Phang survived the Marchioness disaster on 20 August 1989, a collision between the pleasure boat Marchioness—on which he had organized a party for his 26th birthday—and the dredger Bowbelle on the River Thames, which killed 51 people, including nearly all of his close friends attending the event.^[23] This tragedy triggered intense survivor's guilt, manifesting in self-blame for inviting others aboard and persistent questions about why he lived while others perished, compounded by flashbacks and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms that disrupted his daily life for years.^[5]^[19] To cope, Phang initially suppressed these emotions while advancing his career in food writing and television, but the guilt intensified around anniversaries, leading to isolation and a sense of universal blame from survivors and acquaintances alike.^[6] In 2009, marking the 20th anniversary, he confronted the trauma head-on by producing the BBC documentary The Marchioness: A Survivor's Story, in which he reconnected with fellow survivors to share experiences and challenge his internalized narrative of fault, ultimately fostering a process of mutual absolution.^[4] This therapeutic reconnection, as Phang described, diminished the "bigger and bigger" weight of guilt he had carried, allowing him to articulate that external perceptions of blame were projections rather than realities.^[19] Phang's resilience emerged through sustained professional output and advocacy, channeling personal loss into public contributions like his ambassadorship for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, informed by the deaths of his sister Kimberley and friend Jane from the disease, which paralleled his earlier grief management strategies.^[71] By 2015, reflecting in interviews, he credited the disaster with reshaping his outlook toward cherishing relationships and pursuing creative endeavors, such as gourmet travel series and photography, as mechanisms for psychological rebuilding rather than avoidance.^[72] This approach underscores a pattern of transforming survivor's guilt into proactive empathy, evidenced by his ongoing engagements that prioritize communal healing over solitary rumination.^[23]
