Light the Torch
Light the Torch is an American metalcore band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2012 originally as Devil You Know, which rebranded to its current name in 2017 following legal disputes involving former members.[1][2][3] The band emerged as a supergroup, drawing from prominent figures in the metal scene: vocalist Howard Jones, best known for his tenure with Killswitch Engage from 2002 to 2012; guitarist Francesco Artusato, formerly of All Shall Perish; and initial drummer John Sankey of Devolved.[2][4] After the name change, the core lineup solidified with bassist Ryan Wombacher (ex-Bleeding Through) joining, while drummers have included Mike Sciulara, Kyle Baltus, and currently touring/session member Alex Rüdinger.[5][1] Signed to Nuclear Blast Records, Light the Torch has toured extensively with acts such as Trivium, In Flames, and Killswitch Engage, building a reputation for melodic yet aggressive metalcore anthems that blend clean and screamed vocals with heavy riffs.[5] Under the Light the Torch name, the band has released two studio albums: the debut Revival in 2018, which charted at No. 4 on the Billboard US Independent Albums chart and No. 10 on the Hard Rock Albums chart, and the follow-up You Will Be the Death of Me in 2021, featuring 12 tracks including the SiriusXM Octane-favored single "The Safety of Disbelief."[5] Earlier works as Devil You Know include The Beauty of Destruction (2013) and They Bleed Red (2015), both released via Nuclear Blast, showcasing the band's evolution toward themes of resilience and introspection.[1] With over 370,000 monthly listeners on Spotify as of late 2025, Light the Torch continues to influence the metalcore genre through its high-energy performances and emotionally charged songwriting.[6]History
Devil You Know era (2012–2017)
Devil You Know was formed in Los Angeles in 2012 as a metalcore supergroup by guitarist Francesco Artusato (ex-All Shall Perish), drummer John Sankey (ex-Devolved), and vocalist Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage), who joined the project in late 2012 after Artusato and Sankey sought to explore a less extreme sound beyond their prior bands.[7][8][9] The band signed with Nuclear Blast Records in October 2013 and released their debut album, The Beauty of Destruction, on April 29, 2014, in North America, produced by Logan Mader.[10][11][12] Standout tracks included "A New Beginning," which served as the album's opener, and "Seven Years Alone," noted for its emotional intensity.[13] In June 2014, Devil You Know won the Best New Band award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, recognizing their rapid rise in the metal scene.[14] Early tours supported the album, including a North American run with Lacuna Coil in late 2014 and opening slots for Black Label Society and Down in 2015.[15][16] The group's second album, They Bleed Red, arrived on November 6, 2015, via Nuclear Blast, produced by Josh Wilbur and emphasizing a heavier, more direct sound amid themes of personal grief and resilience.[17] Tours continued to build momentum, with the band performing at festivals and supporting acts in the U.S. and Europe. However, internal challenges emerged in 2016 when co-founder John Sankey departed in June due to personal commitments in Australia, including his focus on the Legion music festival, creating temporary lineup instability.[18] This exit escalated into legal disputes over the band name involving former members, ultimately prompting a rebranding by the remaining core lineup.[19][20]Rebranding to Light the Torch (2017–2019)
In 2017, the band formerly known as Devil You Know faced significant legal challenges over the use of their name, stemming from disputes with former drummer John Sankey, who had registered the trademark without the knowledge of vocalist Howard Jones and guitarist Francesco Artusato. Sankey, who had departed the group in 2016, claimed co-ownership of the name due to his role in its formation, leading to threats of litigation that prevented the band from continuing under the Devil You Know moniker. To resolve the issue and move forward, Jones and Artusato opted to rebrand entirely, officially announcing the change to Light the Torch on July 28, 2017, via social media, emphasizing a fresh start while affirming their intent to perform prior material live where legally possible.[21][20] Following the rebrand, Light the Torch assembled a new lineup to solidify their core sound. Bassist Ryan Wombacher, formerly of Bleeding Through, joined the group, bringing his experience from over a decade in the metalcore scene to replace the previous rhythm section. Drummer Mike Sciulara, known for his work with Extinction A.D., was recruited in early 2018, providing a powerful and dynamic presence that aligned with the band's evolving intensity; he had previously filled in on drums for Unearth during tours. This configuration—Jones on vocals, Artusato on guitar, Wombacher on bass, and Sciulara on drums—marked the first stable quartet under the new name, allowing the band to focus on new material amid the transition.[22][23] The rebranded group began teasing their debut output in late 2017, building anticipation through interviews and studio updates that highlighted a renewed creative energy. In February 2018, they released their first single, "Die Alone," accompanied by a music video that showcased Jones's soaring vocals and the band's melodic metalcore style, signaling a shift toward more anthemic, resilient themes. This track served as the lead-in to their full-length album Revival, announced shortly after and released on March 30, 2018, via Nuclear Blast Records. Produced by Josh Gilbert (known for his work with Wovenwar and As I Lay Dying), the album was recorded at Sparrow Sound in Burbank, California, with drums tracked at ES Audio Recording Studios; it explored motifs of perseverance and rebirth, reflecting the band's real-life struggles with lineup changes and legal hurdles. Standout tracks included "The Safety of Disbelief," with introspective lyrics, and "Calm Before the Storm," which featured gang vocals and driving riffs to capture a sense of impending triumph.