment in resource-constrained 5G and beyond networks.[30]
Array Configurations
A uniform linear array (ULA) consists of multiple identical sensors equally spaced along a straight line, with typical inter-element spacing set to d = \lambda / 2, where \lambda is the signal wavelength, to prevent the occurrence of grating lobes. This configuration forms the simplest and most fundamental geometry in array processing, enabling the processing of signals arriving from different directions through phase differences across the elements. The array's response remains consistent regardless of rotation around its axis, facilitating straightforward implementation in one-dimensional scenarios.[31][32]
ULAs offer several advantages, including simpler calibration procedures due to their symmetric structure and the ability to achieve unambiguous direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in the broadside direction, where signals arrive perpendicular to the array axis. This geometry is widely adopted in basic implementations for its computational efficiency and ease of analysis, underpinning many introductory array processing applications in fields like radar and sonar. For instance, the ULA supports effective beam steering by applying progressive phase shifts to the elements, which narrows the half-power beamwidth (HPBW) proportionally to the inverse of the number of elements, enhancing signal resolution.[31][33][32]
Despite these benefits, ULAs have notable limitations, particularly in handling signals from endfire directions (along the array axis), where ambiguities arise due to spatial aliasing. The endfire ambiguity condition occurs when d \sin \theta / \lambda > 0.5, leading to grating lobes that can mimic true signals and degrade estimation accuracy. Additionally, ULAs perform poorly in two-dimensional or three-dimensional scenarios, as their linear arrangement provides limited angular coverage and resolution outside the plane perpendicular to the array.[34][35]
A representative example of ULA application is the Bartlett beamformer, a conventional method that computes the array output power as a function of steering direction to enhance desired signals while suppressing interferers. In this implementation, the beamformer forms nulls toward interferer directions by maximizing the response in the signal-of-interest direction; for a ULA with N elements, the output power at angle [\theta](/page/Theta) is given by P(\theta) = \mathbf{a}^H(\theta) \mathbf{R} \mathbf{a}(\theta) / N, where \mathbf{a}(\theta) is the steering vector and \mathbf{R} is the sample covariance matrix, effectively nulling interferers through spatial filtering when the array is steered appropriately. This approach is particularly effective for ULAs in environments with a few dominant interferers, as demonstrated in early adaptive array studies.[36]
Planar and Circular Arrays
Planar arrays extend array processing capabilities to two-dimensional geometries, such as uniform rectangular arrays (URAs) in rectangular grids or uniform triangular arrays in triangular lattices, which facilitate joint estimation of azimuth and elevation angles in direction-of-arrival (DOA) analysis.[37] In a URA, the steering vector generalizes from one-dimensional forms to \mathbf{a}(\theta, \phi), where \theta denotes the azimuth angle and \phi the elevation angle, capturing the phase shifts across the planar elements due to incoming signals from arbitrary directions in three-dimensional space.[37] This configuration leverages the separability of the array manifold into orthogonal subspaces, enabling efficient algorithms like 2-D unitary ESPRIT for closed-form angle estimation without exhaustive spectral searches.[38]
Circular arrays, exemplified by the uniform circular array (UCA), arrange elements symmetrically around a circle to achieve omnidirectional coverage spanning 360 degrees without directional ambiguities inherent in linear setups.[39] The UCA's rotationally invariant response ensures consistent beam patterns and estimation performance regardless of the array's orientation, a property arising from its symmetric geometry that maintains uniform beampatterns during azimuthal scanning.[39] This invariance supports robust 2-D DOA estimation via eigenstructure methods, such as those exploiting phase mode excitations for azimuthal and elevational resolution.[40]
