Evolutionary algorithms, inspired by natural selection and genetics, provide a population-based optimization framework for designing intelligent controllers by iteratively evolving candidate solutions to meet control objectives. These methods are particularly useful in complex, nonlinear control problems where traditional gradient-based techniques may converge to local optima. In intelligent control, evolutionary algorithms optimize controller parameters or structures by evaluating fitness based on performance metrics, such as the integral of squared error (ISE), defined as \text{ISE} = \int_0^\infty e^2(t) \, dt, where e(t) is the tracking error.[63][64] Genetic algorithms (GAs), a prominent class of evolutionary algorithms, operate through mechanisms of selection, crossover, and mutation to mimic biological evolution. In the selection phase, superior individuals from the population—representing potential controller configurations—are chosen probabilistically based on their fitness scores, favoring those that minimize control errors or maximize stability margins. Crossover combines features from two selected parents to generate offspring, promoting diversity in the search space, while mutation introduces random variations to prevent premature convergence. Seminal work by Chipperfield and Fleming demonstrated GAs' efficacy in engineering control applications, including multivariable systems, by tuning parameters to achieve robust performance.[64][65] Swarm intelligence methods, drawing from collective behaviors in nature such as bird flocking, offer another bio-inspired approach for controller optimization. Particle swarm optimization (PSO), introduced by Kennedy and Eberhart, initializes a swarm of particles in the parameter space, each representing a candidate controller solution, and updates their positions iteratively toward personal and global optima. For instance, GAs can optimize the parameters of fuzzy inference systems by evolving rule bases that improve decision-making in uncertain environments, as shown in early applications to fuzzy control design. Similarly, these algorithms adjust neural network weights in adaptive controllers, enabling online learning for dynamic processes without requiring derivative information. Multi-objective formulations extend this capability, balancing trade-offs like performance and robustness in controller design; for example, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms (NSGA-II) generate Pareto-optimal solutions for robust control under uncertainty.[67][68][69] A representative example is the use of GAs to tune PID controllers for chemical processes, such as batch reactors, where global optimization handles nonlinear dynamics and parameter interactions effectively. In one study, GA-optimized PID parameters reduced settling times and overshoot compared to Ziegler-Nichols tuning in a pH neutralization process, demonstrating improved tracking under varying operating conditions. These techniques underscore the role of evolutionary and swarm intelligence in creating scalable, robust intelligent controllers for real-world systems.[70][71]
