Gears 5
Gears 5 is a third-person shooter video game developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios.[1] Released on September 10, 2019, for Xbox One and Windows, with an enhanced version for Xbox Series X|S launching on November 10, 2020, it serves as the fifth main entry in the Gears of War franchise and a direct sequel to Gears of War 4.[2] The game emphasizes cover-based combat against alien hordes, featuring a single-player campaign, cooperative multiplayer, competitive versus modes, and the Horde survival mode.[3] The story centers on protagonist Kait Diaz, who leads her squad—Del Walker, JD Fenix, and the robot companion Jack—across vast, explorable environments to unravel the origins of the Locust Horde and the emerging Swarm threat, while confronting personal visions and family secrets tied to her heritage.[3] Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity struggles against subterranean enemies, the narrative shifts focus from previous entries' Marcus Fenix to Kait's journey, incorporating emotional depth through character backstories and moral choices that influence relationships.[4] New gameplay elements include semi-open world traversal with vehicles like skiffs and climbing tools, customizable robot abilities for Jack, and dynamic weather affecting combat.[5] Gears 5 was critically acclaimed for its stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4, improved storytelling, and robust multiplayer suite, achieving a Metacritic score of 84 for the Xbox One version and 85 on OpenCritic.[6] Available on Xbox Game Pass from launch, it attracted over three million players in its first week and was nominated for several awards, including Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2019, highlighting its technical achievements and evolution of the series' formula.[7]Gameplay
Campaign
The campaign of Gears 5 is a single-player experience structured across three acts that follow protagonist Kait Diaz on a personal quest across the planet Sera, blending intense combat with exploration elements.[8] Core third-person shooter mechanics remain faithful to the series' roots, emphasizing cover-based combat where players slide into waist-high barriers for protection while engaging enemies in close-quarters firefights.[9] Signature features include the chainsaw-equipped Lancer assault rifle for brutal melee executions and the active reload system, which rewards precise timing during weapon reloads with increased damage, accuracy, and a brief slow-motion effect for follow-up shots.[8] These systems encourage tactical positioning and aggressive pushes, with encounters designed to allow player-initiated ambushes rather than scripted defenses.[9] Acts 2 and 3 introduce open-world elements that expand beyond linear corridors, offering expansive environments up to 50 times larger than traditional Gears levels, promoting freedom in approach.[8] Players navigate these areas via skiff traversal across vast deserts and water bodies, enabling dynamic vehicle-based combat and scouting.[8] Climbing mechanics allow scaling sheer cliffs and structures for elevated vantage points, while environmental puzzles—such as manipulating machinery or redirecting energy flows—integrate seamlessly with combat, requiring resourcefulness to progress or uncover optional paths.[8] Act 1 maintains a more directed, corridor-style layout to build tension, transitioning into these broader spaces for a sense of scale and discovery.[9] A key innovation is the robot companion Jack, a hovering drone that assists Kait throughout the campaign with a suite of abilities unlocked and upgraded via collectible components from side activities.[10] Jack's scanning ability reveals hidden enemies, weak points, and collectibles through walls, providing strategic intel during stealth or combat phases.[10] Offensive options include EMP bursts to stun and disable groups of foes, as well as drone deployment for remote reconnaissance or targeted distractions.[8] Upgrades enhance these skills—such as extending EMP range or adding healing bursts—progressing through a skill tree that encourages exploration for components, adding RPG-like depth to the companion system.[10] Cooperative play enhances the campaign with split-screen and online options supporting up to three players, where additional participants control JD Fenix or Del Walker alongside Kait.[9] Drop-in mechanics allow friends to join mid-mission seamlessly, adjusting difficulty dynamically to maintain challenge without disrupting progress.[11] The main story typically spans 10-15 hours on standard difficulty, with completionists extending playtime through optional objectives and collectibles in the open sections.[12]Multiplayer
