SkyCity Auckland
SkyCity Auckland is an integrated casino and entertainment complex situated in the central business district of Auckland, New Zealand, and operated by the publicly listed SkyCity Entertainment Group Limited. Opened in 1996, it comprises New Zealand's largest casino facility, the 328-metre Sky Tower offering observation decks and adventure activities, multiple four- and five-star hotels, the SkyCity Theatre, numerous restaurants and bars, and conference spaces including the New Zealand International Convention Centre.[1][2][3] At its launch, the complex featured 1,200 electronic gaming machines and 100 table games, along with high-end dining and VIP areas, establishing it as the country's premier gaming venue. The adjacent Sky Tower, completed in 1997, has drawn over one million visitors annually, contributing significantly to Auckland's tourism economy, with the overall site welcoming more than 100 million guests by 2021.[2][2] SkyCity Auckland has faced notable regulatory challenges, including a five-day casino closure in 2024 for failing to intervene with a problem gambler who lost over $1 million between 2017 and 2021, and penalties totaling $4.16 million for breaches of anti-money laundering obligations. These incidents highlight ongoing scrutiny over compliance with harm minimization and financial crime prevention standards in the New Zealand gambling sector.[4][5][6]
