Tectonic processes generate accessory faults through brittle deformation, where subsidiary shears develop to distribute stress along plate boundaries or during orogenic compression.[103] Magmatic origins drive accessory dike emplacement, as small batches of melt exploit existing fractures or weaknesses adjacent to larger intrusions, often during the waning stages of pluton assembly.[105] Hydrothermal accessory structures, such as veins in ore deposits, form when hot, metal-laden fluids infiltrate fractures under elevated pressure and temperature, leading to mineral precipitation as fluids cool or react with host rocks.[106]These features hold significant value in resource exploration, particularly as indicators of hidden mineralization; for instance, accessory faults often serve as conduits or traps for ore fluids, signaling potential economic deposits in surrounding areas.[107] In the Sierra Nevada batholith, accessory dikes and faults are prevalent within granodioritic plutons, where they intersect schlieren zones and contribute to the localization of gold-bearing quartz veins, aiding in the mapping of historic mining districts.[108] Such structures frequently contain accessory minerals like apatite or zircon, which provide insights into the host rock's composition without dominating it.[109]Advances in research since the 2010s have integrated geographic information systems (GIS) with 3D modeling techniques to visualize and analyze accessory structures, enabling precise reconstruction of subsurface geometries for better prediction of fault-related hazards and mineral prospects.[110] This approach has been particularly effective in complex terranes, where layered GIS data overlays reveal spatial relationships between minor dikes, veins, and faults that traditional 2D mapping overlooks.[111]