Gears 5's Versus mode serves as the core of its competitive multiplayer, supporting formats such as 1v1 for duels, 2v2 for small-team skirmishes, and the standard 5v5 for full squad battles. Key game types include Team Deathmatch, where opposing teams race to eliminate a predetermined number of enemies; King of the Hill, in which players capture and defend a roaming objective ring to accumulate points; and Escalation, a hybrid mode that rewards ring control with access to increasingly powerful weapons. These modes build on the series' cover-shooting fundamentals, adapted for replayable PvP encounters, while briefly referencing AI opponents similar to those in cooperative play for balanced matchmaking when lobbies are incomplete.[13][14][15] Character classes enhance PvP customization through skill cards, offering roles like the Mechanic for defensive engineering and turret support, the Soldier for aggressive frontline assaults, the Marksman for precision sniping, and the Support for team sustain via healing and buffs. Players equip up to five skill cards per class to modify abilities, such as boosting reload speeds or adding explosive effects, allowing for diverse loadouts that fit individual or team strategies in Versus matches. This system promotes role-based teamwork without rigid restrictions, evolving from traditional Gears progression.[16][17] Bootcamp serves as a dedicated training area where players can practice against bots on various maps and modes, ideal for honing aim, movement, and tactics in a low-stakes setting. Bots simulate human opponents with adjustable difficulty, enabling solo sessions or filling incomplete lobbies to maintain match flow. Cross-play integrates Xbox and PC players seamlessly, expanding the community, while skill-based matchmaking via Microsoft's TrueMatch algorithm pairs competitors by performance metrics like win rates and kill/death ratios to ensure fair games.[18][19][20] Versus maps emphasize verticality with multi-tiered structures for flanking routes and elevated sniping positions, alongside destructible elements like breakable cover and explosive barrels that reshape the arena mid-match. Examples include Conditional Probability, a compact urban site with stacked buildings for close-quarters chaos, and Fissure, a cavernous area featuring chasms and collapsing platforms to force adaptive positioning. These designs integrate environmental hazards and objective variety, heightening tactical depth in PvP.[21][22]Horde and Escape modes
Horde mode in Gears 5 is a cooperative PvE experience for up to five players, who must survive 50 waves of escalating enemy assaults on fortified positions across various maps.[23] Players collect power from defeated foes to upgrade characters, construct and reinforce defensive structures like barriers and turrets, and leverage class synergies—such as the Mechanic's fabrication bonuses or the Tactician's team buffs—to manage resource allocation and combat efficiency.[2] Ultimate abilities, unique to each character like JD Fenix's airstrike or Del Walker's anchor strike, provide pivotal advantages during boss encounters and high-threat waves, emphasizing strategic timing and coordination.[23] Escape mode, a launch feature distinct from Horde's static defense, challenges three-player squads in aggressive, time-sensitive runs through hand-crafted hive environments, where a trailing venom flood propels players toward extraction points while pursuers close in.[24] Teams scavenge for weapons and components in safe rooms between segments, adapting traversal tools like Kait Diaz's hoverboard for quick navigation and evasion, with failure resulting in mission restart to heighten tension.[24] The mode supports local and online co-op, focusing on momentum and risk assessment rather than prolonged sieges. Both modes integrate global leaderboards to track high scores and completion times, alongside daily challenges that offer Iron currency rewards for unlocks, encouraging repeated play and skill progression.[25] The companion robot Jack serves as a playable class in co-op scenarios, deploying abilities such as enemy stunning, shield generation, and resource recovery to support team survival without direct combat engagement.[23] Enemies in these modes draw from a diverse roster, including Swarm variants like Trackers and Pouncers with exploitable weaknesses to fire or explosives, alongside DeeBee robotic units vulnerable to EMP disruptions, promoting tactical loadout choices and environmental awareness.[2]Story
Plot