Compared to uniform linear arrays, planar and circular configurations offer superior wide-angle scanning for applications requiring full hemispheric or azimuthal monitoring, such as smart antennas in wireless systems and sonar buoys for underwater surveillance.[39] In modern deployments, UCAs integrated into 5G base stations since around 2018 enhance user tracking by providing seamless beam steering across wide sectors, as demonstrated in cylindrical array variants that extend circular principles for millimeter-wave operations. Recent advances as of 2025 include extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) configurations that extend planar and circular designs for 6G applications, enhancing coverage in dynamic environments.[41][33] Non-uniform extensions, including coprime circular arrays, further increase the effective degrees of freedom by exploiting sparse placements that enlarge the virtual aperture while preserving omnidirectional properties.[42]
A key challenge in planar and circular arrays is mutual coupling between closely spaced elements, which distorts the steering vectors and degrades estimation accuracy, particularly in dense configurations.[43] Mitigation strategies often employ sparse array designs, such as sparse UCAs, to reduce coupling effects by increasing inter-element spacing, thereby improving DOA resolution and array gain without proportional increases in hardware complexity.[43]
Estimation Techniques
Spectral-Based Methods
Spectral-based methods in array processing encompass non-parametric techniques that estimate the spatial spectrum from the array covariance matrix to detect peaks corresponding to signal directions of arrival (DOAs). These approaches scan the spectrum, often defined as P(\theta) = \mathbf{a}^H(\theta) \mathbf{R}_x^{-1} \mathbf{a}(\theta) or variants thereof, where \mathbf{a}(\theta) is the steering vector for direction \theta and \mathbf{R}_x is the data covariance matrix, to identify signal locations without assuming a specific signal model beyond stationarity.[44] They provide a straightforward framework for direction finding by exploiting the array's spatial filtering properties, contrasting with parametric methods that fit explicit models to the data.[44]
The conventional beamformer, also known as the Bartlett method, computes the spatial spectrum as P_{BF}(\theta) = \mathbf{a}^H(\theta) \mathbf{R}_x \mathbf{a}(\theta), which essentially applies a delay-and-sum operation across the array elements weighted by the steering vector. This technique, dating back to early applications in radar during World War II, offers simplicity and low computational cost, making it suitable for real-time implementations.[45] However, its resolution is inherently limited by the array's beamwidth, typically on the order of \lambda / (N d) radians for an N-element uniform linear array with element spacing d and wavelength \lambda, rendering it sensitive to correlated sources where sidelobes can mask nearby signals.[45]
Subspace-based methods enhance resolution through eigen-decomposition of the covariance matrix \mathbf{R}_x = \mathbf{U}_s \Lambda_s \mathbf{U}_s^H + \mathbf{U}_n \Lambda_n \mathbf{U}_n^H, separating the signal subspace \mathbf{U}_s from the noise subspace \mathbf{U}_n. The MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm, a prominent example, constructs the pseudospectrum P_{MUSIC}(\theta) = 1 / \mathbf{a}^H(\theta) \mathbf{U}_n \mathbf{U}_n^H \mathbf{a}(\theta), exploiting the orthogonality between the steering vector and the noise subspace to achieve super-resolution beyond the conventional beamwidth.[46] Introduced in seminal work on high-resolution estimation, MUSIC demonstrates superior performance in distinguishing closely spaced uncorrelated sources, with peaks sharpening as the number of snapshots increases.[46]
In terms of performance, spectral methods like conventional beamforming are robust to white noise, achieving reliable DOA estimates when signal-to-noise ratios exceed 10 dB and sources are separated by at least the array beamwidth.[45] Subspace techniques such as MUSIC extend this to resolutions approaching the Cramér-Rao bound for uncorrelated signals, often resolving angles as close as 2-5 degrees for arrays with 8-16 elements under moderate noise conditions.[44] Nonetheless, both classes degrade with coherent signals, where the signal subspace rank collapses, leading to resolution loss unless preprocessing like spatial smoothing is applied; conventional methods are particularly vulnerable to correlated interference.[44]
Parametric-Based Methods