[23][24][25] To promote Revival, Light the Torch embarked on an extensive touring schedule in 2018, including their debut headline shows such as the first performance at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on July 9, and a co-headlining U.S. tour with Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton. The band also made several festival appearances throughout the year, delivering high-energy sets that blended tracks from Revival with select Devil You Know material, helping to establish their presence in the metalcore landscape. By 2019, the lineup saw its first change under the Light the Torch banner when drummer Mike Sciulara departed due to scheduling conflicts with his commitments to Extinction A.D. and other projects, leaving the band to seek a replacement as they began work on new music.[26]Recent releases and developments (2020–present)
In early 2020, Light the Torch faced significant disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the postponement of planned tours and delayed promotional activities for their upcoming material.[27] The band, featuring drummer Kyle Baltus (formerly of 36 Crazyfists) who had joined in late 2019, shifted focus to recording their second studio album amid these challenges.[28] The album, titled You Will Be the Death of Me, was announced in April 2021 and released on June 25, 2021, through Nuclear Blast Records.[29] Produced by Josh Gilbert and the band at Sparrow Sound in Glendale, California, it explored themes of personal growth, resilience, and moving forward from adversity, as articulated by vocalist Howard Jones in interviews.[30] Singles such as "Become the Martyr" highlighted these introspective lyrics alongside the band's signature melodic metalcore sound.[31] Baltus departed the band in 2021 shortly after the album's completion, prompting the recruitment of Alex Rüdinger (ex-Whitechapel and The Haarp Machine) as his replacement in late 2021.[32] Rüdinger contributed to live performances and helped stabilize the lineup, with core members Jones, guitarist Francesco Artusato, and bassist Ryan Wombacher remaining consistent. Post-release touring resumed in 2022, including support slots on the rescheduled Atonement Tour headlined by Killswitch Engage, alongside August Burns Red, which had originally been planned for 2020 before pandemic-related cancellations.[33] The band continued live activity in subsequent years, though plans for a 2022 fall tour with GWAR, Nekrogoblikon, and Crobot were ultimately abandoned due to logistical issues like transportation challenges.[34] By 2024, Light the Torch emphasized live shows and side endeavors, including Jones's collaborative project Burn Eternal with Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, whose debut album was mixed that year but not yet released.[35] As of November 2025, no new studio album announcements have been made, with the band prioritizing performances and individual pursuits amid ongoing lineup continuity. In 2025, vocalist Howard Jones began recording his debut solo album, produced by Josh Gilbert and Joseph McQueen. The Burn Eternal project album remains unreleased.[36][37]Musical style and influences
Musical style
Light the Torch is classified as a melodic metalcore band, incorporating elements of progressive and alternative metal through intricate song structures and atmospheric textures. Their sound features a blend of aggressive breakdowns and soaring, anthemic choruses, often driven by heavy riffing and dynamic shifts between intensity and melody.[38][39][40] Vocalist Howard Jones delivers a versatile performance, alternating between clean, melodic singing in expansive choruses and harsh, guttural screams during verses and breakdowns, creating emotional contrast that has evolved from more raw aggression in early material to polished, hook-driven anthems in recent works. Guitarist Francesco Artusato contributes technical prowess with djent-inspired, down-tuned riffs on seven- and eight-string guitars, complemented by palm-muted chugs, ambient leads, and non-indulgent solos that add progressive depth without overshadowing the core metalcore aggression.[41][42][43][44] The band's production has shifted from a raw, heavy aesthetic in their Devil You Know era—marked by intense barrages and thrashing guitars under producers like Logan Mader—to a more streamlined and accessible polish post-rebrand, emphasizing balanced mixes that highlight vocals and rhythms, as handled by Josh Gilbert on later releases. This evolution includes subtle electronic synth programming and orchestral elements for added emotional layering, particularly in tracks like "Die Alone" and "The Safety of Disbelief," which showcase radio-friendly structures while preserving metalcore's breakdown-driven intensity.[12][25][45][42][43]Influences
Light the Torch's music draws from the diverse backgrounds of its members, blending melodic metalcore with technical and extreme metal elements rooted in their prior projects. Vocalist Howard Jones, formerly of Killswitch Engage, brings influences from melodic metalcore pioneers, emphasizing crossover appeal through anthemic choruses and emotional depth. He has cited Poison the Well as pivotal in shaping the genre's impact, noting their role in enabling metalcore's broader reach.[46] Additionally, Jones's listening habits include groove-oriented acts like Pantera and Faith No More, alongside hardcore staples such as Earth Crisis and Integrity, which inform the band's rhythmic drive and intensity.[47] Guitarist Francesco Artusato contributes progressive and technical influences from his time in All Shall Perish, where he honed complex riffing and death metal structures. This background shifted toward groovier, melodic compositions in Light the Torch, prioritizing accessible songwriting over extreme technicality.