Gears 5 is set on the planet Sera several months after the events of Gears of War 4, where the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) battles the hive-minded Swarm, evolved from the Locust Horde's remnants.[26] The story focuses on Kait Diaz, a Gear soldier plagued by visions linking her to the Swarm, as she seeks to uncover her personal connection to the enemy.[4] In Act 1, Delta Squad—comprising Kait, JD Fenix, Del Walker, and Marcus Fenix—is reinstated in the COG and sent to the ruins of Azura to recover a prototype Hammer of Dawn orbital weapon under Damon Baird's orders. The mission succeeds, but during a Swarm attack on nearby Settlement 2, JD defies direct orders from First Minister Mina Jinn and uses the Hammer to protect civilians, causing a malfunction that kills squadmate Lizzie Carmine. JD is arrested for insubordination, while Kait, disturbed by her visions, deserts the COG with Del to investigate her ties to the Swarm.[4] Act 2 follows Kait and Del to an Outsider settlement in a massive Riftworm skeleton, where they seek allies against the Swarm. A sudden attack leads to Kait's capture and deeper visions of Swarm control. After village chief Oscar Diaz—Kait's uncle—is killed, surviving Outsiders join them. The pair then travels to the abandoned New Hope Research Facility, discovering audio logs from scientist Niles Samson revealing the Locust Horde's origins: COG experiments on Imulsion-mutated children, including Kait's grandmother, Queen Myrrah, who led the Locust rebellion. Kait learns of her own latent Hivemind connection, positioning her as a potential vessel for Swarm leadership.[4] In Act 3, Kait and Del reach the icy Mount Kadar, locating the preserved body of Myrrah's Matriarch—a Hivemind conduit. An AI version of Niles explains further: Myrrah's daughter, Reyna (Kait's mother), inherited the Hivemind link and was captured by the Swarm, transforming her into its new Queen to replace the deceased Myrrah.[4] Act 4 takes the group to the Vasgar desert, where they enlist nomadic warrior Garron Paduk to activate additional Hammer of Dawn satellites for a counterstrike. They battle through Swarm hives and evade a massive Kraken creature, gathering the necessary components amid revelations about the Swarm's rapid evolution from Locust remains.[4] The story culminates in Act 5 with the Swarm's full-scale invasion of COG capital New Ephyra. Kait confronts Queen Reyna, who attempts to sway her daughter to join the Swarm through their shared bloodline. Rejecting the offer, Kait faces a critical choice: rescue JD (who has escaped imprisonment to aid the fight) or Del from Imulsion pods controlled by Reyna. One companion dies, while the other survives to fight on. The robot Jack sacrifices itself to target the Kraken with the Hammer of Dawn, repelling the immediate threat. Reyna escapes, affirming the Swarm's persistence and Kait's central role in the ongoing war. The narrative explores themes of identity, legacy, and the cycle of conflict, establishing Kait as the series' new lead while leaving humanity vulnerable to future assaults.[4][27]Characters
Kait Diaz serves as the primary protagonist in Gears 5, shifting the narrative focus from previous entries to explore her personal journey as a former Outsider with deep ties to the Swarm threat. Born and raised outside the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) jurisdiction in her mother's isolated village, Kait grapples with haunting visions that connect her to her heritage and the antagonist Queen Reyna, driving much of the campaign's emotional core. Voiced by Laura Bailey, her character arc emphasizes themes of identity and family legacy, evolving from a supporting role in Gears of War 4 to a determined leader confronting her past.[2][28] James Dominic "JD" Fenix, son of Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud, co-leads the early narrative alongside Kait but faces internal conflict stemming from his desertion of the COG after events in the prior game. His strained relationship with his father highlights generational tensions within the Fenix family, as JD seeks redemption while questioning the COG's authority. Voiced by Liam McIntyre, JD's development explores themes of regret and loyalty, providing a foil to Kait's more instinctive drive.[29][28] Delmont "Del" Walker acts as the loyal companion to both Kait and JD, offering comic relief through his optimistic demeanor while revealing deeper layers of resilience forged from his outsider background. As a steadfast friend, Del supports the group during key exploratory segments, his unwavering support underscoring bonds of brotherhood amid the Swarm invasion. Voiced by Eugene Byrd, Del's role adds emotional balance, blending humor with poignant moments of vulnerability.[29][28] Marcus Fenix returns as a grizzled veteran COG soldier and mentor figure, bridging the series' legacy with the new generation through his protective yet gruff interactions, particularly with his son JD. Having survived the Locust War and its aftermath, Marcus provides tactical expertise and paternal guidance, his presence reinforcing the enduring fight against emerging threats. Voiced by John DiMaggio, Marcus embodies the franchise's rugged heroism while confronting personal losses.