Parametric-based methods in array processing rely on a structured signal model where the received data is expressed as \mathbf{X} = \mathbf{A}(\theta) \mathbf{S} + \mathbf{N}, with \mathbf{A}(\theta) the steering matrix parameterized by directions-of-arrival (DOAs) \theta = \{\theta_k\}_{k=1}^K, \mathbf{S} the signal amplitudes, and \mathbf{N} the noise; estimation involves jointly optimizing the parameters \{\theta_k, s_k\} to minimize a model mismatch error, achieving higher resolution than non-parametric approaches by exploiting prior knowledge of the signal structure.[47]
The stochastic maximum likelihood (SML) approach models both signals and noise as random processes, maximizing the likelihood of the observed covariance matrix \hat{\mathbf{R}}_x under the assumed model \mathbf{R}_x(\theta) = \mathbf{A}(\theta) \mathbf{P} \mathbf{A}^H(\theta) + \sigma^2 \mathbf{I}, where \mathbf{P} is the signal covariance; this leads to minimizing the cost function J(\theta) = \ln \det \mathbf{R}_x(\theta) + \tr\left(\mathbf{R}_x^{-1}(\theta) \hat{\mathbf{R}}_x\right), typically solved via iterative alternating optimization over \theta and \mathbf{P}.[48][47] SML accounts for signal statistics and noise correlations, providing asymptotically efficient estimates that approach the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) under sufficient snapshots.[48]
In contrast, the deterministic maximum likelihood (DML) method treats incident signals as deterministic unknowns, focusing on minimizing the Frobenius norm of the residual error in the data model, yielding the cost function J(\theta) = \left\| \mathbf{X} - \mathbf{A}(\theta) \mathbf{S} \right\|_F^2, where the optimal \mathbf{S} is obtained via least-squares projection \mathbf{S} = (\mathbf{A}^H(\theta) \mathbf{A}(\theta))^{-1} \mathbf{A}^H(\theta) \mathbf{X}.[48][47] This simplifies to a focused search over \theta, making DML computationally lighter than SML for scenarios with known signal waveforms, though it assumes uncorrelated sources for optimality.[49]
Both SML and DML offer asymptotic efficiency and superior handling of correlated sources compared to spectral methods, attaining the CRB at lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and resolving closely spaced DOAs with higher accuracy; however, their high computational cost—due to multidimensional searches and matrix inversions—necessitates iterative refinement techniques like the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm, which sequentially updates subsets of parameters to accelerate convergence.[48][50] Simulations from early analyses demonstrate that SML and DML outperform spectral methods by approximately 5-10 dB in SNR threshold for resolving sources separated by less than the array's beamwidth.[48][51]
Interference Mitigation
Spatial Filtering Techniques
Spatial filtering techniques in array processing involve applying weights to sensor outputs to suppress unwanted interferers while preserving signals of interest, often leveraging knowledge of interferer directions or noise statistics. These methods are fundamental for applications requiring high directional selectivity, such as radar and communications, where interferers can degrade performance by overwhelming the desired signal. The general framework for optimal spatial filtering uses linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamforming, which minimizes output variance subject to constraints ensuring unity gain toward the desired direction and nulls in interferer directions.[52]
One core approach is orthogonal projection to null interferers, where the received signal vector \mathbf{x}(t) is projected onto the subspace orthogonal to the interferer steering vector \mathbf{a}_i corresponding to direction \theta_i. The projection matrix is given by \mathbf{P}_\perp = \mathbf{I} - \mathbf{a}_i \mathbf{a}_i^H / \|\mathbf{a}_i\|^2, and the filtered output is \mathbf{y}(t) = \mathbf{P}_\perp \mathbf{x}(t), effectively removing the interferer component without affecting signals orthogonal to it. This technique is particularly effective when the interferer direction is known, often estimated via direction-of-arrival (DOA) methods.[53]
Spatial whitening addresses scenarios with colored noise by pre-whitening the data using the noise covariance matrix \mathbf{R}_n, transforming the input as \mathbf{R}_n^{-1/2} \mathbf{x}(t) to equalize the power of interferers and noise across spatial dimensions before subsequent beamforming. This step decorrelates the noise, improving the robustness of downstream processing like minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformers.[54]