[48] Artusato's creative process also integrates synesthetic elements, perceiving music in colors, which influences both his guitar work and visual art tied to the band's aesthetic.[49] Former drummer John Sankey added brutality from his extreme metal roots in Devolved, drawing inspiration from Fear Factory's mechanical precision and drummer Raymond Herrera's style to infuse the band's early rhythms with industrial heaviness.[50] As a supergroup, Light the Torch incorporates heavier elements from members' past bands, including Bleeding Through's aggressive hardcore via bassist Ryan Wombacher, creating a collective sound that balances melody and aggression.[51] Thematically, the band's lyrics on resilience stem from personal struggles, such as Jones's experiences with life's hardships shaping introspective content.[47] Artusato's 2019 car accident, resulting in severe back injuries, depression, and recovery through therapy, further inspired themes of escape and perseverance, with music serving as a vital outlet during isolation.[49]Band members
Current members
The current lineup of Light the Torch, as of 2025, consists of the core trio that has provided stability since the band's rebranding: Howard Jones on lead vocals, Francesco Artusato on lead and rhythm guitars, and Ryan Wombacher on bass and backing vocals.[5] Howard Jones has been the lead vocalist since the project's inception as Devil You Know in 2012, where he quickly became a central figure in shaping the band's melodic metalcore direction.[52] As a former frontman of Killswitch Engage, Jones contributes emotionally charged lyrics and melodies drawn from personal experiences, solidifying his role as a key creative force.[53] Francesco Artusato has served as lead and rhythm guitarist since co-founding Devil You Know in 2012 alongside drummer John Sankey, bringing his technical prowess honed in All Shall Perish through complex riffs and solos.[52] Artusato also handles much of the band's production, ensuring a polished sound that blends aggression with accessibility, and is recognized as the primary songwriter.[54] Ryan Wombacher joined on bass in late 2013 as part of Devil You Know, integrating seamlessly into the core unit with his heavy, groove-oriented style from his time in Bleeding Through.[55] His addition helped solidify the trio's chemistry, contributing to the band's live energy during tours such as the 2022 run supporting Killswitch Engage.[56]Former members
Light the Torch, originally formed as Devil You Know in 2012, has undergone several lineup changes, particularly in its rhythm section, reflecting the challenges of maintaining stability in a supergroup featuring high-profile musicians from the metalcore scene. The band's early iteration included drummer John Sankey, who served from 2012 to 2016 and contributed to their debut album The Beauty of Destruction (2014). Sankey, previously known for his work with Devolved and Divine Heresy, departed in June 2016 to focus on organizing the Legion Music Festival, a project he co-founded to support up-and-coming heavy music acts. His exit also sparked legal disputes over the band's name rights, ultimately leading to the rebranding to Light the Torch in 2017, as the remaining members sought to sever ties and move forward independently.[18][57][58] Rhythm guitarist Roy Lev-Ari joined Devil You Know in late 2013, ahead of the band's first full-length release, and remained until 2015. A veteran of projects like Hiss of Atrocities and Omicide, Lev-Ari provided additional guitar depth during the recording and touring for The Beauty of Destruction. His departure occurred amid the band's preparations for new material, though specific reasons were not publicly detailed; Francesco Artusato subsequently handled rhythm guitar duties alongside his lead role.[59][60] In the post-rebranding era, Light the Torch cycled through multiple drummers. Mike Sciulara, formerly of Unearth and Extinction A.D., joined in early 2018 and performed on the album Revival, marking the band's Nuclear Blast debut. Sciulara, often credited as Mike "Scuzz" Sciulara, left in 2019 after supporting the album's promotion, with the band continuing live performances using session players during the transition.[61] Kyle Baltus succeeded Sciulara, drumming for Light the Torch from 2019 to 2020 primarily for live performances. Known from his tenure with 36 Crazyfists and Periphery, Baltus departed prior to the recording of the band's second album to pursue other opportunities, including session work and family priorities.[62][32] Alex Rüdinger, formerly of Whitechapel, served as the session and touring drummer in 2021, performing on the album You Will Be the Death of Me.[29] Prior to the permanent addition of bassist Ryan Wombacher in 2013, the band relied on Francesco Artusato to handle bass duties during initial writing and touring phases from 2012 to 2013, underscoring the project's evolution from a core duo of Artusato and vocalist Howard Jones. Light the Torch, formerly known as Devil You Know, has released four studio albums through Nuclear Blast Records, evolving from melodic metalcore roots to a more hard rock-infused sound post-rebranding.[5] The band's discography reflects lineup changes, particularly in the rhythm section, while maintaining the core creative partnership of vocalist Howard Jones and guitarist Francesco Artusato. The Beauty of Destruction (April 29, 2014) marked the debut full-length release under the Devil You Know moniker, featuring 12 tracks produced by Logan Mader at Studio Sonora Recorders in California.[63] The album's production emphasized clean, aggressive tones with orchestral elements, capturing the supergroup's initial intensity. The lineup included Howard Jones on vocals, Francesco Artusato on guitars, John Sankey on drums, and Mike Combs on bass.[12] It debuted at No. 50 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 6,800 copies in its first week.[12]| No. | Title | Length |