[2][28] Queen Reyna emerges as the central antagonist, revealed as Kait's mother and the transformed leader of the Swarm, whose personal history intertwines with Kait's visions and Outsider roots, creating a tragic familial conflict at the story's heart. Formerly the leader of Kait's village, Reyna's evolution into the Swarm Queen propels the invasion's motivations, blending maternal bonds with monstrous authority. Voiced by Justina Machado, her character deepens the narrative's exploration of inheritance and corruption.[29][28] Supporting characters include Fahz Chutani, a cynical COG sergeant with antagonistic tendencies toward the protagonists, voiced by Rahul Kohli, who aids in military operations but harbors distrust; Garron Paduk, the grizzled UIR veteran from earlier games, providing survival expertise in harsh environments, voiced by Chris Cox; and Jack, the non-human robotic companion upgraded for reconnaissance and support, exhibiting a quirky personality through holographic interactions, voiced by Adam G. Levine. These figures enhance the ensemble dynamics without overshadowing the core cast.[30][28]Development
Pre-production
Gears 5 entered pre-production following the release of Gears of War 4 in 2016, with The Coalition beginning early conceptualization under studio head Rod Fergusson to evolve the franchise's narrative direction. The project was officially announced at Microsoft's E3 2018 briefing as the direct sequel to Gears of War 4, marking a significant shift by centering the story on Kait Diaz rather than the series' longtime protagonist Marcus Fenix.[31][32] The reveal trailer emphasized a more personal, road-trip-inspired tone, drawing comparisons to Mad Max: Fury Road to highlight themes of exploration and emotional depth.[32][33] Fergusson led the team assembly, assembling a core group focused on deepening emotional storytelling through player-driven choices and character relationships, a departure from the series' traditional action-heavy focus. Initial concepts prioritized Kait as the female lead, a decision described as natural given her established role in Gears of War 4 and her mysterious connection to the Locust Horde, allowing for a more approachable and diverse narrative. The team ideated ambitious open-world elements to expand exploration, alongside the introduction of a robot companion, Jack, designed to assist in traversal and puzzle-solving while adding humor and companionship to the squad dynamic.[34][35][36] To ground Kait's arc, the development team conducted extensive research into the broader Gears of War lore, incorporating elements from novels such as Gears of War: Ascendance—which bridges the narrative from Gears of War 4 to Gears 5 by exploring Kait's journey following her mother's death and her family heritage and ties to antagonists like Queen Myrrah. This integration ensured continuity while building on Kait's Outsider roots and personal mysteries from prior media.[37] The pre-production phase also defined the project's scope under Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, aiming for cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC, with technical targets including native 4K resolution support and 60 frames per second performance to leverage the upgraded Unreal Engine 4. Fergusson emphasized building the game from the ground up for PC compatibility to broaden accessibility.[38]Production and technology
Development of Gears 5 commenced in 2017 at The Coalition, shortly after the 2016 release of Gears of War 4, culminating in the game's launch on September 5, 2019, for early access and September 10 for standard release. The studio, with a team exceeding 200 developers based in Vancouver, Canada, oversaw the entire production process, leveraging their expertise in the Gears of War franchise to expand the series' scope.[39][37] The game was built using Unreal Engine 4, with The Coalition accessing the engine's source code to implement custom optimizations tailored to the series' demands. These enhancements enabled advanced dynamic weather systems, such as sandstorms and blizzards that interact with gameplay and visuals in real-time, supported by volumetric fog and god rays for atmospheric immersion. Destructible environments were refined through improved physics simulations, allowing for more interactive cover and debris during combat, while lighting upgrades incorporated dynamic shadows and global illumination to enhance realism without sacrificing performance, targeting 60 frames per second on Xbox One X.[40][41] Cutscenes utilized full performance capture technology, capturing actors' facial expressions, body movements, and voice lines simultaneously to achieve seamless integration and emotional depth. Laura Bailey, voicing and providing motion capture for protagonist Kait Diaz, exemplified this approach, alongside other cast members like Liam McIntyre as J.D. Fenix, ensuring authentic portrayals in a narrative emphasizing diverse characters.[30][42] The soundtrack, composed by Ramin Djawadi, blended orchestral elements with heavy rock influences, drawing from the franchise's tradition while incorporating modern electronic touches to underscore intense action sequences and emotional moments.[43] Production faced significant challenges in balancing the introduction of open-world segments—such as vast explorable areas in Acts 1 and 4—with the series' hallmark tight shooter pacing, requiring iterative design to maintain cover-based combat flow amid larger environments. Additionally, coordinating voice acting for a diverse ensemble demanded careful scheduling and direction to align performances with the evolving script. Post-release patches addressed initial launch stability issues, refining multiplayer connectivity and bug fixes.[40][44]Marketing and release

The promotion for Gears 5 commenced at Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference, where a cinematic announcement trailer introduced the sequel's narrative shift toward protagonist Kait Diaz's personal quest across a vast, open-world Sera. An accompanying gameplay trailer debuted at the same event, emphasizing cooperative play, environmental traversal on Skiffs, and dynamic combat sequences.[45] Further hype built at E3 2019, with The Coalition unveiling an extended campaign demo playable by attendees, alongside trailers announcing the September 10, 2019 release date and introducing the competitive Escape mode. A story-focused trailer at Gamescom 2019 expanded on Kait's emotional arc and the Swarm threat, reinforcing the game's themes of discovery and survival.[46][47] The game launched in multiple editions to cater to different audiences. The Standard Edition included the core campaign, multiplayer, and Horde modes. The Ultimate Edition provided four-day early access starting September 6, 2019, along with the Terminator: Dark Fate Character Pack, 30-day Boost for faster progression, and a Season Pass for future DLC content. Limited physical variants featured the Collector's Edition, exclusive to GameStop, with a remote-controlled Jack drone replica, premium collector's box, custom display stand, embroidered DBI patch, Jack schematic art print, DBI ID badge with lanyard, collector's booklet, and an exclusive steelbook, in addition to the Ultimate Edition content, while the Xbox One X Gears 5 Limited Edition bundle offered a custom 1TB console with themed design and controller.[48] Tie-in media expanded the universe pre-launch, notably the five-issue Gears of War: Hivebusters comic series from IDW Publishing, released from May to September 2019. Penned by Kurtis J. Wiebe and illustrated by Alan Quah, it chronicled the origins of the elite Scorpio squad—Lahni Talzin, Keegan P. Wittaker, and Mackenzie "Mac" Alexandre—whose stories integrated into the game's Escape mode and later Hivebusters expansion. Promotional in-game events included reveals for crossover content, such as the Batista gameplay trailer showcasing wrestler Dave Bautista as a character skin.[49] Key partnerships amplified accessibility and performance. Gears 5 launched day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, enabling subscribers to access the Ultimate Edition content from September 6, 2019, without additional purchase. The Coalition partnered with AMD to optimize the PC port for Ryzen processors and Radeon GPUs, incorporating FidelityFX for enhanced image quality and bundling three-month Xbox Game Pass for PC trials with Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards.[50][51] The campaign faced minor backlash regarding its cover art, which shifted from the gritty, Marcus Fenix-centric designs of Gears of War 4 to a brighter, Kait-focused aesthetic reflecting the sequel's exploratory tone and diverse cast, drawing criticism from some fans for deviating from series traditions.[52]Platforms and distribution
Gears 5 launched initially on September 6, 2019, with early access for the Ultimate Edition on Xbox One and Windows platforms, supporting cross-progression through Xbox Play Anywhere, which allows purchases on one platform to be playable on the other without additional cost.[24] The standard edition followed on September 10, 2019, marking the full worldwide release for these platforms.[2] This phased rollout enabled pre-order customers and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to begin playing four days ahead of the general public.[53] The game achieved a simultaneous global release, with no significant regional variations in timing, ensuring availability across North America, Europe, Asia, and other markets on the same date.[24] Digital distribution occurred primarily through the Microsoft Store for Windows and Xbox, as well as Steam, where it was available day-and-date with the other platforms.[53] Physical copies for Xbox One were offered via major retailers including GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart, providing disc-based access with included digital entitlements for enhanced editions.
